To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, JAMES BENGOUGH and JOHN F. GAYNoR, citizens of the United States, residing at Niagara Falls and Bridgeport, in the: counties of Niagara and Fairfield and States of New York and Connecticut, respectively, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Autographic Registers, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
Our invention relates to autographic registers. One of the objects is to provide a device in which'the webs will be so fed that the printing matter on the slips will always be in exact register with one another when they are in position Within the margin frame for receiving entries thereon. Another object is to provide improved means for withdrawing the slips after the entry has been made. Another object is to provide means for exerting a constantly decreasing pressureupon the roll of paper and at the same time maintain the web in proper alinement as it leaves the rolls. Another object is to provide a device in which portions of the webs of predetermined lengths may be withdrawn at each operation. Other objects will in part be obvious and in part pointed out hereinafter.
The invention accordingly consists in the features of construction, combinations of elements and arrangement of parts which will be exemplified in the construction hereinafter set forth, and the scope of the appli cation of which will be indicated in the following claims.
In the accompanying drawings there is shown an illustrative embodiment of the invention showing a register of the triplicator type, in which the reference numerals refer to similar parts throughout the several figures.

Referring now to the drawings, our device consists of a casing comprising side members 1, 1, within which the spindles 2 areremovably mounted -.in any suitable manner. Spools 3, upon which the paper webs 4 are rolled, are rotatably mounted upon these spindles in the usual manner and these webs are led from said rolls forward and upward and passed over the guide rolls 5, from which they are led over the writing tablet 6 in the well-known manner. The writing tablet is preferably provided with a downwardly extending offset end' portion 7, as indicated clearly in Figs. 3 and 4 for the purpose hereinafter described. Suitable carbon spools 8 are mounted within the carbon roll holders 9 which are secured to the sides of the casing in any suitable manner, one of said spools carrying a roll 8 of carbon paper, or other suitable transferring medium, and the other of said spools serving to draw said transferring medium over the tablet and wind it upon itself as the medium becomes used up. A margin frame 10 is movably secured to one of the side members in any preferred manner, and may be provided upon its other edge with a downwardly turned portion 11 provided with a notch 12 with which a suitable latch 13 engages to retain said margin frame in its normally closed position. Pivoted within the casing to one of the side members thereof and bearing against the edge of the webs, are the arms 14, each of which is provided with a pin 15 adapted to bear upon the. surface of the roll of paper with which 1t cooperates. As these arms are all of the same construction, one only will be described. A tension member 16 has one of its ends preferably secured to the side member of the casing and may be coiled about the pivot 17 upon which the arm is pivoted, and extending upward between the arm and the side member of the casing adjacent thereto, has
its free end 18 bent to engage the upper edge of the arm, as clearly shown in Fig. 3 and the action of said tension member tends to press said arm away from the side member to hold it against the edge of the web in order to prevent lateral movement thereof, and at the same time tends to press it downwardly in order to retain the pin 15 in contact with the periphery of the roll of paper. As the paper is used up during the operation of the register the roll will correspondingly decrease in diameter, and the tension member is so adjusted and arranged that as the'roll decreases the downward pressure exerted by said member will also decrease, thus counteracting the additional eflort which is required to withdraw the web from the roll of reduced diameter, ,whereby the pull required to move the web through the apparatus will be maintained constant irrespective of the size of the roll.
Secured to the under side of the writing tablet 6 are guide members 19, the inner edges of each of which are preferably offset as shown in Fig. 6 to form suitable guide. ways 20 within which the edges 21 of the slide 22 engage. This slide is preferably made of a single piece of metal curved at its outer end and having its inner ends connected by means of a cross-bar 23. Journaled within the end portions of the slide and extending longitudinally thereof is a rod 24 threaded throughout apor tion of its length as indicated at 25, and having the remaining portion preferably roughened as indicated at 26, to provide a gripping surface in order that it may be easily turned by the fingers. The outer end of said rod is preferably provided with squared portion 27 with which a square opening 28 in the free end of the spring member 29 secured to the slide engages, as shown in Fig. 1, the extreme end of said spring being preferably upturned slightly as shown at 30 to provide convenient finger-engaging means, whereby the spring may be moved to disengage the rod. A cam member 31 having lateral extensions 33 engaging the sides of the slide 22 is provided with a threaded opening 32 for engagement with the threaded portiongof the rod upon which it is movably mounted, and is further preferably provided witlra'nupturned end portion 34 for a purpose hereinafter described. Secured to the outer end of the slide upon its upper surface a plate 35 which may be provided with a finger piece 36 preferably formed integral therewith, whereby the slide may be withdrawn. The parts are so proportioned and assembled that when the slide occupies its innermost position, as shown in Fig. 3, the edge of the plate 35, which is preferably beveled, as indicated at 36, will extend over and engage with the offset portion 7 of the writing tablet C. The plate 35 is provided with upstanding lugs 37 preferably formed integral therewith, within which the spindle 38 is so cured, and'a clamp 39 is pivotally mounted upon said spindle preferably by means of the lugs 40 which may be formed integral therewith and which engage said spindle. A suitable tension member 41' preferably mounted upon the spindle 38 co-acts with the clamp and tends to keep its clamping edge in raised or inoperative position. Pivotally secured to the clamp at its rear edge is a lever 42 provided with a downwardly extending portion 43 which when the lever is in its normal position, as shown in Fig. 3, engages with the plate 35, thus raising the rear edge of the clamp 39 and forcing its clamping edge downward into operative position against the pressure exerted by the tension member 41. WVhen it is desired to release the clamping member in order to remove the slips this lever 42 is raised as shown in Fig. 4, whereby the lower edge of the downwardly-projecting portion 43 is thrown out of engagement with the plate 35, thus permitting the tension member 41 to throw'the clamp into the position shown in Fig. 4, with its clamping edge in its raised or inoperative position.
Journaled within the side walls at the' rear of the casing is a shaft 44 upon which is rigidly mounted the tearing blade 45 provided with downwardly-extending end portions 46 which are secured to the ends of said shaft. Rigidlv secured to the shaft is an arm 47 preferably bifurcated as shown and having its free end normally extending upward in the path of the cam 31 as clearly shown in Fig. 3, and a suitable tension member 48 preferably mounted upon the shaft 44 normally retains said arm in this position and also holds the tearing blade in its raised or inoperative position as shown in Fig. 3, with its tearing edge out of contact with the web.
The casing may be provided at its rear portion with upwardly extending ears 49 within which the shaft 50 is journaled, said shaft having a friction device 51 secured thereto which is normally held in operative relation with the writing tablet 6- to hold the paper strips in position by means of a suitable tension member 52. One end of the shaft 50 is'pre-ferably provided with a bent portion 53 for engagement with the fingers,
land a. notch 54 is formed in the shaft in order that when it is desired to place the paper webs in position within the register, the shaft 50 may be rotated by means of the finger piece until the notched portion of the shaft engages a coiiperating notch 54 formed in one of the end arms 46 of the tearing blade 45, whereby the friction device is held in raised or inoperative position, thus permitting the paper webs to be readily passed thereunder. After the. paper has been placed in position the shaft is thrown out of engagement with the notch in the tearing blade, thus permitting the friction device to move into operative position to hold the paper webs firmly against the writing tablet.
The operation of the device will now be described The paper webs are first threaded in the device as described above and have their free ends gripped by the clamp 39, as indicated in Fig. 3. After the entry has been made upon the slip in the usual manner, the slide is drawn out by means of the finger piece 36, the clamp, of course, drawing the web from above the writing-tablet during this movement of the slide. As the slide approaches the outer limit of its travel, which distance depends upon the position of the cam 31, the upturned portion 34 thereof will engage the arm 47 secured to the shaft 44 and upon which the tearing blade is secured, and a further movement of the slide will cause the cam to depress the arm and simultaneously depress the tearing blade until it assumes its operative position engaging with the web ad acent the offset portion 7 of the writing tablet, as shown in Fig. 4, and at this point of movement of the slide the upper portion of the cam member will engage with the under surface of said ofiset portion, thereby preventing any further outward movement of the slide. The lever 42 is now thrown into its upward position, thereby permitting the clamp to assume its inoperative position as before described, thus releasing the slips which may now be detached from the main portion of the web at the tearingedge in the usual manner. The slide is now pushed inward, thus causing the cam member to become disengaged from the arm and permitting said arm and the connected tearing blade toassume their normal positions through the agency of the tension member 48, and as the slide reaches its innermost position the beveled edge 36 of the plate 35 will pass under the free ends of the webs, which will extend between said plate and the clamping edge of the clamp.
The lever 42 is then depressed, thus throwing the clamp into its operative position and gripping the ends of the webs between it and the plate as shown in Fig. 3, whereby the apparatus is in readiness for another operation.
To provide for the use of entry slips of various lengths, the cam member 31 may be moved forward or backward as the case -may be, thereby altering the length of throw -or,.ou,tward movement of the slide. 60
-t-he rod is then grasped between the fingers thereof. If desired, the slide may, of course,
have calibration marks thereon to designate the extent to which it may be withdrawn.
As many changes could be made in the above construction, and many apparently widely different embodiments of this inven tion could be made without departing from the scope thereof, it is intended that all matter contained in the above description or shown in the accompanying drawings shall be interpreted as illustrative and not in a limiting sense.
It is also to be understood that the language used in the following claims is intended to cover all of the generic and specific features of the invention herein described and all statements of the scope of the invention which, as a matter of language, might be said to fall therebetween.
Having described our invention what we claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. In an autographic register, in combination, a writing tablet over which the webs are adapted to be drawn, said tablet being provided with an offset end portion, a movable member in juxtaposition to said tablet, means carried by said movable member to engage said oifset portion when the member is in its outermost position, whereby the outward movement thereof is limited.
2. In an autographic register, in combination, a writing tablet over which the webs are adapted to be drawn and having an ofl'- set end portion, a sliding member in juxtaposition to said tablet, means carried by said sliding member. cooperating with said offset portion when said member is in its innermost position, and means carried by said first-mentioned means to grip the webs.
3. In an autographic register, in-c0mbi nation, a writing tablet over which the webs are adapted to be drawn and having a-n ofi"--.
set end portion, guides secured to saidtabl'et a member in sliding engagement with said guides, means carried by said member' and cooperating with said ofi'set portion when said member is in its innermost position, and a clamp carried by said means and adapted to grip the strip of paper between it and said means. 4. In an autographic register, in combination, a casing, a writing tablet, a tearing blade supported by said casing and cooperating with said tablet, said tearing blade being normally held in inoperative position, a sliding member cooperating with said tablet and adapted to be connected to a web, and means carried by said member to move said tearing blade into operative position as said member is moved outward.
5. In an autographic register, in combination, a casing, a writing tablet, means for drawing a web thereover, an oscillating tearing blade mounted upon said casing and adapted to cooperate with said tablet to hold the web, said blade being normally held in inoperative-position an arm operatively connected with said blade, and a cam operatively associated with said first mentioned means adapted to cooperate with said arm to move said'blade 'into operative position as the web is drawn over said tablet.
6. In an autographic register, in combination, a casing, a writing tablet, an oscillating tearing blade mounted upon said casing and cooperating with said tablet, said blade being normally held in inoperative position, an arm operatively connected with.
said blade, a sliding member in juxtaposition to said tablet and movable with respect thereto, and adjustable means carried bysaid sliding member and adapted to cooperate with said arm to move said blade into operative position.
7. In an autographic register, in combination, a casing, a writing tablet, an oscillating tearing blade mounted upon said casing and cooperating with said'tablet, said blade being normallyheld in inoperative position, an arm operatively connected with said blades, a sliding member in juxtaposition to said tablet and movable with respect thereto, a threaded rod journaled to said sliding member, and movable means mounted upon said rod and coacting with the threaded portion thereof to move said blade,
into operative position.
8. In an autographic register, in combination, a casing, a writing tablet, means for drawing a web thereover, a shaft supported within said casing, a tearing blade mounted upon said shaft and adapted to cooperate with said writing tablet to hold the web, said blade being normally held in inoperative position, an arm secured to said shaft, and means operatively associated with said first-mentioned means and cooperating with said arm to cause -said blade to move into operative position as the web is drawn over said tablet.
9. In an autographic register, in combination, a casing, a spindle mounted therein adapted to hold a roll of paper, a support for the paper when being written upon connected with said casing, and means adjacent said spindle adapted to engage the edge and the periphery of said roll.
10. In an autographic register, in combiaasae'ss nation, a casing, a spindle mounted therein adapted to hold a roll of paper, a table across which the paper is drawn from said roll for supporting the paper when being written upon, and means adjacent said spindle adapted to yieldingly engage the edge and the periphery of said roll.
11. In an autographic register, in combi-- nation, a casing, a'spindle mounted therein adapted to hold a roll of paper, a support for the paper when being written upon con- 12. In an autographic register, in combination, a casing havlng' an opening therein, a, spindle'mounted within said casing and carrying a roll of paper, the paper passing through the openmg and being disposed on the upper surface of the casing in position to receive inscriptions, an arm pivoted to the casing adjacent the spindle, and tension means pressing the arm toward the spindle with a constantly decreasing pressure and simultaneously pressing the arm to engage the side of the roll whereby lateral movement of the paper is prevented.
13. In an autographic register, in combination, a casing, a spindle mounted therein adapted to receive a roll of paper, a table across which the paper is drawn from said roll for supporting the paper when being written upon, an arm pivoted to said casing adjacent said spindle, and tension means adapted to move said arm in a direction substantially parallel to the axis of said spindle and simultaneously move said arm toward said spindle with a constantly decreasing pressure.
14. In an autographic register, in combination, a writing tablet over which the webs are adapted to be drawn, a friction device cooperating therewith and normally held in op erative relation thereto whereby the webs will be firmly held between said tablet and said friction device, and means to hold said friction device in inoperative position.
15. In an autographic register, in combination, a writing tablet over which the webs are adapted to be drawn, a tearing blade cooperating therewith, a friction device cooperating with said tablet and normally held in operative position, whereby the webs will be firmly held between said tablet and said friction device, said friction device being provided with means coacting with said tearing blade to hold said friction device in inoperative position.
16. In an autographic register, in combination, a writing tablet over which the webs are adapted to be drawn, a tearing blade cooperating therewith and provided-with a.
notch, a friction device cooperating with said messes tablet and normally held in operative osition therewith whereby the webs wil be firmly held between said tablet and said frictiolf device, said friction device comprising means adapted to engage said notch to retain the friction device in inoperative position With respect to said tablet.
17. In an autographic register, in combi nation, a writing tablet over which the webs are adapted to be drawn, web-drawing means, a tearing blade operatively associated with said tablet and normally held in inoperative position, a sliding member cooperating with said tablet, and adjustable means carried by said member to move said tearing blade intqoperative position as said member is moved outward.
18. In an autographic register, in combination, a writing tablet over which the webs are adapted to be drawn, said tablet being provided with a projection, web-drawing means, a tearing blade operatively associated with said tablet and normally held in inoperative position, an arm operatively connected to said tearing blade, and means associated with said web-drawing means adapted simultaneously to engage said am and said projection to cause said tearing blade to assume its operative position against the webs and to limit the outward movement of said web-drawing means.
19. In an autographic register, in combination, a. writing tablet over which the webs are adapted to be drawn and having an ofiset end portion, a movable member in juxtaposition to said ,tablet, means carried by said movable member cooperating with said ofl'set portion when said member is in its innermost position, and means carried by said first-mentioned means to grip the webs.
20. In an autographic reglster, in combination, a casing, a writing tablet, a tearing blade supported by said casing and cooperting with said tablet, a sliding member cooperating with said tablet and adapted to be connected to a web and means carried by said member to move said tearing blade.
