Toallwh'om it mayconcem:
Be it known that I, "HUGH T. Nests, a subject of theK-in'g ofEngla'nd, resident of Seacome, in the county of Cheshire, England, have made a certain new 'and tisiliul Invention in Doors for Steam-Boilers; and I declare the followingtobe a-full,"clear, and'exact'description of the same, such as will enable others skilled in the art'to'wh'i'ch it appertains to make anduse the'invention, reference. being had to the accompanying drawings, and to'lett'ers or figures of reierence marked thereon, which formafpart of this specification.
Figure 1 is a top plan view oftheinvention with one half of the outer door section removed.
Fig. 2 is a section of the door on the line 2-2, Fig. 1.
Fig. 3 is a similar view with the nuts of the connecting bolts removed, and the key engaged with the central bolt.
Fig. 1 is a similar view with the lower door section in lowered position.
The invention has relation to manhole or handhole doors for steam boiler shells, and it consists in the novel construction and combinations of parts, as hereinafter set forth.
In the accompanying drawings, illustrating the invention, the numeral 2 designates the boiler shell, having an elliptical opening 3, an annular elliptical reinforcing memher 4 being located upon the inner side of said shell and bolted thereto at 5, said member projecting within said opening.
The door is composed of inner and outer elliptical sections 6 and 7 the inner section having a marginal flange 8 abutting against a lateral surface of the member 4: through the medium of an annular elliptical washer 9; and a short tubular portion 10 fitting closely within the opening of the reinforcing member and of a length or transverse extent equal to the thickness of said member plus that of said washer, the outer surface of the tubular flange being flush with the outer surface of said member. The inner section is provided with a plurality of short outwardly extending tubular projections or bosses 11, spaced apart. from each other and from the member 4, and also of a length or transverse extent equal to the thickness of the said member plus that of said washer and 'lizrvin'g t'lieiroiiter surfaces fi ush with the outer surface of said member. j
V The outer doorsection is providedwith a marginal 'fiangef12, fitting closely'within the opening of-the i boiler "shell and abutting against the outer side :of the meinb'e'r 4 through the'medium of an annular elliptiealwasher 13 ;and with a comparatively long tubular portion 14 1115. a'l inenie'nt with the I tubular flange of the inner deer "section and or greate thickness than that of," the 10, to o'v erl ap the member 4 and Ie iiiforc'ethe'flange 12. The outer doo'n'sec tion is an provided with a. plurality er i ward extending tubular bosses er at-ejections jl5, spalce'd apart from each other and from j l efla-nge 14 and overlylng orfm alinement with the tubular bosses of the inner door section, annular washers 16 being located between the tubular bosses of the two door sections. 1
The door sections are connected by transverse bolts 17 fitting within the alined' tubular bosses and having exterior nuts 18,
I Specification of Letters Patent, j -Pafe teflgbeigs1 s,
the two sections being thereby brought forcibly together to clamp the member 4: between their marginal flanges and to clamp the tubular bosses, through the medium of the washers, the washers of said bosses being thereby compressed and engaging said bolts to pack the bolt holes in a steam and water tight. manner.
The tubular bosses of each door section are connected with each other and with the tubular flanges of the respective section by means of cross-ribs 20, said ribs being joined by the tubular bosses and the ribs of the two door sections being spaced apart from each other by the thickness of the washers16.. I
The tubular flangesof the door sections form a hollow door, having openings to the outer air at 21 throughthe outer door section, said openings being located between the tubular bosses, and the door being thereby" air-cooled," the air being admitted be-' tween thecross-ribsot the respective sec tionsspaced apart by the washers 16.
In opening the'door, the central nut 18 is first removed from its bolt, a key22 then having its threaded end 23 engagedwith an after which a large nut 25 is screwed down 10.5 interiorly threaded recess 24; ofsaid bolt,
into contact with the outer door section, the two sections being thereby held securely together, and the other nuts 18' being next removed from their bolts.
The key 22 is then grasped by its handle and the nut 25 screwed outwardly upon the key to gradually lower the inner door section until it rests upon the supports 27. 'The key 22 "is finally released from the center bolt, the outer door section removed, and the inner door section turned at rightangles and removed edgewise through the opening of the member 4:.
I claim: I
The combination with a steam boiler having ashell provided with an opening, an inner annular reinforcing member projecting within said opening, and supports spaced apart from said member, of a door comprising an inner section having a marginal flange engaging a lateral surface of said member, and a tubular portion fitting closely within the opening of said member, a plurality of tubular projections, and strengthening ribs connecting said tubular projectionswith said tubular portion, an
outer section having perforations leading to the outer-air, a marginal 'flange fitting closely W1th1n the opening of said shell and engaging the other lateral surface of said member, a tubular portion in alinement with and. of greater thickness than that of the tubular portion of said inner section and overlapping said reinforcing member, a plurality of tubular projections in alinement with the projections of said inner section, aiidstrfigthenifig ribs connecting said tubular projections with said tubula portion, transverse bolts engaging the tubular projections of said sections and having removable nuts threaded thereon, annular washers located between the marginal flanges of said sections and the lateral surfaces of said reinforcing member, and annular washers located between the tubular projections of said sections. In testimony whereof I aflix my signature, in presence of two witnesses. HUGH T. NOBLE.
Witnesses:
