WITNESSES INVENTOR PATENT QFFIOE.
ROBERT S. WILLIAMS, OF NORRISTOWN, PENNSYLVANIA.
IMPROVEMENT lN EARTH-CLOSETS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 125,156, dated April 2, 1872.
Specification describing certain Improvements in Earth-Closets, invented by ROBERT S. WILLIAMS, of Norristown, in the county of Montgomery and State of Pennsylvania.
My invention consists of the following particulars: The lid of the closet has openings for the passage of the earth from the reservoir on'the top of the lid that are provided with double valves, one on each side of the lid, and connected with the same center-pin, the valves being operated by means of their jointed connection with the seat of the closet, in such a manner that the opening and closing of the lid automatically opens and closes the valves, whereby a regular supply of earth is kept up, as hereinafter described. The seat opening is varied in length by a slide in accommodation to adults and children.
Figure l is an isometrical view of the improved closet. Figs. 2 and 3 are a top and edge views of the double valves E and E. Figs. 4 and 5 are like views of the foot-rest M. Fig. 6, Sheet No. 2, is avertical section of the closet through the middle from front to back, with the lid B closed. Fig. 7, Sheet No. 3, is a horizontal section through the earth-receptacle C. Fig. 8 is a top view of the closet with the boot-jack N removed from the chamber L, and the foot-rest M in positionon the seat I, the lid B being also removed.
Like letters in all the figures indicate the same parts.
A is the body of the closet. B is the lid with which is connected the earth-receptacle 0, provided with a door, D. The lid has openings a a which are covered on the upper side by the valve E, and on the lower side by the valve E, which are shown in detail in Figs. 2
and 3. The two valves are permanently connected with the center-pin F, which turns freely in the lid B. The lower valve E has an arm, I), which is connected to one end of the rod G by means of the projecting pin 0 of the arm and the slot at of the rod. The other end of the connecting-rod G has a joint connection by means of the staple H with the seat I. The openings 0 e of the valve E are at right angles to the openings ee of the valve IE, so that when the openings or a are uncovered by the partial turning of the upper valve by the raising of the lid to receive their charge of earth, they are closed on the lower side to prevent the passage of the same by the closing of the valve E and vice versa. The slot d in the connecting-rod G causes a dead rest to the valves until the lid is brought nearly down, and in the lifting of the lid until the latter is brought on such an angle as to prevent the filling of the openings a a in the up ward movement. Thevalves are turned partly around by the opening of the lid B, by means of its joint connection with the seat I, as above described, so as to let the earth into the openings a a, and cover their under side, as seen in Fig. 1. A reverse movement is given to the valves when the lid is closed, as seen in Fig. 2, whereby the openings at a are closed at top and opened at the under side of the lid so as to pass the earth which they contain into the chamber. The under side of the lid B has a groove,f, as seen in Fig. 1, to receivethe connecting-rod G, when the lid is in its closed position. The seat openingJ is expanded and contracted in adaptation to adults and children by means of the slide K, which forms part of the seat, as seen in Figs. 1 and 2. The seat I has chambers L and L, the former to contain waste paper, and the latter the footrest M, and boot-jack N. The rest has a connection with the chamber L by means of the jointed wire 0 and cross-wire P, as seen in Fig. 8, so as to admit of its being brought on top of the seat to receive the foot, or folded down into the chamber out of the way when not in use.
-I claim as my invention- 1. The combination of the double valves E and E, having a center-pin, F, and the connecting-rod G with the opening a of the lid B, and the seat I, for an automatic charging of the earth, as above set forth.
2. The slide K, in combination with the seat opening J, for the expansion and contraction of the openings, as above described.
' ROBERT S. WILLIAMS.
