To all whom it may concern: Be it known that ll, HARRY RANDoLrH VAN DEVENTER, a citizen of lthe United States oit America, residing at Sumter, in the county oi' Sumterv and State of South Carolina, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Generating and.
Lighting Devices, of which the following is a specification.
This'invention relates to generating and lighting devices for use with bicycles, automobiles and other vehicles.\
The objects oit the linvention are to provide a unitary .structure comprising a dynamo and a lamp adapted to be mounted on a vehicle and driven by a moving part,"such as a wheel, thereof; to provide a structure in which the lamp iscarried bythe moving ypart of the dynamo, and the latter is driven by a moving part of a vehicle; and to provide a support for said structure including resilient means for holding the same in driving relation to th-e vehicle wheel or other moving part. l
These and other objects of the invention are attained by the arrangement Vand combination of parts hereinafter more fully described and pointed out in the appended claims. i i

ln the arrangement shown in the drawings, the dynamo or generator comprises' a plurality of permanent magnets 1, punched from, sheet stock into the ring-shaped :torm shown in Fig. 2 and assembled into a group, as in Fig. 1, each magnet having poles hl and S. ASecured Ito the. magnetlgro'up by screws or the like 2, shown in Fig. 2, are nonmagnetic end plates 3 and 4, these plates together with the magnet group forming an inclosing chamber or casing.
Within this chamber or casing, is located an armature structure comprising an iron armature 5, carrying a generating or winding coil 6, and non-magnetic heads 7 and 8 secured. to the armature by screws or the like 9, Fig. .2. Riveted or otherwise secured to Specification ot' Letters atent.

the heads 7 and 8 are shafts 10 and 11, which pass-through bearings in the end plates 3 and d respectively. The shaft 104 carries a. drlve wheel 10a adapted to trictionally engage the tire 12 of the vehicle wheel whereby the armature structure is rotated as the wheel revolves. its upper end to receive the lamp 14.

The end plates 3 and l `are provided with extensions 21 and 22 which are secured by bolts 23 to a barrel 24, the latter having an arm 251tormed at its rear end as part ol thee usual form of clamp secured by the bolts 26 to the .front bar or vtube 27`ot the bicycle frame. 'llhe barrel 2l is hollowed at its upper and lower ends and receives sprin s 1 28, which are connected to the barrel at thelr inner ends and to the extensions 21 and 22 at their outer ends. "lhe springs 28 are so arranged as to lhold the drive wheel 10 in driving contact with the tire 12.

By mounting the lamp on the moving part ot ythe dynamo and in direct contact with the terminal of the generating coil, sliding contactsor brushes, connectingwires and the like are entirely avoided. All of the parts parts shown, which v'may be widely varied within the scope of the appended claims.
I claim 1. A generator lamp comprising a casing, a refiector mounted on said casing, a dynamo r having a rotatable part carrying a generating coil located in said casing and extending at one end into said reflector, a driving n wheel attached to the other end of the rotating part and adapted to engage a rotating .part of the vehlcle, said rotatable part of the dynamo being disposed in a plane at 4right angles to the plane of the rotating part of the vehicle and a lamp disposed in said reflector and carried by said rotatable part and having connection with the generating coil.
2. A generator lamp comprising a dynamo having a rotatable part, a generating coil mounted on said rotatable part, a driving wheel connected to one end of said rotatable part, a lamp mounted on the other end of said rotatable part to rotate therewith, and having connection with the generating coil, and a magnet disposed in a plane at right angles to the axis of rotation of said rotatable part. y

4. A generator lamp comprising Aa dynamo having a movable part mounted to rotate about a vertical axis, a generating coil carried by said movable part, sheet metal ring magnets located in a horizontal plane and surrounding said generating coil, a driving wheel connected at the lower end of said movable part and adapted to engage the rotating part of a moving vehicle, and a lamp mounted on the upper end of said rotating part to rotate therewith, said lamp having connection with the generating coil.
5. A generator lamp comprising a dynamo having a movable part mounted to rotate about a vertical axis, a generating coil carried by said movable part, magnets Alocated in a horizontal plane and Isurrounding said generating coil, a driving wheel connected at the lower end of said movable vnamo having a rotary part and adapted to engage the rotating part of a moving vehicle, and a lamp mounted on the upper end of said rotating part lto rotate therewith, said lamp having connection with the generating coll, and a housing inclosing the dynamo and the lamp, said housing including a vertically disposed reflector for the lamp.
6. A generator lamp comprising a dynamo having horizontally disposed magnets, an armature mounted to rotate about a vertical axis within said magnets, said dynamo having end plates secured to the magnets and projecting rearwardly therebeyond for formlng an attaching means for securing A the dynamo to a vehicle, a driving wheel secured to the lower end of the armature shaftl and adapted toy engage a rotating part of the vehicle, a lamp fixed to the upper end of said armature shaft to rotate therewith and having connection with the generating coil of the armature, a support carried by the upper end plate, and a' vertically disposed reflector mounted on said support and having an opening in its lower side through which the armature shaft projects, whereby the lamp may be disposed vertically wlthin the refiector.
7. A generator lamp comprising a dygenerating coil provided with a vertical shaft having a drive wheel on its lower end, a suitable casing for the generator, a vertically disposed refiector on top of the casing, the upper end of the rotaryshaft extending up through the casing into the lower rear part of the reflector and provided with a lamp socket in its upper end, a conductor extending through the shaft, connected at its lower end to the coil winding and extending at its upper end into the lamp socket, and a lamp mounted in said socket with its terminal engaging said upper end of the conductor.
8. A generator lamp comprising horizontal ring magnets, a vertical shaft having a generating coil within the magnets, an operating wheel on the lower end of the shaft, a lamp on the upper end of the shaft to turn therewith and connected to the said coil, top and bottom plates secured together and inclosing the magnets, said plates having rearward extensions, a supporting arm having an attaching device and provided with a vertically sleeved portion extending between said rearward extensions, a bolt extending through the sleeve and the said extensions, and a spring on the bolt within said sleeve and engaging the sleeve and said extensions to hold the wheel against a rotary actuating means.
