AUTOMATIC MUSICAL INSTRUMENT.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I. JOHN C. DEHLS, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Automatic Musical Instruments, of which the following is a specification.
The invention pertains more particularly to a novel construction and arrangement of parts linking the foot pedals to the main bellows or pumps constituting the wind inducing devices of the instrument, and the object of my invention is to provide connections between the pumps and pedals enabling the compact folding of the'links and pedals entirely into the front of the casing or frame of the instrument and against the front walls of .the bellows. A further object of the invention is to provide a construction which may also be conveniently unfolded from the casin of the instrument whereby the pedals may be placed in operative position, and a further purpose of the invention is to provide folding mechanism linking the pedals to the pumps which shall be of great durability and efficiency.
The invention will be fully understood from the detailed description hereinafter presented, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in which:
Figure 1 is a front elevation of a portion of the mechanism of an automatic musical instrument embracing my invention, the pedals being shown in their outer operative position ready for use;
Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the same taken from the right hand side of Fig. 1, with a portion of the casing of the piano shown in vertical section, and
Fig. 3 is a view corresponding with Fig. 2 but illustrating the pedals and their link connections as having been folded inwardly within the casing of .the instrument and against the main pumps or bellows.
In the drawings, 10 designates a portion of the casing of the instrument, 11 the usual front opening therein for the pedal actions, 12 the main pumps or bellows constituting the wind inducing devices, 13 the customary equalizer in communication with said bellows and l t-the pedals by which the bellows 12 are operated.
The pedals 11 are at their outer'ends 'pivoted upon "a rod 15 which, at its ends, ex-
tends mto and' therby con-nects'the legs 16 which afford a support for the pedals when in their outer operative position. Each pedal 14 at its upper portion has. pivoted thereto a link 17 which, in the operative position of the parts, extends downwardly and inwardly, as shown in Fig. 2, and at its lower end is pivotally connected with a rearwardly extending link 18 whose inner or rear end is pivotally secured to a bracket 19 fastened to the rear or movable side of the bellows 12. The pivot 20 which connects the adjoining ends of the links 17 18 also serves as a pivot for the lower end of an upwardly extending bar 21 whose upper end projects forwardly at an angle to the body of the bar, as at 22, and is pivotally connected by a rivet or the like 23 with the forward end of an arm 25, whose rear end is pivotally connected with a bracket 26 which is rigidly secured to the front mem: ber of the bellows 12. Adjacent to'the outer edge of each pedal is provided a bent rod 27 whose front end, in the operative position of the parts, isrigidly connected with the leg 16 and thence extends upwardly and inwardly within the chamber of the .casing 10 and is pivotally connected with a bracket arm 28 and also with an upwardly extending bar 29, whose upper end is pivotally connected with an arm 30 pivotally secured at its inner end .to the aforesaid rigid bracket. 26. The rod 27 extends upwardly from the pivot 31 connecting it with the bracket arm 28 and thereby is formed a short crank arm 32 whose upper end is the part of the rod 27 which is pivotally secured to the lower end of the bar 29, the pivot connecting the rod 27 with the bar 29 being indicated at 33. The bracket arm 28 is rigidly secured to the front of the bellows 12.
The two positions of the mechanism constituting my invention are clearly illustrated in the drawings, and when the mechanism is in its outer or operative position shown in Figs. 1 and 2, the pedals 14 may be operated in the customary manner for actuating the movable side of the bellows 12, The depression of the upper portionof'the foot treadles acts through the links 17, 18 against the bellows, and during the operation of the foot treadles, the position and action thereof is rendered secure by the rod 27 and bar .29. One of the more important features of my invention is to combine suitable operating 5 for; the pedals -with other means whereby the pedals and their links'and legs may be folded within the chamber of the piano casing so as to be out of the way, as indicated in Fig. WVhen the piano is not to be used, the pedals 14; will be turned upwardly within the casing 10, the links 17 18 during such action closing toward each other and moving downwardly and the pedals themselves taking a position against the front wall of the bellows 12. The movement of the pedals to their concealed position is under proper control through the rods 27, bars 29 and bars 21, said bars being permitted to lower by means of the pivoted arms 25, 30 to accommodate the new situation for the pedals and their connected links and rods. The brackets 28 afford fixed points on which the rods 27 have their pivotal movement, and the rods 27 when turned upwardly act through their short arms 32 to draw the bars 29 and links 30 downwardly. The downward folding of the links 17, 18 acts on the bars 21 to draw them and the links downwardly, all as indicated in Fig. 3.
If only one pedal and one bellows should be employed, the two legs 16 will be made use of and preferaby also the two sets of pedal-links, vertical bars and brace rods 27. \V hen two pedals are connected at their forward ends, as shown, the two sets of links, bars and rods serve for both pedals. The
- arms or links 25, are connected together (til by a wrist pin within the bracket 26, and hence said arms or links have corresponding pivotal movement.
The mechanism hereinbefore described permits the efficient inward folding of the pedals and their mechanisms within the front of a piano casing having a limited lower front opening and to accomplish this result in a proper manner is one of the purposes attainedloy the present invention.
, hat I claim as my invention and desire to secure by Letters-Patent, is:
1. A musical instrument having a casing provided with a lower open front portion and containing wind inducing bellows, in combination, pedals carrying outer supporting legs, links pivoted together and pivotally connected with said pedals and the movable members of the bellows, vertical bars pivotallv connected at their lower ends with said links and at their upper ends by links to the front of the bellows, rods connected with said legs and pivotally secured to rigid brackets within said casing, and vertical bars pivotally connected at their lower ends with said rods and at their upper ends by links to the front of the bellows.
2. A musical instrument having a casing provided with a lower open front portion and containing wind inducing bellows, in combination, pedals carrying outer supporting legs, links pivoted together and pivotally connected with said pedals and the movable members of the bellows, vertical bars pivotally connected at their lower ends with said links and at their upper ends by links to the front of the bellows, rods connected with said legs and pivotally secured to rigid brackets within said casing, and vertical bars pivotally connected at their lower ends with said rods and at their upper ends by links to the front of the bellows, said legs and pedals being pivotally connected together and said rods at their forward ends being rigid with said legs and at their rear ends having crank arm extensions to which the bars connected with said rods are pivoted.
3. A musical instrument having a casing provided with a lower open front portion and containing wind-inducing bellows, in combination, a foot-pedal, supporting legs connected to the outer end thereof, a bracerod connected at one end with one of said legs, a bracket within said casing to which the other end of said rod is pivotally secured, pedal-links pivoted together and pivotally connected with said pedal and the movable member of said bellows, vertical bars respectively pivoted to said links and rod, a rigid support and links pivotallv connecting the upper ends of said vertical bars to said rigid support.
4. A musical instrument having a casing provided with a lower open front portion and containing wind-inducing bellows. in combination, a foot-pedal, supporting legs connected to the outer end thereof, a bracerod connected at one end with one of said legs, a bracket within said casing to which the other end of said rod is pivotally secured, pedal-links pivoted together and pivotally connected with said pedal and the movable member of said bellows, vertical bars respectively pivoted to said links and rod, a rigid support, and links pivotally connecting the upper ends of said vertical bars to said support, said rod having a crankarm extension to which its said bar is pivoted, and the said bar connected with the pedal links having at its upper end a forward extension at whose forward end the link connecting it with the rigid support is secured.
5. A musical instrument having a casing provided with a lower open front portion and containing wind-inducing bellows, in combination, a foot-pedal, supporting legs pivoted to the outer end thereof, corresponding brace-rods (27) rigidly connected at one end with said legs, rigid brackets within said casing to which the other end of said rods are pivotally secured, pedal-links pivoted together and pivotally connected with said pedal and the movable member of said bellows, vertical bars respectively pivoted at their lower ends to said links and rods, a
