NOZZLE.
Application led June 15, 1914.
To all 'whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, VILLIAM SCHRANK, a citizen of the United States, residing at Philadelphia, in the county of Philadelphia and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements 1n Nozzles, of which the following is a speciication.
This invention relates t0 improvements in nozzles and has for its object to provide a combined water spray, jet, and sprinkler.
Another object of the invention is to provide a ire hose nozzle having means for producing a water shield.
Still another object of the invention is to provide a fire hose nozzle having a sprinkler in combination therewith.
With the above and other objects in view, I have invented the device illustrated in the accompanying drawings in which- Figure 1, is a longitudinal, sectional view of my improved nozzle.
Fig. 2, is a detail plan view of a closure member.
Fig. 3, is a section on line A-A of Fig. 1.
Fig. 4, is a top plan view of Fig. 1, with a collar removed.
Fig. 5, is a view similar to Fig. 1, of a modied form of the device.
Fig. 6, is a section on line A-A of Fig. 4.
Fig. 7, is a detail plan view of a valve member,
Fig. 8, is a section on line B-B of Fig. 5 and Fig. 1.
Like reference characters designate like or corresponding parts throughout the diiferent views in which 1, indicates a nozzle consisting of a valve chamber 2, having an inlet 3, and an outlet 4, which are internally screw-threaded, the latter to receive the screw threaded bell-shaped spray member 5. At its inner end, the member 5, is provided with a series of screw-threaded lugs 6, to which the similar shaped but smaller spreader member 7, is screwed. The member 7, is provided with a series of passages 8, and a larger central passage 9, the projecting wall portion 10, being screw-threaded at its extreme end to receive the nozzle 11. A collar 12, is adapted to seat revolubly on the portion 10, and is provided with a series of peripheral projections 13, which are equal in number to the openings 8, and which in one position of said collar 12, are adapted to form closures for the said openings 8.

length to aline with the inlet 3, when the valve is in any one of several positions. The opening 16, is large enough in diameter to admit liquid into the openings 8, as well as the opening 9. A series of openings 18, in the wall 15, are adapted to aline with the outlet 19, between the members 5 and 7, and the portion 20, of the wall 15, is adapted t0 close the outlets 8 and 9, when the openings, 18, aline with the outlet 19. The wall portion 21, is adapted to form a closure for all of the outlets 8, 9 and 19, and together with the wall portions 22, is adapted to close the outlet 19, when the opening 16, alines with the openings 8 and 9. lVhen the opening 16, is brought adjacent and in alinement with the opening 3, the opening 17, permits the passage of liquid from the chamber 23, to all of the Openings 8, 9, and 19. A lever 24, is lined to the boss 25, on the exposed side wall 26, of the member 14, whereby said valve may be operated. The member 14 is also provided with a screw portion 27, which projects through the opening 28, in the wall 29, in the chamber 2, to receive the nut 30, whereby said valve member 14, is held in place. The collar 12, has a slot 31, through which projects the screw 32, whereby said collar is held rotatably in place.
From the above description it will be readily seen that a single stream of liquid may be forced through only the outlet 9, or through only the outlets 8, where a spray is provided, or through the outlet 19, in which case a continuous thin wall of liquid is had which will either form a shield of water for a fireman, to protect him from the heat of a flame or act as a sprinkler of a large surface, or water may be passed through any desired combination of the outlets.
In Figs. 5 and 6, I show a modification-of the invention in which the spraying nozzle 33, is fo-rmed of a single piece, the members 34 and V35, being held together by integrally connecting webs 36, between which are openings 37. There is only one central outlet V38, in the member 35.
Having thus described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. The described device consisting `of a nozzle formed of a pair of bell shaped members one within the other, said members bcing spaced apart toV form a flaring passage, said inner member having a plurality ot passages, a tubular extension on said inner member and means on said extension for closing said plurality of passages.
2. The described device consisting of a nozzle formed of a pair et bell shaped members one within the other, Said members being spaced apart to form a flaring passage, and screw threaded ribs on the inner surface of said outer member, said inner member being screw threaded whereby said members are held together.
3. A nozzle having an outer tube and an inner tube screwed thereto, said inner tube having a central channel and a series of smaller channels spaced therearound, said tubes being separable from one another, the walls et said central channel projecting beyond the walls of said smaller channels, a collar rotatable on said projection having means for closing said smaller channels, said means consisting of longitudinal ribs.
4. A nozzle having an outer tube and an inner tube screwed thereto, said inner tube having a central channel and a series of smalle-1' channels spaced therearound, said tubes being separable from one another, the walls of said central channel projecting beyond the walls of said smaller channels, a collar Arotatable on said projection having means for closing said Smaller channels, said means consisting ot longitudinal ribs, said nozzle having a cylindrical enlargement and a cylindrical valve member rotatable therein.
5. A nozzle having an outer tube and an inner tube screwed thereto, said inner tube having a central channel and a series of smaller channels spaced therearound, said tubes being separable from one another, the walls of said central channel projecting beyond the walls of said smaller channels, a collar rotatable on said projection having means for closing said smaller channels, said means consisting of longitudinal ribs, said nozzle having a cylindrical enlargement and a cylindrical valve member rotatable therein,
said member having a plurality ot openings therethrough.
G. A nozzle having an outer tube and an inner tube screwed thereto, said inner tube having a central channel and a series of smaller channels spaced therearound, said tubes being separable from one another, the walls of said central channel projecting beyond the walls of said smaller channels, a collar rotatable on said projection having Copies of this patent may beobtaned for ve cents each, by addressing the Commissioner Vsaid member having a plurality means for closing said smaller channels, said means consisting of longitudinal ribs, said nozzle having a cylindrical enlargement and a cylindrical valve member rotatable therein, of openings therethrough, and means for closing one or more of the passages through said tubes.

A nozzle having an outer tube and an inner tubey screwed thereto, said inner tube having a central channel and a series of smaller channels spaced therearound, said tubes being separable from one another, the walls oi said central channel projecting beyond the walls of said'smaller channels, a collar rotatable on said projection having means for closing said smaller channels, said means consisting of longitudinal ribs, vsaid nozzle having a cylindrical enlargementV and a cylindrical valve member rotatable therein, said member havinga Vplurality of openings therethrough and means forclosing one or more of the passages through said tubes, said outer tube being flared, the outer wall of said innerv tube being flared, said outer tube having internal screw threaded ribs to which said inner tube screws.
8. The described device consisting of a nozzle formed of a pair of bell shaped members one within 'the other, said inner member having a tubular extension, said members being spaced apart to form adaring passage, said inner member having a central passage connected with the tubular extension and a plurality of smaller passages around said central passage, a rotatable collar on said extension having means for closing said smaller passages.
9. The described device embracing a valve member and a nozzle, said nozzle consisting of a pair of bell shaped members, one within the other, said inner member having a tubular extension, said members being spaced apart to form a flaring passage, said inner member having a central passage connected with the tubular extension and a plurality of smaller passages around said central passage, a rotatable collar on said extension having means for closing said smaller passages, said means consisting ot a plurality of longitudinal ribs, said valve member having ports adapted to aline with one, certain of, or all of said passages.
