Referring to the drawing, 1, 2 indicate Standards, to the upper portions of the opposing faces of which are connected, by screws 3, the ends of a bar 4. From said upper portions and bar extend on each side circularly curved arms 6, 7, which are riveted. as shown at 8, to a stationary'semi-cylindrical press section 9, to one longitudinal upper edge of which is hinged, as shown at 11, a movable semi-cylindrical press section 12. Near the other longitudinal edge of said movable section are hinged catches 13, here shown as three in number, having `slots 14, through which can pass the free ends of curved bars 16. hinged, as shown at 17, to the bar 4, and all connected with each other, so as to swing together, by a longitudinal rod 18. Each bar is formed on its outer edge near its free end with a series of hooks or teeth 19, adapted to engage the outer end of the slot 14 through which the bar passes. It will be seen that, by turning the handle 44, the follower is advanced within the press but does not turn on account of its eccentric form.
Between two legs 46 of the standard 2 is located a spool 47 of twine, carried by a' pin 48 supported in bearings in the legs 46.
provide followers of different sizes, numbered, as shown at 49, and the hooks or teeth 19 are also numbered correspondingly, as shown at 51, so that the operator knows that when a follower having a certain number, as, for instance, number 5, is placed in the press, it is then necessary to press down the movable press section until the slotted catches 13 engage the teeth numbered 5.
The device is used in the following manner: The head 23 being dropped to a horizontal position, and the tie rod 28 being removed, the hinged press section is raised and the boned ham or other joint of meat is Vdropped into the stationary press section. The hinged press section is then dropped into position` the hooks 19 engaging the slots 14 in the catches 13, and pressure is applied to the handles 21 to compress the joint as much as possible, the catches 13 being engaged by lower hooks 19. Then the heads are tied together by means of the tie rod 28. The gear wheel 42 is then rotated until the joint is compressed between the head 23 and the follower 38. The head 23 is now dropped again into a horizontal position, and the joint is pressed by means of the follower through the open and of the press.
