Description

N. BAY. gfi-Gocks.
No. 134,098. Patented Dec. 17, 1872.
UNITED STATES PATENT QFFIGE NICHOLAS BAY, OF SGHENEOTADY, NEW YQRK.
IMPRCVEMENT IN GAGE-CQCKS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 134,098, dated December 17, 1872.
' To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, NIcHoLAs RAY, of Schenectady, in the county of Schenectady, and in the State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Gage- Gocks; and do hereby declare that the following is afull, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawing making a part of this specification, in which Figure 1 is a side elevation of my improved device; Fig. 2 is a central longitudinal section of the same; and Figs. 3 to 6 are side elevations of the different parts of said de- V vice before being combined.
Letters of like name and kind refer to like I parts in each of the figures.
The principal object of my invention is to enable access to be easily had to the interior of the barrel for the purpose of cleansing the same or for dressing the valve-seat; and it consists in the device as a whole, when its several parts are constructed and combined substantially as and for the purpose hereinafter specified.
In the annexed drawing, A represents the inner section of the barrel, provided upon its outer end with a threaded neck, A, which terminates at its inner end in a square shoulder, a. The outer section 13, having any desired exterior shape, is provided within its inner end with a threaded opening, which corresponds to and fits over the neck A of the inner section, said parts when thus connected having the usual form of a barrel of ordinary construction. The valve-seat a upon the end-of the section A is somewhat less in diameter than the contiguous portion of said end, and'at its center has an opening, 00, that, extending longitudinally through the center of said section, furnishes communication with the interior of the boiler. The outer portion of section B is provided with a threaded opening that receives a corresponding plug, 0, upon the inner end of which is secured a valve, D, that, when said plug is screwed inward,
impinges against the valve-seat a, and closes the opening through the same. In order that freedom of action may be secured to the valve, said part is provided with a stem, D, which fits into a corresponding opening in the end 'of the plug, and enables either of said parts to rotate independent of the other. It, now, the plug be screwed inward, the valve, when brought into contact with its seat, will remain stationary instead of revolving upon and abrading said seat. By making said valve of copper or other soft metal, greater durability of parts will be secured and a closer joint produced. A discharge-nozzle, E, extending radially outward from section B forward of the valve-seat, completes the device, which is used in the ordinary manner.
As thus constructed, it will be seen that by removing the outer section of the barrel the valve-seat is fully exposed, and, it required, can be easily dressed oft with a file, by which means great convenience is secured, and less time and expense rendered necessary in keeping the device in repair than is usually requisite.
It will be seen that this improvement is equally applicable to any form of cock in which the valve screws down upon its seat, the principle involved being the same, whatever the exterior form of the device.
Having thus fully set forth the nature and merits of my invention, what I claim as new,
The hereinbeforc-described gage-coclqconsisting of the sections A and B and the plug 0, with or without the valve D and 1), when said parts are constructed and combined substantially as and for the purpose shown.
In testimony that I claim the'i foregoing I have hereunto set my hand this 1st day of November, 1872.
NICHOLAS RAY.
