Application filed January 21, 1915. Serial No. 3,592.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I,.ALVAH C. ROEBUCK, a citizen of the United States, residing at Woodstock, in the county of McHenry and State of Illinois, have invented'certain new and useful Improvementsin Eraser-Holders, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to a container or holder for erasers, more particularly for round erasers commonly used by typewriting operators, although, of course, it may have a general application wherever similarly employed.
The principal object of the invention is to provide a holder of this class particularly adapted to be used in connection with typewriting machines.
Further objects will be hereinafter set forth.
In the drawing, Figure 1 is a'plan View of a portion of a typewriter frame to which an eraser holder, constructed in accordance with the principles of this invention, is attached; Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the same, Fig. 3 is a perspective of the holder proper and Fig. 4 is a modification.
Typewriter operators generally use an eraser circular in form to make corrections in their work while it is still in the machine, and the most convenient place for keeping the eraser is on the frame of the machine where it can be easily found and quickly used and replaced. One of the great objections to this use is that the centers of such erasers are commonly provided with metal side disks which soon scratch the frame of the machine and quickly mutilate the japan,
thus giving the machine an unsightly appearance. Another objection to placing the eraser on the frame of the machine isthat the successive impacts caused in writing soon jar the eraser from the frame, causing much annoyance in finding and replacing it where it is convenient for use. The present invention relates to a slmple holder for erasers of this kind which is intended to be applied to the frame of a typewriting machine in which an eraser can be deposited after use, and from which it cannot be dislodged by ordinary impacts in the machine.
In the drawing, the numeral 5 designates, generally, the frame of a typewriting' machine, more particularly the top plate at the Side of such machine which has a horizontal surface, and in some types of machines is Specification of Letters Patent. Patented Dec. 18, 1917.
provided with a ribbonspool hol'der Adacent and in front of the ribbon spool holder 6 is a space upon which an eraser may beplaced and to which a-holder designated generally by the reference numeral 7,
may be applied. This holder comprises a flat base portion in which is a perforation 8 with aforwardly extending-tongue 9 which is rounded upwardly at its forward end to form a forward projection above the plane of the base. At. the rear the holder is formed the holder and the frame is a pad 13 of nonabrasive material, such as felt or the like,
to prevent the holder from scratching the frame. I
In using the holder, an eraser of the class to which the holder applies, is simply placed inthe holder, as shown by the dotted outline 14 in Figs. 1 and 2, and the eraser usually projects slightly beyond the curved portion of the tongue 9 so that it may be readily grasped by an operator for use. When in the holder the eraser is prevented from dislodgment because of the sides 11, and by reason of the fact that the upwardly projecting tongue holds the eraser at such an angle to the horizontal that it cannot be dislodged from the holder by the ordinary impacts due to the operation of the machine.
The rim or upward projection of the holder might be continued unbroken from one side to the other at the rear as shown by Fig. 4, having a rim 15, and the holder held in place on the frame by two or more screws placed inside of the holder through opening wardly to receive a round eraser therein, the
tongue tipping an eraser upwardly at the front and against the sides to prevent its dislodginent from the holder.
2. A holder for a round eraser having a flat base adapting it to be secured to a horizontal surface and with upturned sides curved rearwardly, and a raised front portion to hold an eraser inclined downwardly 7 and upstanding curved sides to accommodate and closely contain a round eraser, and with a space at the rear between the sides for the insertion of a persons finger to assist in removing an eraser therefrom.
t. The combination with a typewriter having a frame portion with a horizontal surface, of an eraser holder comprising a single piece of sheet material having a fiat base with an upwardly projecting front tongue and lateral upright sides extending from the front tongue about the edge but spaced apart 7 at the rear, and a perforated tongue at the rear between the ends of the upright portions, another perforation being provided in the body of the holder and a non-abrasive substance disposed between the holder and the frame, and means for fastening the holder to the frame through said perforations in the tongue and body of the holder.
In testimony whereof l have signed my name to this specification, in the presence of two subscribing witnesses, on this 16th day of January A. 19.15.
