AUTOGRAPHIC REGISTER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
rammed Dec. 1 8, ram.
To" all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ERNEST ARNOLD FER- RABEE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Dayton, in the county of Montgomcry and State of Ohio, have invented cervide a cutter and arrange the same with reference to the machine, whereby the construction can be simplified and manufactured at a lower cost and whereby the liability of theparts becoming disarranged or broken is reduced to a minimum..
In the accompanying drawing, Figure 1 is a perspective view of an autographic register embodying the invention with the end plate removed; Fig. 2 is a longitudinal sectional view of such a register; and Fig. 3 is a detail perspective view of the forward portion of the cover.
In the embodiment of the' invention here shown the casing is indicated at 1, the support or table for the writingmaterial at 2, the rolls of writing material at 3 around which is wound the strips of such material, as indicated at 4. The several strips are directed around suitable guidin pulleys 5 above the table 2. In the pre erred construction these strips will be provided with a series of perforations along their edges, as is well known in this art. For feeding thepaper I have provided the feeding device 6 which has pins 7 projecting through the perforations of the paper. The feeding device is driven through the intermediate gearing from the handle 9. Inasmuch as the particular construction above shown is.
fully described in the application above mentioned and does not form a part of the present invention further description thereof it is thought is not necessary.
"Above the support or table for the writing material is the usual superimposed member or cover 10 provided with an opening 11 whereby {the writing material or paper is exposed. The forward edge of the cover,.1n
the present instance, is provided with a transversely extending strip or portion 12. The cover is held in locked osition by means of a suitable locking devlce 12'. As is clearly shown in Fig. 1. the strip 12 is of a thickness less than the thickness of the main portion of the cover and-the cover adjacent each of the ends of the strip is slightly recessed at 13 to receive the cutter which will be described more fully hereinafter. Projecting downwardly from the transversely extending strip 12 are a plurality of pins 14:. Loosely mounted upon the pins is my improved cutter 15. The connection between the .pins and cutter is a loose one, whereby the same may be easily rocked around the pins as an axis. The pins are attached to the cutter at points to the rear of the center of gravity thereof, whereby pull is exerted thereon, as shown in Fig. 2, whereby. the knife edge is swung around its ivot, bringing the rear edge of the cutter in contact with the several webs, whereby they are held clamped during the severing operation. The pins 7 project above the plane of the support 2 through slots 18 upon the cutter. This arrangement insures that the several webs of paper during the-feeding operation will be held in engagement with the pins and the tearing of the same will be prevented. 'The adjacent portions of the strip 12 above the pins may also be slightly scooped,as indicated at 19, to allow the rotation of the pins without interfering or engaging with the adjacent parts of the cover. I 1
It will-be seen that by the above construction I have provided a device which is very simple inwhich the cost of production is very low and which will not be easily disarrangcd or broken. The cutter very easily responds to the movements of the webs and the severing operation can be as qulckly done.
While I have shown and described one embodiment of the invention it will be understood that the same has been chosen for purposes of illustration and that I do not desire to be limited to the details of construction shown and described, for obvious modifications will occur to a person skilled in the art.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is'-:
1. In a device of the character described, acov'er above a support provided with a transversely extending portion at the front thereof forming a recess, pins projecting downwardly from said transversely extending portion, a curved cutter loosely mounted momma c on said pins at points to the rear of its center of gravity beneath said transversely extending portion and-in said recess, a longitudinally extending slot at each end of said cutter, and a feeding mechanism provided with pins p'rojecting'above said support into said slots.
2. In a device of the character described, a curved plate with' .holes therein about midway its width, pins on a support above said plate, projecting through said holes, a rotary support beneath said plate to carry paper, pins on said rotary support projecting through the paper and traveling through slots in said plate.
In testimony whereof, I afiix my signature.
