IMPROVEMENT lN-COMPOSITIONS FOR COLORING LEATHER.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 124,965, dated March 26, 1872.
Specification describing a new and usefiul Improvement in Composition for Leather, invented by LEWIS 0. MAY, of Oochitua-te, in the county of Middlesex and State of Massachusetts.
This invention relates to a compound to be applied to leather in the manufacture of boots and shoes, and for leather used for other purposes, for changing the color or complexion'of the leather, designed more especially for changing the color of the soles or bottoms of boots and shoes, but not confined thereto; and it consists in a compound composed of the ingredi-' ents hereinafter named, combined in about the proportions and in about the manner specified.

This composition fills the pores and makes the leather bright and hard. By the use of a revolving brush, or friction; applied otherwise after the application of the composition, the complexion or color of the leather may be changed, as desired. The bottom of a boot or shoe or other leather may be made of a very light color, or of a dark red or other complexion or shade. This color, whichever it may be, will not fade, but improves the wear or durability of the leather.
I do.n0t confine myself to the exact proportions named of the difl'erent ingredients, as they may be varied without departing from my invention.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- The composition above described, substanstantially as and for the purposes herein set forth.
