1 Application filed ma 7,1917. serialivo. 166,852.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HARRY Serif, a citizen of the United States,,and resident of improvements in toys andpartieularly we toy of the type in which a drum or pulley is employed adapted to travel up a cord, the pulley being colored, as for instance, red, white, and blue, in such a manner as to give a pleasing appearance to the eye when being,
a i 1 i thecoil 13, and also having its end 21 secured in the drum, is a lighter cord or wire manipulated.
The primary object of my invention 1s to provide a simple toy which will be highly amusing to both young and old, which may be used as a patriotic toy, or which may be used for the purpose of advertising.
A further object of my invention is the provision of a toy of the character described which will be of extremely simple construction, and will therefore be manufactured at an extremely low cost.
With the above and other objects in view, which will appear as the description pro ceeds, my invention resides in the novel construction, arrangement and combination of parts substantially as herein described and more particularly defined by the appended claims, it of course beingunderstood that such changes may be made in the precise embodiment of the invention herein disclosed as will come within the scope of the claims.
In the accompanying drawings T have illustrated one complete example of the physical embodiment of my invention constructed according to the bestmode T have so far devised for the practical application of the principles of my invention.
Figure 1 is a side view in elevation of my toy, and
Fig. 2 is a view in elevatlon lookmg 1n the direction indicated by arrows 2-2 in Fig. 1.
My invention comprises essentlally an exteriorly screw threaded or grooved drum or pulley 5 which has extending therein from side to side the three spaced apertures 6 and has extending centrally therethrough a metal or other bushing 7 forming the bearing for the pulley on the pivot 8 which has extending laterally therefrom in oppos1te directions the arms 9 and 10 having the r inwardly bent as at 11 and 1 2 to be parallel with the pivot 8. The, ends of the arms 11' and 12 are coiled as at 18 and 14 respec: tively, the open ngs of which coils are in approximate alinement. Extending out from the coil 14 is the extension 16 adapted Specification of Letters Patent. Patented D430, 11,1917,
to receive a flag or suitable advertisement 1 17, and formed on the coil 13 is the. hook 18 1 adapted to receive any desired attachment,
the extension 16 having its flag extending centrally over. the drum.-
Secured to the drum is the end 19 ofa wire or cord 20 which is wound several,
times around the drum 'extending downwardly and through the opening formed in 22 which is wound several times around the drum in a direction opposite to that of the cord 20 and passes up through the opening formed in the coil 14.
The drum 5 is divided into an inner, intermediate and outer colored and 25 "being blue, white, and a bright red respectively, the colors making a pleasing display when the drum is caused to ascend or descend as it will be apparent.
Having thus described my invention in as clear and precise a manner as possible, I will now endeavor to set forth its operation which is as follows:
The upper lighter cord may be secured to any suitable support or held in one hand, and the lower heavier cord is held in the other hand and when stress is applied the drum will ascend up the lighter cord and when the stress is released it will descend. This being accomplished by the lighter cord sinking deeper into the groove than the heavier cord thereby having less leverage than the heavier cord, and thus causing the drum, as aforesaid, to travel up the lighter cord as will be apparent to those skilled in the art to which an invention of this character appertains.
I claim:
1. A toy of the characterdescribed comprising an exteriorly screw threaded drum of the same diameter throughout, a pivot therefor, a light and heavy cord oppositely wound on the drum, and guiding means carried by the pivot and engaging the cords.
2. A toy of the character described com prising a pivot member having arms laterally extending therefrom in opposite diportions 23, 2 1,
openings in their outer ends, an exteriorly screw threaded drum mounted on the pivot and of the same diameter throughout, and" means engaging the grooves of the drum and passing through the openings in the arms of the p iVot member to cause said drum to ascend and descend Substantially as described.
3 A toyof the character described com- 29 prisinga drunna pivot forthe' drum, lat-- eral arms formed on saidpivot and extend inyi opposite directions, a; light andfa heavy cord having their inner ends secured to the drum and partially Wound therearou'ndin' op'p'osit'di'rections, the outer ends ofthe cords slidably engaging the ends of said lateral arms, and a display flag carried by. one-of said arms, said drum having a series of apertures therein and having its sides paintedfto 'represent the colors of an American flag substantially as described.
5. A device of thecharacter describech comprisingadrum, pivot for the drum alight cord Wound on'the drum, a heavy cord' wound on the drum opposite to the light cord, guides for'the cordsand carried by said pi'vot,- said drum being adapted to travel up the light cord when stress is appliedto the cords, substantially aS described.
In testii'nonythat I claim the foregoing 1 have hereuntoset 'myhand' at Milwaukee, in thecounty of Milwaukee and State of Wisconsin.
