Specification of Letters Patent.
.Applicationhled Jul 9, 1917'." Serial No. was-oi.
in the parish of Corio, county of Grant, State of Victoria, Commonwealth of Australia, and whose post-office address'isAQ Villamanta street, in the said city of Greelong, have invented a new and useful Improved Hand Appliance for Detaching Mud or other Adhesions from Footwear or Like Articles, of which the following is a specification.
This inventionrelates to the removalof mud or other objectionablematerial from boots, shoes and like articles and has for its object to provide a cheap, simple and eifective device by which the mud or dirt may be expeditiously removed without damage to the footwear or like article.
The invention has been designed to remove such adhesions in an effective and speedy manner without injury to the footwear or like article. Previously a knife has generally been employed for scraping soiled footwear. In such cases the blade is liable to injure the leather or cut the stitches, particularly if the point is inserted to remove foreign material from between the sole and the upper.
The object of this invention is to provide a comparatively light strong durable and convenient scraper to remove dirt, clay or other tenacious material from footwear or the like without soiling or injuring the hands of the operator. By the invention adhesions may be removed from boots, shoes or like articles in a convenient and expeditious manner without the possibility of injury to the leather or the stitches. The scraper is capable of removing adhesions from heels of any size or shape, the hollow around the back of the heel can be cleansed and from the waist and sole of a boot or shoe by slightly altering the angle at which the scraper is applied, or using either of the two devices furnished.
In addition to its usefulness as a scraper to the soldier, the sportsman or other user of footwear, it may be employed for the purpose of lifting a lid or cover from tins or like containers, such as those in which dressings for footwear are usually put up.

for convenience of illustration.
. Fig- 5 showsa'portion of-a blank which; -is so out along the dotted lines as to form two modified scrapers.
Fig. 6 shows a modified scraper formed from one of the blanks shown in Fig. 5.
The invention may in whole or part be fabricated from 0E cuts or other scraps or pieces of material and is so designed that it may be readily hung upon a nail or other support.
The invention may be cut from a blank as seen in Fig. 1 in such a manner that one or more strips of metal are produced as indicated by the dotted line. Each of these has a body or handle portion 3, a rounded point 5 and a broad scraping edge 6. Through each strip two or more rivet holes 7 may be formed.
The material leading to the rounded point 5 is preceded by a curved tapered portion 8. This is also twisted, the upper edge being back set and the lower edge 9 is set forwardly. The lower or scraping edge 9 may be of the bevel section shown at 10 in Fig. 3.
The material leading to the broad scraping edge 6 is bowed as at 11 also seen in Figs. 2 and 4. This broad scraping edge is also beveled as at 20 in Fig. 3. The scraping edges 6 and 9 are of such a character that they do not abrade or scratch or otherwise injure the article to be scraped.
The strip when bent into shape as illustrated in Fig. 2 is provided with inbent portions 12 and meeting portions 13 which are united by passing a rivet 19 or the like through the holes 7.
The body or handle portions 3 serve to form a handle as shown in Fig. 2 by which the scraper may be suspended on a nail or the like; or the members of the body por- 7 ft is s inner Fig. 2 ,but showing fa; modified handle. Aportion is broken tion 3 may e pa t l y s dit se e.9 1; cept at'the portion'3 such portion-3 -be1-nglooped to form an eye by which the scraper may be suspended fi-Ijom a-na-i-l vor the l k e.
In the latter embodiment suitable sec tionedahandles 15 are used..-,tl1hese maybe a of wood or other suitable material ormatee rials. They are preferably secured to the body port n by.
If desired the broad scrap ng e be dispensed with and the-blank cut as h w i i The, mend d. en i .9 7 l 9-andthe rounded point 5 which willreadily entelj and remove dirt irom crey ices and seams. ,ip'lh i b adssc p i 1 e.- may be used after the manner of a hoe and is partieularly adapted, for removing obstinate mud or-adhesions from the back or front of the heel and underneath the instep and sole.
Having now ;described. my invention, what I claini as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent: iSi:,- 1 i-, .1 -17 1;; t
,1. a A hand-operated scraping implement, consisting of a single strip of metal bent transversely upon itself to form abody por tion an d a pair of closely-associatedscrap: 111g arms, "one of 'WhlCh terminates 1n a curved and twisted portion tapering to a rounded point.
2;sha r p m ei rap tl ht. consisting of a single strip of metal bent transyersely upon itself to form a body portion and a pair" of closelyJ-associated scraping arms oneofwhich terminates ina' curved, and tw sted port on, the other arm having an outwardly-curved terminal portion. I v
