WINEIRED MUDGE BROOKS, OF EAST ORANGE, NEW JERSEY, ASSIGNOL TO E.' J. BROOKS & CO., 0F NEW YORK, N. Y., A CORPORATION OF NEW YORK.
BOX-STRAP SEAL.
Specification of Letters Patent. v Patented Jan. 1, 1.918;
Application led October 15, 1917. Serial No. 196,652.
To all whom z't may concern:
. Be it known that I, WINFRED MUDGE BROOKS, a citizen of the United States of America, and a resident of East Orange, in
vthe State of New Jersey, (whose post-office address is #93 Arlington` avenue, East Orange, N. J.,) have invented certain new and useful Improvements in BoX-Strap Seals, of which the following is a specication.
This invention relates to that class of protective seals and guides7 which used with that the accidental breakage of the box strap at any pointwould not affect the. strap at other points beyond the adjacent seals. Other objects will be indicated in connection with the detailed description of the invention.
One sheet of drawings accompanies this specification as part thereof, in which like reference characters denote like parts in all of the figures.
Figure l represents a packing case secured by two box straps and a plurality of the seals described herein; Fig. 2 is a top view of an improved seal'engaged with the two ends of a box strap preliminary to sealing; Fig. 3 is an end view of the seal without the box strap; Fig. 4 is a cross section view taken on the line M, M, of Fig. 2; Fig. 5 is a view similar to Fig. 4 after sealing.
The improved seal 1s constructed of one lpiece of non-resilient sheet metal and has a flat base a, in which is cut two parallel slots h, IL. Nail holes c, c, are cut in the base part a adjacent to each of the slots h, 7L, and the part l between the two slots is raised in a plane above, but parallel with that of the base. A small hole e is punched downward near the center of the raised partd producing a slight downwardly projecting bur z'.
In operation one of the improved seals is secured to each plank of the box to be Copies of this patent may be obtained for sealed by nails passing through the nail holes c. A boX strap b is then passedy over the nail heads, through the slot a, and under the top part rl of each seal, both ends being drawn through one seal at their junction.
Each seal is then sealed by punching downwardly through the central hole c lwith a suitable punch adapted to enlarge said i hole, depress said raised part 'cl into close) contact `with the strap or strap ends beneath,
and perforate the boX strap or strap ends beneath the central hole o producing downwardly projecting burs z" on said strap or strap ends in close interlocking engagement with the enlarged bur i on the top part Z as indicated in Fig. 5.
The box strap by this sealing operation is brought into a close interlocked relation withy the seal part and the nails securing the seal part to the plank are concealed and protected by the box strap.
I claim: y
An improved guide-seal for box straps, constructed of one piece sheet metal and having in combination, a flat base part, two parallel slotsy cut in said base, nail holes in said base adjacent to said slots, a flat raised part between said slots, said raised part be- Having thus fully described my invention, y
ing above but in a plane parallel with said base and having a central hole punched therein with downwardlyprojecting burs, said guide seal being adapted to be secured by nails through said nail holes in its base to a plank of afbox, to have'a metal box strap, or strap ends, passed over the heads of such nails, through said slots and under said raised part and then to be sealed and permanently interlocked with said boX strap. or strap'ends, by having said raised part with its downwardly projecting bur stamped down upon said strap, or strap ends, while a punch driven through said central hole is further driven through the strap, or strap ends, producing closelyy interlocked'burs, all substantially as hereinbefore specified.
