To all w hom it may concern:

Be it known that 1, CARL E. SKooc, a c1t1- zenoftheUnited States, and a resident of Providence, in the county" of Providenceand State of Rhode Island, have invented a spring 18 having separable gripping ends new and Improved separable-Link Cufi- Button, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.

Among the principal objects which the present invention has in view are: To increase the service period of buttons of the character mentioned; to adapt a button of the character mentioned of one-piece 'construction to the needs of an auxiliary spring grip; and to avoid wear on garments with which buttons of the character mentioned are associated.

Figure l is a longitudinal section. of a tubular, centrally-perforated cup having loosely installed therein a retaining spring and a supporting perforated disk therefor;

Fig. 4 is a cross section on an enlarged scale, the section being taken as on the line' As seen in the drawings, cuff buttons when constructed and arranged in accordance with the present invention have a shank wherein the head 10, flange 11, and throat 12 are constructed from the same piece of metal. The single piece of metal referred to is shown in Fig. 1 of the drawings, where the metal is shaped to form a cylindrical cup 13, the bottom of which is partially closed by the dome 14. At any stage in the proceedings offorming the metal to the shape as shown inFig. 1, a central opening 15 is made in the dome 14. To hold the nib 16 in service a circular 19 is disposed in the bottom of the'cup 13, as shown best in. Fig. 1 0f the drawings. To hold the spring 18, a disk 20 is also deposited in the cup 13 above the sprin 18. The disk 20, as shown best in Fig. 2 o the drawings is provided with a perforation 21 centrally disposed therein also capable of passing the nib 16. 7

After the spring 18 and disk 20 have been disposed as described in the cup 13, the throat 12 is formed by contracting the sides of the cup 13, while pressin the dome 14:. and flange 11 toward each ot er. This operation is continued until the female member of the link button is shaped in cross section as shown in Fig. 3 of the drawings, where it will be noted that the disk 20 is held firmly between the contracted annular edge of the head 10 of the female member.

The male member of the link button has a base flange 11, neck portion 12, and head 17 shaped in the same manner as the flange 11, throat 12, and head 10 of the female.

member. Instead of the opening 15, the head 17 has the throated protected nib 16. The nib 16 has a contracted throat 22,which is engaged in service by the gripping'ends 19 of the spring 18. The sides of the throat 22 are so shaped that the nib 16 is pressed through and withdrawn from between the gripping ends 19 of the spring18. When pressedthrough said ends 19, they operate tov hold the nib 16 in position, where the edge of the hole 15 bears lightly on the adjacent surface of the head17.

In the modified form shown in Fig. 6 of the drawings, a wire spring having a how 23 is so folded as to have parallel extensions 24 which engage upon the area of the openings 15 in the head 10 and disk 20.
