Be it known that I, FRANK AQCoNNoLLY,
Varcitizen of vthe United States, residing at Pompton Lakes, in the county of Passaic andState vof New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements -in Mixing and Cooling Machines, of whichthe following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawing.
My invention relates to improvements in mixing and cooling machines, especially adapted for the manufacture of smokeless powder; but I do notwish to limit the application of my invention to that particular object, as my mixing and cooling machine is adapted for kindred uses and for the miX- ing and cooling of `other materials than plain or smokeless powder.
My invention accordingly consists 'in 'a mixing and coolingmachine, in which the material is treated in a rotatable drum,
turning in one direction and provided-with a series of obliquely yarranged vanes which are secured to its inner surface, and deflect the material laterally, and in which the material is acted upon 'by hollow agitator blades carried by and communicating withvv a tubular driving shaft, turning in an opposite direction, through which a current of brine or other cooling liquid or semi-liquid is caused to ow, whereby the mixing and cooling lof the material is simultaneously accomplished with a great degree of eiiiciency and safety.
The invention consists in the construction, arrangement and combination of the parts to be hereinafter described and particularly pointed out in the subjoined claims.

A cooling medium is forced into the pipe e and flows through the shaft b and blades c, the direction of its flow being determined by Stoppers Z, the medium nally escaping through outlet pipe e.
Power may be supplied to drive they sprockets wheels -fvand suitable manner.
The material in the drum of my mixing machine is not permitted to lie in an inert mass. It is kept constantly in agitation. The tubular blades revolving in one direction and the drum revolving in the opposite di- -fwin any rection, cofacting with the obliquely ar ranged vanes, act to thoroughly and safely mix the material while at the same time keeping it cool. Y
The brine, passing through the tubular shaft and blades flows in the direction shown by the arrows in Fig. l, as determined by the Stoppers -Z-Z-. i
The Vroller Ybearings fm-,- for the drum -aand the roller bearings --fnfor the wheel 7L- facilitate the operation of the 'machina the material in the revolving drum being deiiected in one direction laterally, and at the same time being carried forward in the direction of the rotation of the drum, is met while falling from the varies, by the tubular blades which are revolving in the opposite direction and hence the material is quickly and thoroughly mixed and, while being so mixed, the material is cooled by the flow of brine or other cooling liquid or semi-liquid, which is passing through the tubular lshaft and tubular blades.
With this description of my invention, what I claim is 1. A mixing and cooling machine, comprising a drum provided with obliquely arranged internal vanes, a hollow shaft, adapted to receive a cooling medium, passing through said drum, hollow blades radially and parallelly mounted on said shaft,
and means to rotate said drum and shaft in opposite directions.
2. A mixing and cooling machine, coinprising a frame, a drum rotatably mounted in said frame, means whereby material can vbe fed into and removed from said drum, a
hollow shaft, adapted to receive a cooling medium rotatably mounted in said frame and passing centrally through the same, radial pipes carried by saidshaft, connections between the outer ends of adjacent ones of said radial pipes, obstructions in said shaft to cause said medium to traverse said pipes and connections, and means to rotate said drum and shaft in opposite directions.V
3. A mixing and cooling machine, cornprising` a frame, a hollow shaft journaled therein, and adapted to receive a cooling medium, flanged collars secured to said shaft, a drum rotatably supported within the flanges of said collars, means to rotate said drum and shaft in opposite directions, and
agitator blades, consisting of radial pipes connectedV at their outer ends, secured to p and communicating with said shaft.
