To all'w'hom it may concern Be it known that I, CHARLES L. RE znN- STEIN, a citizen of the United States, and resident of Pittsburgh, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and'us ef'ul Improvement in Methods of Decorating Glassware; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description thereof.

My invention relates to an improved method'of ornamenting glassware. In general the invention comprises forming an ornamental background applied to the rear or underside or inside of the glass vessel covering a certain field, and opposite this backgroundor field on the outer face of the vessel applying an ornamental design comprising portions of colored glass which cover portions of the field, while the remainder of the, field shows through to the background, whereas the other portions of the field are partially or entirely covered by ornamentationon' the face.

In the embodiment of my invention here selected for illustration, and referring to the drawings, Figure 1 is a fragmentary section of a glass dish which is to be treated in accordance With the method embodying the invention; Fig. 2 is a fragmentary view showing the design partly completed; Fig. 3 is a likeview showing a further development of the design; Fig. 4 is a further view showing a still further development; Fig. 5 is a like view of the complete design; Figs. 6 and 7 are views of other embodiments of the invention; and Fig. 8 is a detached ornamented portion made according to the invention.

In carrying out the invention, the face 1 of the border or rim of the glass vessel is colored or etched in any desired manner to produce a scroll or other design 2. The etching of the face however, is omitted in the areas 3 around the border. The underside of therim, as at 4, is then treated with suitable coloring matter to form a solid background throughout the portion of the glass vessel which is to be ornamented. This colored background has two functions. First, it forms a background or field for the colored glass areas 3- and the glass in these areas gives this background coloring a glazed or glossy appearance. Furthermore, the solid colored background forms a basis or backing for enriching the coloring matter, which is applied to the raised ornamented part or border. -,For example, the

After applying the coloring matter to the rear face of the border to form the background in the areas 3, and after applying the coloring matter to the areas 5 over theetched pattern, the coloring matter of these areas may be baked to set them permanently on:-

The areas 6 so treated maybe then 001- ored in imitation of flowers and foliage, etc, and the vessel again subjected to a suitable baking process to set thisvariegated coloring of the flowers and foliage.

l/Vhile I have shown my method of ornamenting glassware applied simply to a border of a glass vessel, it is to be understood that the same method may be employed in ornamenting any other portion of the vessel, such for example, as the center of a dish, or entire border and center. For ex ample in Fig. 6 I have shown a plate with a simple border illustration applied on the rear or bottom side 10 and defining outlines 11 applied on the outer side. In Fig. 7 I have illustrated a jug having the coloring field 12 on the rear or inner side and the ornamentation 13 applied on the outer face.

In Fig. 8 I have shown a detached ornamentation having the colored portion 14 applied on the rear face and the ornamentation 15 applied so as to leave exposed through the glass a portion of the rear coloring 14.

It is to be understood, however, that the, invention contemplates a method of ornamenting the glass which will present an ornamental colored background for certain or all areas of the glass, and as a further development and in combination with such soiigioftheappended claims; I
