Speccationof Letters Patent.
Patented Dec. 4t, 1917.
Application filed lTune 30, 1917. Seriell No. 177,897.
' To a, "".ftom it may Concern.'
Be it known that I, JosnrH G. HUYE, a citizen of the United States, residing at New Orleans, in the parish of Orleans and State of Louisiana` have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Boxes, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to collapsible setup boxes, more particularly to paste-board hat-boxes, candy-boxes and similar receptacles and may be made in any desired form, it being understood of course that the outline, of the top and bottom or end portions shall correspond to the Across-sectional forni of the body. 1
The primary object of this invention is to improve the locking m'eans for sectional collapsible set-up boxes consisting of two or more sections, two of which may be easily and securely locked together in accordance herewith. Other objects are to simplify such boxes, reduce their cost of manufacture and increase their durability.
In the accompanying drawings:
Figure 1 represents a perspective view of a box, of octagonal form, in which my invention is embodied, the upper and lower portions being partially broken away;
Fig. 2, a top plan view of the same, with the cover removed;
F ig. 3, a superposed perspective view of portions of the body and the flange or lip 5 carrying the engaging elements;
Fig. 4, a fragmentary sectional view on the line 4-4 of Fig. 2, the wall of the body being broken away to show the inner face of the lip 5 in elevation;
Fig. 5, a sectional view at right angles thereto;
Fig. 6, a plan view of a modified form of cylindrical shape with the cover removed,
employing a single disk-shape stop glued toA the upper inner face of the end section and having its edge at an equal distance, at all points, from the inner face of' the lip 5, and having the lugs 7 glued thereto.
Fig. 7 a fragmentary sectional View on the line 7-7 of Fig. 6' and Fig. 8, an enlarged horizontal sectional view'through one of the lugs 11, of the modified form shown in Fig. 6, and the adjacent parts of the body and lip 5.
.Referring now in detail to the drawings, the box illustrated consists of three parts or sections, the top A havingthe usual flange or lip, the body sections 8 snugly tbending each pair of such stamped out parts, on their fourth and connected side, back against the adjacent face of-body 8, one outside of the other, and securing them in sueh position by any suitable method or means. such as the staples 9. The position of the lugs i' on the body 8 corresponds to the position of the holes G in the lip or flange 5, so that when the body 8 is slightly deformed and has its lower end ortion inserted into the lip 5 of end -l'its ugs 7 will enter the corresponding holes 6 in the lip 5 and the edges of the lugs 7 and the wallsI of the respective holes 6 will engage and prevent any movement of the parts 4, 5 and 8 with relation to cach other, except laterally inwardly or outwardly, so long-as the body 8 retains its normal Shape.
`When the parts 8 and 4 have been. assembled as above with the lugs 7 projecting into or through the respective opening 6,
the locking flanges 3, formed integral With body 8 and folded inwardly at right angles thereto on scored lines are snapped down to engage with their edges the outer faces of the corresponding stops 1.
These stops l are formed by stamping out from the bottom ladjaeent the lip 5 at an equal distance therefrom, and at equal distances around said bottom. Each of these stamped outv parts is folded once on itself, then folded on its side connected to the bottom 4- and secured thereto by a staple 9 or any other suitable method or means. The openings thus formed will be closed by the locking flanges 3 when the parts are assembled. The width ofthe flange 3 will be slightly greater than the distance from the outer face of each stop 2 to the adjacent portion of the inner face of the lip 5 to force the lower portion of the body 8 firmly outwardly thereagainst to hold the lugs 7 in the hles 6 and prevent their escape therefrom.
ln the modified form a single stop 10,
this fiange or lip with its upper eol disk-shape for thecy'lindrical shape box shown, having'its outer edge at an equal distance from the lip 5 at all points, is substituted for the stops 1, being glued to the upper inner face of the bottom 4, or may be secured immovably thereto in any suitable mann'er.
Also, in this form separate lugs 11 glued to the outer face of body 8, or otherwise immovably secured thereto, are substituted for the lugs 7 above described.
In this form the body 8 and the bottom 4 are imperforate, though of course the lip 5 will need to be provided with the perforations 6 to receive said lugs, the same as in the preferred form.
The disk stop 10 and the lugs l1 will be made preferably of loose rolled paper board about twice as thick as the material used 'for the body 8. 0f course the disk 10 will also vserve to reinforce the bottom 4, making it thicker and stiffer.
, body section andadapted to engage said Any suitable fibrous or metallic material may be used throughout or wherever desired.
Having described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to claim by Letters Patent is:
1. A box comprising a body section and an end section, said sections being provided with interengaging means, the end section receiving the end portion of the body secsaid end section and immovable with rela.
tion thereto, and means integral with said body section and adapted to engage said stop to force the adjacent portion of the body section outward against said lip.
4. A box comprising a body section and an end section, said sections having interengaging means and the end section having a lip, in combination with an integral stop carried by said end section and immovable with relation thereto, and means carjied by said body section and adapted to lmgage said stop to force the adjacent portion of the body section outward against said lip.
A box comprising a body section and an end section, said sections having interengaging means and the end section having a lip, in combination with an integral stop carried bysaid end section and immovable with relation thereto, and means integral with said body section and adapted to cngage said stop to force the adjacent portion of the body section outward ag inst said lip.
(i. A box comprising a bod) section provided with integral lugs and an end section provided with a` lip having holes to receive vstop and the inner face of said lip.
tion and having a lip, in combination with said lugs and which snugly receives the end a stili' inwardly presented part carried by portion of said body section, in combinasaid body section and a stop held immovtion with a stop integral with said end secably to the inner face of said end section, tion and held immovably thereto and means the distance from between the outer and inintegral with said body section adapted to ner faces of said part being greater than'/engage said stops to force said body section the distance between the outer face of said outward against said lipl to hold said lugs in said holes. y 2. A box comprising a body section and 7. A boX endsection fixed in form and an end section, Said sections having interhaving integral stops immovably secured engaging means, and the end section having thereto and provided with a lip. a lip, in combination with :t stop carried ln 'testimony whereof, .I have signed my by said end lsection and immovable with rename to this specification. l lation therenV and means carried by said JOSEPH G. HUYE.
