To all whom it may concern.

Be it known that I, FRED H. L. JUHL, a citizen of the United States, residing at Stuttgart, in the county of Arkansas and State of Arkansas, have invented new and useful Improvements in Scissors Attachments, of which the following is a specification.

The present invention relates to attachments for scissors and shears and similar articles and has for its object to provide a simple and convenient means of attaching an implement of the class described to the clothing of the user, or to any convenient support, so that it will be readily accessible and convenient for use.

The attachment consists of a penetrating point or prong so secured to the scissors that it can be quickly and conveniently caught on the coat of the user or any other penetrable support, this attachment being preferably secured to the pivot Pin of the shears (although it is obvious that it might be otherwise secured) and in its preferred form it constitutes a tensioning spring which will maintain the blades of the cutting implement always in proper shearing relation.

In order that the invention may be understood by those skilled in the art, I have shown its preferred embodiment in the accompanying drawings, but it is obvious that mechanical changes may be made without departing from the spirit of the invention, and this disclosure being merely illustrative is not to be regarded as restrictive of my invention so far as variation of its mechanical details is concerned.

Referring to the drawings by numerals, like numbers indicating like parts in the several views, my attachment is applied to an ordinary pair of scissors and consists of a bow spring 13 having a pivot-pin opening in .its arch through which the pivot bolt 11 of the scissors passes, this pivot 11 having preferably a nut threaded thereon which may be Specification of Letters Patent.

turned more or less to compress the bow spring and so provide for adjustment of the blades relative to each other.

The ends 8 and 9 of said bow spring con tact with the outer face of the adjacent scis-' sor blade 7, and one end has its tip formed into an upbent lip 6 while the other end has its tip also upbent at 5 and continued in a sharpened penetrating prong or extension 14 which is offset from the blade so that it may be readily thrust into the coat of the user, or any other support within easy reach.

In order to insure the bow-spring 13 with its prong 14 being maintained always in alinement with the blade, I provide the spring 13 preferably at the bend 5 between it and the prong 14 with a locking rib or projection 15 lying longitudinally of the spring and adapted to engage a recess 16 cut in the blade so that displacement of the bow spring from its normal longitudinal alinement with the blade will be prevented. The recess 16 is of such length that the rib or projection 15 can play back and forth as the bow-spring 13 is compressed or released, so that shifting of the spring will not throw the rib out of engagement with its recess, and the penetrating prong will be maintained always in a predetermined position.

In my invention the pointed tip or penetrating prong is useful as described when the scissors are supported with their points upward; but it is quite possible to turn the points downward, insert the scissors in the pocket, and push the lip 6 over the edge of the pocket if the user should prefer. Therefore it will be seen that the ends of the spring serve as supports for its arch, and their tips serve electively as means for supporting the scissors on the person of the user.

It will be observed that, as disclosed, the penetrating prong is turnedtoward the handles of the scissors, and this rrrangement is preferable for the obvious reason that in using the scissors or shears with the attachment there is no danger of this prong becoming entangled with the material being cut, as would be the case if it were turned toward the points of the scissors.

What I claim is:

The combination with a pair of scissors having an elongated pivot bolt and a recess in the outer face of one blade adjacent to and elongated in line with its bolt-opening; of a bow spring Whose arch is mounted on said bolt beneath its head, one end of the spring bearing on said blade and having an npbent lip, and the other end also bearing on the blade and havin a projection engaging and shorter than said recess, and upbent beyond the projection and continued into a penetrating prong offset from the face of the Copies of this patent may be obtained for five cents each, by addressing the Commissioner of Patentg blade and standing substantially parallel 10 with its length, for the purpose set forth.
