To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, RAY DAvIs, a citizen of the United States, residing at Lehigh, in the county of lVebster and State of Iowa, have invented new and useful Improvements in Nut or Bolt Holding Devices, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to means for enga ing the head of a bolt or nut to permit of the operation of a suitable construction such as a wrench to disconnect the bolt or nut.
The device is adapted for use upon the crank and transmission cases of automobiles which are constructed in two sections, the meeting edges of which are flanged, the securing bolts and the nuts therefor passing through openings in the said flanges. The arrangement of the nuts and bolts is such that two wrenches are employed for removing the nuts from or screwing the same upon the bolts, and therefore the necessity of the employmentpf both of the hands of a machinist, or the necessity of employing two machinists, one operating one of the wrenches and the other holding the other wrench to prevent the turning of the bolt while the nut is being operated upon is necessitated. In the United States Patent No. 1,213,756 granted me on Jan. 23, 1917 I have produced an instrument which will automatically engage with the head of one of the holding members while the operator employs a wrench for actuating the other holder member, either the nut or the bolt, the said device including a socket member to receive the nut or the bolt and a clamping member to hold the said nut or bolt in the socket. I have discovered that this structure is, to a certain extent, defective, for the reason that when the wrench is applied to turn one of the elements of the holding or securing members, the wrench when turning the other gripping or holding member either the nut or the bolt will cause the implement to turn upon the nut or bolt and to contact with one of the sides of the automobile case. If the implement is not properly positioned, the force of contact will have a tendency to break or loosen the pivotal connection of the gripping member with the socket and to bring the said gripping member out of proper alinement with the slot in the socket member through which the gripping member passes and it may, therefore, be considered the primary object of the present invention to produce a nut wrench of this character which may be readily placed upon a nut or bolt toengage therewith and which is provided with means whereby ,to contact with the casing of the automobile or the like to present a pivotedgrippmg member associated with the instrument when being brought likewise into such contact with the case, so that danger of in-.

In-the drawing the numeral 1 designates a crank and transmission case of an automobile constructed in sections having meeting view of the imedges which are flanged outwardly and said flanges being provided with openings through which pass the connecting or securing bolts and the nuts therefor, and in Fig. 1 of the drawing the improvement is illustrated in engaging position with one of the nuts, while a spanner wrench is shown engaging the head of one of the bolts whereby to turn the bolt to release the same from the nut.
The improvement is substantially similar to that illustrated in my said Patent No. 1,213,756, but in order to comprehensively set forth the advantages of the improvement over the said patent it will be necessary for me to briefly refer to the construction as set forth in my said patent.
The implement or tool includes a socket member 2 having a handle member 3, and the bore of the socket is of a size to snugly receive the nut. The socket is provided with a longitudinal slot or opening entering from the outer end thereof, and the said socket to the opposite sides of the opening and upon the lower portion of the said socket or that portion adjacent its connection with the handle 3 is formed with outturned ears 4 through which is passed a pivot 5 that secures the jaw 6 of the gripping member 7 to the socket. The gripping member includes a handle 8 and interposed between the said handle 8 and the handle 3 is a helical spring 9 which normally forces the operating edge or face 10 of the gripping member to within the bore of the socket 2.
The operating face 10 is substantially V- shaped, and the numeral 11 designates a stop member which is arranged upon the member 6 and designed to contact with the socket to limit the inward movement of the jaw with respect to the bore of the socket.

These lug members 12-12 are so positioned that one of the same will contact with the side or face of the crank case regardless of the Position upon which the improvement is arranged upon the nut and the said lugs 12 are designed to protect the gripping member from contact with the wall of the case and thus inflict injury thereon.
