Description

L. F. WESCHE FLAG HOLDER.
APPLICATION FILED my 28. m1.

LOUISEWESCHE 58m (1 nm my "UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
LOUIS Ii. WESCI-IE, OF WEBB, IOWA.
FLAG-HOLDER.
Application filed May 28, 1817.
"To, all whom we concern: Be it known tiat 1 Louis F wnsoan,
a citizen of the United "Webb, in the count of Clay and ;State' of Iowa,have invente certain new and useful Improvements in Flag-Holders, of which i proyide a very simple attachment which structurefand which will support either glelfrelatively ,large flagor a plurality:
ller flagsnj p her objectin this connection is-to le of i the, ,or the position of the the'r ob eot'1s to provide a construe,
.tion as referred to which, when two flags are a be soiadjusted that the-flags are "disposed; at diflercnt-angles with relation to eachlbtlier. i a
'Aif further object-isto provide adevice of thislcha'racter which ishvery simple, may be cheaply made, easy to put in place, and easily adjusted. 1
Other objects will appear in the course of the following description.
. My invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, wherein a Figure 1 is a longitudinal sectional view of my improved flag holder, the members 12 and15 being in elevation and the flag stafi iii section; Fig. 2 is a vertical sectional view of the holder;
Fig. 3 is a front elevation of the flag holder with the clamping members disposed to support a single flag stafl' Fig. 4 is alike view to Fig. 3, but showing the clamping members disposed so as to engage divergent flag staffs;
Fig. 5 is a View showing the confronting faces of the clamping members;
Fig. 6 is a. fragmentary elevation of a portion of anantomobile with my improved fia g bolder applied thereto.
Referring to these figures, 1O designates a cylindrical shell of metal, or any other suitable material, which is supported from def ormation at one end by a transverse bar 11.
Specification oI Letters Patent.
States, residing at which is reduced for a portion of its length ma be easily, applied to i an automobile or a device of this character; in which H 1 to'any desired part oithe automobile,'I 'ro- I-vide a strap 19, through the middle of w ich a screw shank 16 passes, the nut18being Fig. 5, whereby'to hold the cap sections 111 Patented Dec.25,1917.
Serial No. 171,522.,
On the other end of this shell is disposed a plug or cap 12, which may be'of wood,
metal or any other suitable material, and
as at 13, so as toset within the end of the shell, this cap section 12 being centrally perforated and being formed with one or more diametrically extending grooves 14.
Coacting with the caprsection 12 is a sec: end cap section 15, which abuts against the outer face of the cap section 12 and is centrally perforated and is also formed with a diametr cally extending channel or groove 1-1. There may be one or more of these grooves. Passing centrally through the cap sections 12 and 1.5 is a tightening screw 16 having a notched head 17, the shank of the screw being screw-threaded for engagement byanut18.
For the purposehof attaching thisi device disposed outward of the strap. The strap is provided with'a buckle 20. 1
. he confronting faces of he cap sections 12 and 15may also be formed with a plurality of radiating teeth-21, as illustrated in their adjusted positions. a
In the practical use of this device, the strap is placed around a tubular. standard or other part of an automobile,- which is designated A in the drawing and tightened and buckled, so that the body 10 is firmly supported upon the standard and projects out therefrom. If one large fla is desired to be supported by the flag hol er, the sectons 12 and 15 which constitute clamps are brought to such a position that the recesses '14 and 14 are coincident and will clamp on each side of the flag stafi. If, on the other hand, it is desired to dispose two fla s having relatively small stafls uponthe lioldcr, then the members 1-2 and 15 are rotated to such a position that the grooves 14 and 14 will be disposed in divergent or in an ular relation and the relatively small sta s of the flags are disposed in these recesses 14 and 14 (see Fig. 3). When the flag or flags are properly disposed between the clamping sections 12 and 15, then the screws 16 may be turned with relation to the nut 18 by rotating the screw by means of a screw (lri ver, the not being held from rotation by the strap 19. It will be further seen that a rotation of the screw 16, not only acts to draw the sections [2 and 15 into clamping engagement with each other and with the flag staffs, but that it also tightens up u on the strap 19 so that a very secure hol mg action is provided for. It will likewise be observed that both of the clamping men bers 1:2 and 15 may be rotated around the axis of the holder so that the flags may be disposed in any desired relation or at any desired angle and that when two flags are used, they may be disposed at anyclesired angle with relation to each other or to the machine. While I have devised this invention for particular use with automobiles as' a means for supporting flags or other decorations thereon, I wish it understood that it might be used in other circumstances for more or less like purposes and that I do not wish to be limited to the details of construction which are illustrated.
Having described my invention, whatI claim is 1. A flag holder comprising a tubular body open at its opposite ends, coacting flag staff clamping. members rotatably mounted upon one end of the body, a clamping loop adapted to engage an article and passing into the other end of the body, and means disposed within the tubular body for urging said clamping members toward each other-and coincidently drawing the article clamping loop into the body;
2. A flag holder of the character described comprising a hollow cylindrical body, a clamping member closing one end of the body and having rotatable engagement therewith and formed upon its outer face with a transversely extending groove, 11 second clamping member confronting the first and having a transversely extending groove on its inner face, a bolt having an exterior head passing through said clamping members into the interior of the body, a strap t-hrou h which said boltpasses and having a buc (1e, the strap extending out of the hollow body, and a nut on the bolt outward of,thc strap and with which the strap engages. I b
A flag holder of the character described comprising a hollow cylindrical body, a clamping member clOSiIl one end of the body and having rotatab e engagement therewith and formed upon its outer face with a transversely extending groove, a second clamping member confronting the first and having a transversely extending groove on its inner face, a bolt havin an ex.- terior head passing through said 0 ampin 1 members into the interior of the body, and means for holding the body upon a supportin member. i I
n testimony whereof I hereunto aflix my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
