Be it known that 1, JOHN P. Kxnma citizenxof the United States, residing at Aredale, in the county of Butler, State of Iowa, haveinvented certain"-new and useful I mprovements in Wagon-Box Attachments;
. and I do hereby declare thefollowinglto be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which'it appertains to make and use thesame. I I 7 My invention relates to wagon box at taching or looking devices and the objects thereof, resides in the provision of means for detachably-securing an auxiliary box or rack to the ordinary box of a wagon.
vice of the character aforesaid which is easy and 'efiicient in operation and which will prevent the rattling of the upper box or rack, and prevent in: a measure the warping or bulging of same. 7
The invention consists of the novel features, details of construction, and combination of parts, which hereinafter will be more particularly set forth, illustrated in-the,
accompanying drawings, and pointed'out in the appended'claims. Y
Referring to the drawings forming a part of the application,
Figure 1, is a side elevation of a portion of a wagon box and the auxiliary box, showing the application of my improved locking devicethereto.
Fig. 2, is a section of the boxes on'line 22 of Fig. 1, showing one of my devices in elevation.
Fig. 3, is a detail view of the latch mechanism with a portion of the tension spring attached thereto.
Fig. 4, is a detail view of the hookelement, and
Fig. 5, is a sectional view.
Corresponding and like parts are referred to in the following description and indicated in all the views of the drawings, by the same reference characters.
Referring now to the drawings, the numeral 5, designates the body or box ofa wagon comprising the usual construction, and having a plurality of cleats 6, adapted for the reception of the standards 7 onthe sides of the auxiliary box or rack 8, by which the latter is supported on the lower box 5.
As is well known, the upper box or rack ing-in a circular recess. The lnventlon further contemplates a de by its loose mountingon thelower box, has a tendency to excessively rattle and'upon'the wagon' encountering very rough or uneven roads, may becomedetached from the-lower boxand this objection is obviatedby my improved locking "device,- which comprises the latch and hook elements A andB.
The latch element A- comprises a'shoe' or plate 9, having an opening 9 for a'screw 10, and a lower opening 9" for the reception of a'bolt 11, whereby it is secured to the: upper box body 8, and being disposed at an angle thereon. The box body 8, is provided with'an opening for the passage of the bolt 11, therehrough, and has one end terminat- A, collarll' is mounted'in the lower opening 9", of the latch element and base portion seatedin the circular recess-of the box body. The bolt 11, passes through the collar 11' and the'boxbody, the parts are held in positionk.
A lever 12, has its lower end oflsettoformf a bearing 13, which-latter is apertured at 1-1, forthe reception ofthe'collar11', and they bolt 11, constituting its pivotal mounting onthe plate 9. The opposite end of the lever 12, terminates in a cylindrical pointed shank portion 15, adapted to be received by the bent over portion or book 16, on the upper end of the plate 9, when the device is inlocked position. Intermediate the ends, the lever 12, is provided with an outwardly bent portion 17, to provide clearance over the bolt 11, for the link 18, which is pivotally mounted on a pin 19, in the outwardly bent portion 17 of the lever. The link 18 is provided with an eye 20, which is permanently attached to the helical spring 21, while the opposite end of the spring is detachably connected to the hook 22, of the element B, on the lower wagon box.
The spring 21 tends to pull the lever 12 tensioned until the lever is carried past the vertical line through the bolt 11, when it is snapped into locking engagement with the hook 16. The link 18, obviously, swings in the line of tension of the spring 21, and when the lever 12 stands in locked position,
the link 18 extends downwardly upon the corresponding side of the bolt 11, the parts holding this position until the lever 12 is again swung to the right past the vertical line through the bolt 11. m V 7 It will thus be seen that the upper box or (rack will permanently carry the locking element A, while the lower box carries the hook element B, and any movement of the upper box relative to the lower box will be taken up by the spring 21, which serves to hold the bodies against vertical movement.
It is therefore obvious that all vibration and rattling encountered by the bodies will be in a great measure minimized and the said upper box is securely locked on the lower box, the locking elements being permanently carried by the respective boxes, and preventing the loss, or displacement of same. Likewise by the peculiar construction and mounting of the lever 12, on the plate 9, the collar 11, forms a bearing for. the said lever around which it may operate without the danger of the lever becoming loosely hung l through the rotation of the bolt 11.
From the foregoing description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawing, the advantages of construction and the method of operation will be readily apparent to those skilled in the art to which the invention appertains. While I have described the principle of operation of the invention together with the device which I now consider the embodiment thereof, I desire to have it understood that such changes may be made as are desired, within the scopes of the claims appended hereto.
lVhat is claimed is 1. A wagon box fastener comprising in combination, a base plate adapted to be secured to a wagon box, said base plate having a bearing formed at its lower end, a
locking device formed at its upper end, a' lever pivoted upon the bearing and shaped to engage with the locking device, a link pivotally carried by the lever at an intermediate point on the latter, a spring m0unt ed on the free end of the link, and a hook adapted to be secured to a second wagon box for engagement by the opposite end of the 7 spring, said hook being placed out of alinement with the locklng deviceand bearing and said locking device being adapted to catch the lever when the latter is carried past the point of alinement of the link and lever which determines the instant of maximum tension of the spring.
2. A locking device for wagon boxes, comprising in combination, a base plate adapted to be carried by a wagon box, a lever mount ed on one end of the base plate, a bearing for said lever, a locking device located at the opposite end of the base plate, a spring pivotally carried by the lever, and a hook adaptedto be carried by a second wagon box in position to be removably engaged bythe opposite end of said spring, said lever being adapted to be snapped into'engagement With'said locking device by said spring when it is carried past the line through the hook and bearing, said bearing consisting of a tubular sleeve passed through the base Copies of this patent may be obtained for five cents each, by addressing the Commissioner of Patents...
