To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, DENNIS F. KIRBY, a citizen of the United States of America, and a resident of lVaterloo, Blackhawk county, Iowa,- have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Bar-Bending Machines, of which'the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in bar-bending machines, and the object of my improvement is to furnish such a machine with means to bend a bar to any desired angle, said means containing adjustable elements adapted to render the machine capable of operating upon bars of different sizes.
This object I have accomplished by the mechanism which is hereinafter described and claimed, and which is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a perspective view of my improved barbending machine, and Fig. 2 is a plan thereof.
Simila numerals of reference denote corresponding parts throughout the several views.
My improved bar-bending machine comprises supporting-means for the moving parts, consisting of a frame having two heavy spaced superposed horizontal plates 1 and 3, held spaced apart by a plurality of spacing standards 2 with diminished threaded ends 4 passing through orifices in the uppe plate 1 to receive securing nuts.
The numerals 5 and 6 denote spaced parallel abutments having respectively buttresses 32 and 31 and formed integrally with and extending upwardly from the upper plate 1, in a general medial longitudinal direction, the abutment 6 being shorter than the abutment 5 and projecting beyond one end of the latter and having an enlargement at that end orificed to provide an upper bearingopening for a rotatable shaft 8, the other end of said shaft being seated in an alined opening or socket in the lower plate 3. On the shaft 8, between said plates, is fixed a relatively large gear-sector 9 having an oppositely extending arm 19. A rotatable spindle 21 projects upwardly from the end of this arm, being seated in one of two sockets 20 adjustably, and a roller 22 having an annular flange 23 at its upper end is mounted upon this spindle fixedly but removably by means of a set-screw 30.

on the sector concentrically, the slide having its outer end bent upwardly at a right angle to form a stop-member 13, and the slide being provided with a longitudinal slot 11 positioned over one of said bolt-holes, a bolt 12 being passed removably through the slot and said bolt-hole to secure the slide upon the sector in an adjusted position. The adjacent part of the overlying plate 1 is formed suitably to be engaged squarely by the stopmember 13 so that the latter can limit the scope of rotational movement of the gear-sector.
The plates 1 and 3 also have alined vertical orifices to receive a rotatable shaft 14-, carrying between said plates, a pinion 15, the latter being in mesh with the teeth of the gear-sector 9. i I
The upper end of said shaft above the plate 1 has fixed thereon an enlarged head 16 provided with diametral horizontal orifices crossing at different angles to removably receive hand-lever 18. It is obvious, however, that other means may be employed to rock the pinion 15, such as another pinion in mesh therewith or the like to increase the power at the expense of speed, without departing from my invention.
The numeral 25 denotes a pivot-bolt secured in an opening in the plate 1, removably, and a roller 24: has two eccentrically located orifices 26 either of which may be used to seat the roller rotatably upon the pivot-bolt, adjustably. The roller 24 has a handle 27.
The numeral 7 denotes a spacing-block adapted to be seated between the abutments 5 and 6, spaced a desired distance from the abutment 5 and engaged with the abutment 6, removably, to permit of holding a bar 28 between it and said abutment 5, and any desired number of said blocks may be used to replace each other, to thus permit the machine to bend bars of difierent thicknesses. The left-hand end of the abutment 6 is cylindrical and used to bend a curved angle in a bar, while the spacing-block 7 may have an angle as shown to form an abrupt angle in the bent bar, or may be otherwise shaped to effect a different angle in the bar.
In the views, the machine is ready to bend a bar 28 which has been fitted between the spacing-block 7 and the abutment 5, and which is locked in position by the engagement with it of the eccentric roller 24. When the hand-lever 18 is employed to rock Patented Dec. 18, 1917.
the pinion l5 and gear-sector 9, the roller 22 on the sector-arm 19 engages and forces the adjacent end of the bar 28 about the forming angle of the spacing -block 7, whereby the bar is bent abruptly and to an angle determined by the limit imposed upon the rotation of the sector by reason of the impinging of the stop-member 13 with the edge-part 29 of the plate 1. The bar 28 may then be readily removed by rocking the ec centric roller 24: out of engagement With it. The annular flange 23 on the roller 22 prevents the bar 28 from lifting away from the plate 1 during the operation of bending, but this flange may be omitted if desired. The spindle 21 may be seated in either hole 20, adjustably, to vary the leverage action upon the bar 28 as may be necessary in handling bars of difi'erent sizes or to Vary the form of the angle or curve to be made therein. In like manner, the eccentric roller 24k may be mounted pivotally at varying distances from the abutment 5, to thereby vary the scope of its action relative to bars of different thicknesses.
Having described my invention, What' I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:
In a bar-bending machine, superposed spaced fixedly connected supporting bodies, a rack-sector pivotally mounted between said bodies, a pinion pivotally mounted between said bodies, and in mesh With said rack-sector, said plates having registering orifices, a shaft on Which said pinion is adapted to receive a bar to be bent between them, said sector having an oppositely directed arm provided With a pluralityof bearingbrificeS, a pintle adapted to be adjustably mounted in any of said orifices, an annular former-head mounted rotatably on said pintle and having an annular flange positioned at its top, a slotted stop on said sector having an angular projection adapted to engage an edge of the upper body to limit the movement of the sector in one direction, and removable securing-means seated in the slot of said stop and securing it adjustably to said sector.
