AGRICULTURAL TOOL.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Dec. a, ram.
Application filed August 11, 1916. Serial No. 114,893.
It is one of the objects of my invention to provide strengthening means between the neck and body portions of the tool for distributing the stress upon the body-portion over a large portion of its area, accomplished by providing the body-portionwith a reinforcing depression adjacent to the neck-portion and extending lengthwise of the bodyportion; further to connect the upper wall of said reinforcing depression of the body portion with the neck-portion by means of reinforcing bent-over edge-portions of the metal; and, further, to form the socket-portion preferably tapering with the formed-up wings thereof overlapping each other and rigidly secured together attheir edges.
The invention will be further readily understood from the following description and claims, and from the drawing, in which latter: V
Figure 1 is a plan view of a blank of sheet metal for forming the hoe.
Fig. 2 is a plan view of the same in partly formed relation.
Fig. 3 is a perspective front elevation of a formed hoe. 1 t
Fig. l is an edge elevation of the'same, with a handle secured in the socket-portion, the handle being partly broken away.
Fig. 5 is a cross-section of the hoe, taken on the line 55 of Fig. 4, partly broken away. h r h Fig. 6 is a horizontal cross-sectioh of the same, taken on the line 6-6 of Fig. 4.
Fig. 7 is a vertical cross-section of the same, taken on the line 7-7 of Fig. 3.
Fig. 8 is a rear view of-the formed hoe.
Fig. 9 is a plan view of a blank of sheet metal for forming a rake.
Fig. 10 is a front perspective view of the formed rake; and, h h
Fig. 11 is a cross-section of the same on the line 11 11 of Fig. 10; f
The blank 11 of sheet metal forforming the hoe comprises a body-part 12, wings 13,
of the wings. 1 wing 13 and is provided with off set edges 18, 19. The upper edge of the blank between 1 1-, and a connecting-part 15, slots 16, 17, being located between said respective wings and the body-part. 1
The wings taper inwardly, the outer ends of the wings being wider than the inner ends The wing 14 is wider than the the wings is preferably formed with a comparatively shallow incision 20 for the purpose hereinafter to be described.
In the first operation for forming up the hoe, the body-part of the blank is provided with a forwardly pressed depression 25 for "forming the body-portion 26 of the hoe, the
depression 25 being a reinforcing depression extending lengthwise of the width of the hoe to a greater extent than the width of the neck-portion 27 and of the socket-portion 28 of the completed hoe, in order to distribute the stress from the socket-portion through the neck-portion over a wide area of the body-portion of the hoe.
The connecting-part 15 is at the same operation provided with a reinforcing depression 29 which extends up and down across the neck-portion of the hoe when completed, and merges into the reinforcing depression 25 of the'body-portion of the hoe and extends upwardly within the lower end of the bottom wall 30 of the socketof the socketportion of the hoe. At the first operation,
preferably also, the wings 13,14, are bent forwardly and preferably slantingly edgewise toward the front face of the hoe, as shown in Fig. 2.
i The wings are then formed curvingly, with opposite edges of the wlngs presented toward each other in overlapping arrangement, as exemplified in Fig. 3, the offset edges 18, 19, being connected with the body of the wing 1 1 by means of outward bends 31, for causing said offset edges to be re ceived outside the coacting edges of the wing 13, so that said offset edges shall lap the edges of the coacting wing for forming a socket, the inner face of which is round in cross section, the socket being a tapering socket, due to the tapering form of the wings. The overlapping edges of the wings are rigidly connectedtogether, as by suit- It will be noted from the blank shown in Fig. 1, that the connecting-"part 15 of the blank is comparatively wide. and of substantially greater width than the neck-portion 27 of the hoe after its formation. This extra metal enables me to provide lateral edge-portions 36 extendin integrally from the respective sides of the neck, and upper edge-portions 37 extending integrally from the upper edge'of the bodyportion, which are respectively bent backwardly upon the body-part of the neckportion, with a reverse bend 38, and upon the upper wall 39 of the reinforcing depression 25 of the body-portion, with a reverse bend 40, the upper ends of said lateral edge-portions 36 meeting and merging into the forward part of the bottom of the socket-portion, as. shown at ll in Fig. 3, whereby a lapped-over reinforcing edge extends from each side of the socket-portion across the neck-portion and laterally along the upper wall of the reinforcing depression 25 of the body-portion 26 of the device, whereby the strain from the handle of the hoe is distributed over a large area of the body-portion, the stress being received by the formed depressed part of the, bodyportion and distributed over said body-.p0r-
7 tion.
The tool end of the handle 45 is formed tapering, as shown at $6, in Fig. 4, for being received in the tapering socket, wherein it is secured, as by suitable brads 4:7 rereceived through suitable holes in the wall of the socket-portion into the handle. 7
In Figs. 9, 10 and 11, I have illustrated my invention as applied to a rake, in which similar parts are shown by similar but primed reference numerals. The reinforcing depression 25 extends lengthwise along the upper bar 51 of the rake, to substantially the end walls 52 of the upper bar, the teeth being shown as formed up out of the sheet metal blank by providing the teeth with lengthwise reinforcing depressions 53, extending up and down, the upper ends of which merge into said cross depression 25.
The application of my invention to other agricultural tools than those herein specifically shown and described will be readily seen, and the claims are intended to apply generally to said tools.
Having thus fully described my'invention, whatI claim as new-and desire to secureby Letters Patent, is:
*1. A tool of the character 7 described "formed out of sheet metal, comprising a body-portion, a socket-portion, and an intermediate neck-portion, said socket-portion comprising tapering wings tapering toward each other and the edges of which overlap and are welded together, and said sheet metal provided with reinforcing edges laid over upon said neck-portion and body-porlayers.
