Description

M/B. BARKMAN.
COMPRESSED AIR TANK.
APPLICATION FILED NOV 8. I915- 1,250,078. I Patented Dec; 11, 1917'. I
MARTIN B. BARKMAN, or 'HI L'LSBOROQKANSAS.
COMPRESSFD-AI IRI TANK.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, MARTIN B. BARKMAN,
a citizen of the United States, residing at Hillsboro, in the county of Marion, State of Kansas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Compressed-Air Tanks; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
The present invention is directed to improvements in compressed air tanks, and particularly adapted for storing air under pressure for sounding a whistle, and has for its object to so construct a tank for this purpose that the same can be readily charged with compressed air so that a constant pressure can be retained in the tank.
A further object of the invention is to provide a .novel means for mounting the pump within the tank, and further to provide a pump with a novel form of valve.
With these and other objects in view, this invention resides in the novel features of construction, formation, combination and arrangement of parts to be hereinafter more fully described, claimed and illustrated in the accompanying drawing, in which:
Figure 1 is a longitudinal sectional view through the tank. I
Fig. 2 is a sectional view on line 22 of Fig. 1.
Fig. 3 is a similar view on line 38 of Fig. 1.
Fig. 4 is a detail perspective view of the valve seat.
Referring tothe drawing, 1 indicates the tank, which has mounted thereon a whistle 2 of any conventional form, said whistle be ing in communication with the tank so that air under pressure will sound the whistle when the valve 3 carried thereby is open.
The pump barrel 4 is provided with threads 5, which are adapted to engage the threaded opening 6 formed in the head 7 of the tank, and since the threads 5 are formed at the outer end of the barrel 4, it is obvious that the barrel 4 will extend into the tank 1. The outer end of the barrel 4 is provided with a removable cap 8, and in which operates the rod 9 of the piston 10.
Specification oi Letters Patent. Patented Dec. 11, 1917. Application filed November 8, 1915.
Serial No. 60,456.
By mounting the barrel in this manner it is obvious that the same can be readily removed should it be necessary to repair the piston 10.
Supported in the tank by braces 11 is a cap 12, said cap having an threaded flange 13 which is adapted to en gage the inner threaded end of the barrel 4:. The cap 12 is provided with a neck 14 which supports the cylindrical valve casing 15, said valve casing having mounted therein a rubber disk 16, which is provided with a conical valve seat 17. r
Adjustably mounted in the valve casing 15 is a disk. 18, said disk having a squared socket 19 formed therein for engagement by a suitable tool so that said disk can be adjusted longitudinally of the casing, thereby regulating the longitudinal movement of the ball valve 20, which normally engages the seat 17. It will be obvious that when the piston 10 is moved inwardly that the valve 20 will be unseated, so that air compressed by the piston will enter the tank. Upon the internally outstroke of the piston 10, the valve 20 will I seat, thus preventing the air from escaping from the tank, and will remain seated until the piston is again moved inwardly.
Thus it will be seen that a tank has been provided so constructed that air under pressure can be retained therein, and used for sounding the whistle 2, when desired.
What I claim is:
In an apparatus of the class described, the combination of a tank, radially disposed braces interiorly of said tank and intermedi-, ate the ends thereof, a cap disposed at the inner ends of said braces and having a reduced neck thereof, a valve casing mounted upon said neck portion and having an outlet opening, a disk mounted in one end of said valve casing adjacent said neck portion and having a valve seat, a ball valve movable longitudinally in said valveecasing and normally engaging said valve seat to prevent the passage of air from the tank through said neck portion a second disk threaded interiorly of the other end of said valve casing and adjustable longitudinally thereof to limit the movement of said ball valve within saidjcasing, and a pump having one end mounted in said cap and communicating with said neck portion and extending longitudinally of the tank on the opposite side of said braces from said valve casing, the other end of said pump being mounted in the end of said tank.
In testimony whereof, I afiix my signature, in the presence of two Witnesses.
