'LUNTTED STATES PATENT OFFICE. I
ALvA MONTEL, or cLAYrooL, INDIANA.
FENCE-POST.
To all whomjt may concern.' i Be it known that I, ALVA MONTEL, a c1t1- l zen of the United States,I and a resident of Claypool, county of Kosciusko, and State of Indiana, have invented a certain new and useful Fence-Post; and I do hereby de-l clare that the following is a full, clear, and
exact description thereof, reference being 'l had to the accompanying drawings, in which like letters refer to like parts.
The object of this invention is to provide a metal fence post which may be. cheaply constructed and to which the wire fencing may be easily and quickly ,attached and which, after placed inthe ground, will be firmly held therein.' It consists of sheet metal bent longitudinally in an angular shape with its edges bent inwardly with a plurality of slotsmade in the angle in which the wire fencing may-be inserted, and ay rod is adapted to be inserted between the innerA surface of the' angle.and the wire fencing. This rod is the means of easily constructing the fence and firmly holdsv the fencing in the Slots. i
The bottom portion of the post has the inwardly bent edges and the sides pinched v together so as to form. a pocket in which dirt will settle after the post .isdrven into the ground and holds it firmly therein so as not to be easily withdrawn.
A The full nature of the invention will be understood from thefaccompanying draw-` following description: and
ings and the claim.
'In the drawings, Figure 1 is an elevation ofthe post and lfence in perspective. Fig.
2 is a front elevation of the post. Fig. 3
is a sectional elevation on the line 3 3 of Fig. 4.. Fig. 4 is a top end view o'f the post. Fig. 5 is a cross section onl the line 5'-5 of Fig. '6. Fig. 6 is anl enlarged view of a portion of the post, showing the details thereof. Figa 7 is the retaining rod.- Fig. 8 isla sectional View onA the line 8--S of Fig. v5. I n
There is shown in the drawings herein a fence post 1'0 formed. of sheet metal and Specificationl of Letters I|?atent.` /ateted Dec, 18, 191'? Application led February-26, 1914. Serial N o. 821,280.
bent longitudinally at an angle 11 and the edges 12 are turned inwardly, as shown in Fig. 5. A plurality of slots 14 are cut in the angle of the post at different intervals from the ground through which an equal number of fence wires 15 are'inserted. A retaining rod 16 is then inserted between the inner surfaceof the angle 11 and the fence wires 15 so as to firmly hold them in said slots. 'At the lower end of the post,
the pockets in the lower end will materially strengthen it in the ground.
The invention claimedis: A fence post made of metal plate bent transversely and centrally to yform two casings at substantially right angles to each other and with the edges of each wing turned .inward and backward substantially parallel with the'Win-g and bent inwardly and downwardly against .the body of the wing at the bottom so as to provide the-- post with two cup-shaped l pocketsv at its lower end, one pocket in each wing, said inwardly bent portion beingextended at an angle to .form a tapering surface and the downwardly bent portion extending vertically and resting against the faceofI the wing whereby the post may be readily driven into the ground.
In witness whereof I have hereunto afIiXed my signature in the presence of the witnesses herein named.
v f v ALVA MONTEL. Witnesses:
LOU D. FLEMING,
MURI. BARNHART.
