To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, WILLIAM HUB LE,
means of building and constructing pulleys.
The primary object of this invention is to construct a pulley of wood and metal by providing a metal hub which is adapted to carry and retain a series of longitudinal wooden bars to form the periphery of the Further objects are to provide means of securely clamping a series of longitudinal wooden bars to a metal hub, thereby forming segmental portions of the periphery of a pulley and leaving interstices between the bars, which in combination with the wooden surfaces of the bars permits the air to escape and prevents it from forming air cushions between the belt and that portion of the periphery of the pulley with which it is in contact; provides maximum working adhesion and close contact of the belt with the pulley; permits elastic contact of the belt with the periphery of the pulley and provides a gripping contact between the edges of the bars and belt; said attributes not being common in the conventional type of metal or wood pulley, (especially the smaller sizes).
Another object is to provide a method of building a pulley that will retain all the advantages of a wooden pulley and eliminate its disadvantages such as warping, expanding and contracting of the wood, which has the effect of throwing the periphery out of true, thereby preventing the proper transmission of power or pressure of the belt upon the periphery of the pulley.
A furtherobject is to provide means of varying the width of the face and diameter of the pulley easily, conveniently and rapidly by. an interchange of the longitudinal wooden bars forming the periphery of the pulley without removing the pulley from the shaft upon which it is mounted.

I attain these and other objects by the mechanism illustrated in the accompanying V d rawing'in which Figure 1'. is an, end view showing the detail of the assembly of the pulley; Fig. 2. is a vertical; side elevation of Fig. 1 on the line showing a part of the periphery omitted andin section to show its construction more clearly.
In the drawing reference numeral 1 represents a hub provided with cupped shaped annular undercut recesses ,2 and 8 forming sleeve like projections and 5. A series of longitudinalradial ridge flangeslfi extend from the periphery of the undercut pro.- jections and the hub formingtapered pockets 7 to receive a series of longitudinal peripheral wooden bars '8 and maintain them spaced apart leaving interstices 9' between, the edges of each unit thereof. The bars are securely clamped in place by the slotted bolts 10 which pass through apertures in each end of the bars, and by the Inanipulation ofthe nuts 11 draw and retain the bars snugly within the tapered pockets. Toprovide for truing up the periphery of the bars as occasion may require, the apertures in the bars are countersunk as shown. The dotted lines 12 and 13 represent different heights of the longitudinal wooden bars which may be interchanged to vary the diameter of the pullev andthe dotted lines 14 and 15 repre-- sent different lengths of the bars which may. interchange to-vary the width of the face of hub to form V shaped open pockets, and a series of plane surface longitudinal bars spaced apart by said flanges and clamped in the pockets thereby forming the periphery of the pulley. In a pulley, a hub having its ends cupshaped and also having a series of radial plane surface flanges provided on the hub forming open pockets, a series of plane surface longitudinal wooden bars fitted to said pockets and held in spaced relation from each other by said flanges, and means to secure said bars in said pockets.

In a pulley a cup-shaped metal hub provided with a series of radial plane surface and open pockets, and a series of plane surface longitudinal wooden bars which are inserted in said pockets in spaced relation from each other to form the periphery of the pulley with interstices between the wooden bars. Ihe herein described pulley, comprising a cup-shaped metal hub provided with a series of plane surface radial pockets, a series of plane surface longitudinal wooden bars which are inserted in said pockets to form the periphery of the pulley with interstices between the bars thereby forming a pulley Ofmetal and wood, and a clamping means which afi'ords facilities for interchanging said wooden bars by lifting them from their respective pockets and replacing them with others to vary the diameter and the face of the pulley without removing the pulley from the shaft upon which it is mounted.

In a pulley, constructed of metal and wood, a series of planesurfacewooden bars in combination with'a hub having a series of plane surface open pockets provided upon its'periphery Which are adapted to receive said series of wooden bars therein; said bars being held in "spaced relation from each Copies of this patent may be obtained for five cents each, by addressing the Commissioner of Patents.
