Application filezl October 18, 1915. Serial No, 58, 32
a draft gear of verv high capacity which is particularly adapted for use on the front ends of locomotives where the same are required to he confined ina relatively small space.
In the drawing forming a part of this specilimtion, Figure 1 is horizontal, sectional iew of a draft gear embodying my improvements. parts of the locomotive frame being shown in section. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal, vertical sectional view taken substantially on the lines 2-2 of Fig. 1. Figs 3 and i on the lines 38 and 4%, respectively, of Fig. 2. Fig. 5 is a detail elevation of one of the wedges with its extension,
In said drawing, denotes the portion of the locomotive frame at the forward end thereof, the same being provided with a substantially rectangular pocket ll within which is mounted the improved gear.
As shown, the gear comprises a casting 12 having a pair of friction cylinders l3 cast integrally therewith, said cylinders being spacedapart and on opposite sides of the casting 12. Each of the friction cylinders 13 merges with a spring casing 1-1 at the rear thereof, each of the spring casings 14- having an integral rear wall 15, said walls 15 being perforated to receive therethrough extensions 16 in the form of bolts which are formed integrally with wedges 1'2" of the friction mechanisms. At the of the walls or partitions is provic d a transversely extending chainher vii-thin which is slidably mounted an evener equalizer 18, the latter being perforated and receiving through the perforations the rear or inner ends of the bolts 16 on which are carried the retaining nuts l919. Cooperating with each of the friction cylinders 13 a e friction 20' and a, wedge 2'1 there a pinare transverse, sectional views taken rality of anti-friction rollers 21 interposed between each wedge and the cooperating set of friction shoes. At the rear of each set of friction shoes within each spring casing 14 and surrounding the bolts or wedge extensions 16, is a heavy spring The parallel friction shells and spring casings are spaced sullicicntly to permit the rear end of the draw-bar 23 to pass therebetween, the. inner end. of the draw-bar 25 abutting a hollow forward extensmn 2% formed centrally on the equalizer 18, said extension 2% being confined between. the in nor walls of the friction casings. A U- shaped short yoke straddles the rear end of the casting l2 and is connected to the inner end of the draw-bar 23 by means of a vertically extending key 26, the latter being slidable fearwardly in elongated slots 27 formed in the uoper and lower arms of the yoke The key 26 is adapted to he inserted through an upper opening 22 in the frame work of the locomotive and the lower end of the hey slidable in a similar lower opening 29. in normal position of the parts, the front face of the extension 24 engages two vertical, removable keys or stops 3030 which extend. through the upper ano lower walls of the locomotive casting l0 and thereby prevent the so ualizcr 18 from being moved forwardly Each of the vertically extending keys 30 is also preferably beveled on its inner face as indicated at 3l to thereby accommodate adial movements of the drawbar 23.
draftv the er; nary by the keys 36, the forward movement of the yoke will pull the main castinglfl forwardy and lence the friction shells 13 will slide relatively to the friction shoes and friction will be created due to the gradual compression of the springs 22. The amount of compression under bufi' is limited by engagement of the equalizer l8 arrangement of shells and casings ialli" with the rear Wall 32 and, under (ire-ft, by engagement of the yoke. with the equalizer 18.
From the preceding description, it be seen that the gear which i have provioiecl is of very high capacity and on account of the I are en ablezl to mount the rear and of the clmrwber between the friction mechanisms, thereby providing a, gear of very short length on its center line.
Various changes and modifications may he be made in the details of construction. and arrangement of the parts without slop from the spirit of the invention, anti i cow template all such changes and modifications as come Within the scope of the claim," pended hereto. In this connection it Wi course, be obvious that the gear i eels for other use than merely on locomotives;
I claim:
1. In a device of thechorecter clwcribecl, the combination with spaced .pereiieiiy ranged friction shells, friction devices co operable therewith at the front thereof, springs at the rear of said friction devices, of an equalizer actuated by the draiv hor in loufl, connections between said equaliser and the friction devices, and. means loceted between the friction shells for preventing forward movement of the equalizer.
2. In e device of the character describes},
the combination with spaced friction shells adapted to have a (lrewhar extend there between, of an equalizer with which the draw-bar is adapted to directly engage sn operate under buff, friction elements coil springs Within each of said. shells, saicl shells being prevented from rearward movement under but? the friction elements bein moved reerwerdly simultaneously by saioi equalizer upon rearward movement of the drowiaar.
3. In e device of the character described, the combination -with spaced. goarallelly errerlgecl friction shells, friction devices co operable therewith at the front enrls thereof, springs stthe rear of seiclfriction devices, oi an equalizer actuated by the draw bar in boil, and. connections between said u lizzor and. the friction devices, said iiig stationery under draft n shells being forwardly movable with the drew-ban 4. in o clevi'ce of the character described, the corohinstion with s cm. structure having as pocket therein, of a casting slirlehly mounted in said pocket, said casting hev-. mg formed integrally therewith a pair of spaced, comhioecl friction shell and spring casings, friction elements and springs Within each of said casings, ssicl friction elements including Wedge having a rearward extension, means connecting; said extensions whereby the iatter ere operated simultens ouch, one; s drew-3hr for operating said nieehs, I
in "witness that Ii claim the foregoing l1 have hereunto subscribed my name this 4th day of @ctooer, 1915.
