Description
C. A. SCHEL LENS &'G. W. PENTHENY.
CENTRIFUGAL COMPRESSOR. APPLICATION FILED mus. I911.

////////////////l J l W I l I STATE earners? erases.
OF NEW YORK.
I To all whom it may concern:
Be' it known that we, CHRISTOPHER A. SQHELLENS and GEORGE PENTHENY, c1t1 zens of the United States, residing, respectively, at Marblehead, in the county of Essex,
State of Massachusetts, and at Lynn,
1 in the county of Essex, State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Y Centrifugal Compressors, of which the following is a specification.
The present invention relates to centrif ugal compressors, such as aredesigned for compressing air or other gases, or fluids,
and which comprise one or more impellers located Within a casing, which impeller or impellers receive-the fluid to be pumped on one or both sides and deliver it at the periphery.
The invention relates particularly to comp'ressors having an impeller or'impellers of the so-termed cast-in type, such an impeller comprising a plurality of suitably shaped blades around which a metal, as steel, is cast to form the hub portion and web portion of the impeller, the inner ends of the blades beingem'bedded in the cast metal to anchor them against the centrifugal stresses which are set up when the impeller rotates.
In order to reduce the centrifugal stresses in the impeller, and particularly those occurring at the hub of the impeller near the bore, it is desirable to lighten the impeller as much as possible, and particularly the peripheral portion thereof where the added weight of any additional metal greatly increases the centrifugal stresses in the hub,
.as is obvious. At the same time, it is necsary strength and the required stiffness of the blades will be comparatively light, particularly at its periphery.
For a consideration of what we believe to Specification of Letters Patent. A
CHRISTOPHER A. SCHELLEN S, OF MARBLEHEAD, AND GEORGE W. PENTHENY, 0F LYNN,
MASSACHUSETTS, ASSIGNORS TO GENERAL ELECTRIC COMPANY, A CORPORATION CENTBIFUGAL 'comraassoa.
be novel and our invention, attention is dithe accompanying rected to specification and the claims appended thereto.
In the accompanying drawing wherein an embodiment of the invention, is illus- "trated, Figure 1 is an endview of a comcates the shaft of the compressor u'pon'which view taken at right an- I Patented Dec, 151, 1917. Application filed 'Januarymi, 1911". Serial No. 145,086.
resso'r having a'n-inlet conduit 6 anda discharge condult 7.1 8 1nd1- is mounted the impeller, or the impellers in the case of a multistage compressor. The.
impeller comprises the-b ades 9, the hub 10, and the .web .11, the hub having) bore to receive the shaft 8. The lades com-' a suitable prise flat radially extending plates having curved extensions which form entrance buck ets 12 whichextend across the outer surface of the hub and act, as is well understood", to
catch the incoming fluid and direct it evenlyand smoothly to the spaces between the blades.
to the outer ends of the blades radially extending flanges or ribs 13 are provided on the-blades. Preferably a single centrally located flange or rib 13 is provided on the rear side of each blade 9, the same extendmg from the periphery thereof and having its inner end embedded in the material of the web 11. It is to be understood that by the inner ends of the blades 11 and ribs or The hub-10 and web 11 are cast. around the inner ends of the blades to an v hub and web east about the inner ends thereblades and having their inner ends emof, said web terminating some distance short bedded in the Web. of the outer ends of the blades, and radial In witness whereof, We have hereunto set 10 flanges formed integral with the blades on our hands this 26th day of January, 1917.
5 the rear sides thereof and at right angles to the plane of the blades said flanges being CHRISTOPHER A. SCHELLENS. located on the longitudinal axes of the GEORGE W. PENTHENY.
