ROBERT F. PIKE, oriFALL RIVER, ivmssnoHUsErtrs.`
" Aerniaiviinvr-SUPPO'RTER.
To all 'whom't may concern.-
Be it known that I, ROBERT FFPIKE, a
i vcitizen of the United States, residing 1 at Fall River, in the county of Bristol and State of Massachusetts, have inventednew and useful Improvements inGarment-Supporters, of which the following is a specification. Y
The present invention relates generally to a garment-engaging device comprising a plate anda 'fabric-engaging'button secured thereto, and more particularly to garment supporters of the general nature of those commonly used for supporting stockings, and of the type in which a plate or tab is provided with a stud or button which is adapted to enter a loop, the fabric of the stocking or other garment supported thereby being placed over the button and passed with it through the loop, and gripped between the sides of the loop and the sides of the button. The feature in which my present invention particularly consists is the construction of such a button, or equivalent element, and the plate which carries it whereby said parts are adapted to be quickly and conveniently assembled and securely connected.
The precise nature of the invention and the manner in which I prefer to carry the same into effect are described in detail in the following specication in connection with the drawings.
Figure 1 is an edge view of an assembled plate and button embodying my invention.
Fig. 2 is a side view of the same looking toward the inner or under side.
Fig. 3 is a section on line 3-3 of Fig. 2.
Fig. 4 is a section on line 4-4 of Fig. 2.
Fig. 5 is a perspective view of the button.
Fig. 6 is a side view of the plate.
Fig. 7 is a section on line 7-7 of Fig. 6.
Fig. 8 is a view similar to Fig. 7, showing the tongues hereinafter described, bent from their normal position, to permit the assemblage of the plate and button.
The same reference characters indicate thesame parts in all the figures.
In Fig. 1, a represents a plate or tab and b a loop. Said plate and loop are connected to the webbing c of a garter or other supporter in such a way as to be substantially'hinged together in a well known manner. d is a button or stud carried by the plate a, and is adapted to be passed through the loop b and to be slipped into the narrow Specication of Letters Patent. Yapplicati@ inea Maren :2, 1917. serial No. 151,872.

or reduced end portion of the usual opening Vin such loop, the sides of such narrow portion then gripping' the interposed fabric of the stocking or-other garment against thel button d.
Iformthe plate or tab a' of metal which is relativelyv non-resilient, although some-V what flexible, sothat the tongue or tongues hereinafter described maybe bent relatively to the plate and remain in any position lcaused by bending. Thebutton d i'sformed Vwholly or in part of compressible elastic material such as so-called rubber, of a composition substantially such as has already been long used for garment supporters, the rubber composition being vulcanized, and the button d united firmly to the plate a by the means next described.
The plate a has a hole g through which the base portion of the button is passed, and slits h, h to receive the webbing c. The loop b of wire or equivalent material and construction is hinged to a loop 0 of the webbing. The head of the button Z may be small enough to pass freely through the hole g of the plate a, the elasticity of the button permitting the head to be compressed while passing through the hole and to subsequently expand. The shank of the button is formed so as to fill the hole g and is provided with an enlarged inner end portion formed by oppositely projecting ears al adapted to bear on the under or inner side of the plate, as shown by Fig. 3. The plate is formed with integral tongues a normally projecting into the hole g, said tongues being relatively inelastic and flexible so that they may be bent outwardly and inwardly and remain in any positions to which they may be bent.
The inner end of the shank of the button l is provided between the ears d with a socket d2. Before assembling the parts the tongues a are bent out of the hole g, as shown by Fig. 8. The base of the button is then inserted in the hole g and the ears d are held against the inner side of the plate. The tongues a are next bent back to their normal position and enter the socket d2.
The button and plate are now securely connected, the ears d preventing endwise movement of the button in one direction, while the tongues a prevent endwise movement of the button in the opposite direction, and also prevent the button from turning.
The hole g and the base of the button may a instead of two, 4or Withv-more than twov tongues, the base of the button being correspondingly socketed.
I claim:-
v l. A idevice ott-the 4character stated, "com prising a metal base plate having a hole and a flexible inelastic tongue, and a button composed of a head and shank yformed -to enter said hole, and having an enlarged inner end portion adapted to engage the inner side ofl the plate, and .preventendwise movement of the 1button in one ,'direction, the said tongue being adapted to Vbe bent o utwardlyto permit the insertion of the button in the hole, and inwardly yto engage theiinner end portion of ythe yinserted shank Gopies of this .patentmay be obtained for live cents each, `by `Wahngtn I). inthe opposite direction.
Q .A device ofthecharacter stated, comprising a metal base plate having a hole 'and iaflexible inelastic tongue adapted to be bent outwardly and inwardly relatively to Ithe "pl'ate'and a button composedof "ai-head and -aI shank formed to enter the hole and provided with "p'positely projecting ears forming a shank enlargement adapted to engage the inner side of the plate, said shank'being .provided also with a socket `between 4said ears arranged Ato receive the'said tongue when the latter is bent inwardly. Y
In testimony whereof Im have aliiked 'my ROBERT F. PIKE.
