grally formed being notched or cut away.
at the corners, and in which the flange of the cover is formed by a right angle fold. and also notched at the corners.
In the improvedconstruction embodying lny invention, the upright meeting edges of the integral sides and ends of the ox body are united by an internal lock seam, flush with the outer face of the upright ,ends of the body, and the body is furnished with slightly rounded corners. and the flange of the cover is notched for only a portion of its depth, preferably about half its depth, and the flange of the, coveris a combined drawn and folded flange, the corners of the, cover being slightly rounded to enable the cover flange to be drawn at the corners without breaking or injuring the stock and the rounded formation of the box bh dy at the corners effecting a snug, tight fit with the rounded corner cover. The; partially drawn construction of the cover flange at the corners adds materially to the strength and durability of the cover and the perfection of the closure eifected'thereby, and also produces a much smoother, neater and better appearing box. v
My invention also consists in tnc novel construction of parts and devices andin the novel combinations of parts and devices herein shown and described, and more pan ticularlyspecified in the claims.
In the accompanying drawing forming a part of this specification, Figure 1 is a perspective View of a sheet metalbox embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is a plan yiew of blank from which theboxbody and bottom are formed and Fig.v 7 is a detail View of the blank from which the cover is'formed. Flo's. 8 to 16 show modifications. 4
In the drawing, A represents the box body, the same having an integral bottom a, integral upright sides a? and integral upright ends (1 vthe meeting edges of the sides and ends being united at the corners bv internal locl' sea-ms (1- which are formed flush with the outer face of the upright ends (1 At the corners, the box body is furnished with slightly rounded corner walls a to. adapt the same to form a snug, tight fit with the drawn and rounded portion of the cover flange at the corners of the cover.-
The blank A from which the box body is formed has cut away portions A" at the corners to enable the upright sides and ends to be folded or turned at right angles to the box bottom.
The sheet metal cover B is provided with a marginal depending combined drawn and folded flange b. the drawn portion of the fla'nge b at the corners being rounded and extending to about half the depth of the flange and the interl-nediate. portion of the cover flange between the corners being formed by turning or folding the same at right angles to the face or plane of the cover. The cover flange at the corners is furnished with curved notches If which extend. preferably slightly more than half the depth of the flange. thus partially separating the side portion If from the end portion [1 (f the (t rel-flange. The rounded. drawn PatentedSept. 9; 1913.
corner portion 7) of the cover flange intw grally unites the end portions and side portions of the cover flange at the corners and thus securely binds the side portions and end portions together. and effectually pro,
vents any tendency of either the side or end portions of the cover flange from spreadingor flaring outward as is the case where the cover flange 1S notched at the corners to its entire depth.
My improved construction of folded box- Fig. 9 a rear PlPHVH ll and i section on line l lo of the c n struction is the same a? ;ll t tl ll Il and shown in Figs. l to T, with; lfhill forthrifeatures added. the cover h ll; hinged and Provided with a catch to hold it l aw'l. and the body being provided with lioi'lmnital convex or outwardly projecting heads n" at its sides and ends terminating a little lto1t of the cornetx-. so that the heads will not interfere with the lock seaming of the sides and end together at the corners. "he convexly curved beads a serve to atitlen the .side.\ and ends of the box body and also as stops for the flange of the cover to sllttt down against. At; shown in Fig.5. 5 to 10, the back side of the body is ftlllllSllBd with a concave or inivardly projecting head a at its central or middle portion. weparated by \lits a from the two terminal convex portions 1/ of the head to receive the pin or pintlc C of the hinge, and form an eye to hold it in position on the box body. The hinged pintle C is prevente front slipping endwise by the shoulder 1/," formed by the outer ends of the convex portions (1 of the head. The concave central portion u" of the head on the back side of the body ia enlarg d at its middle part II" to receive and at-t-onnnodate the hinge eye on the hack portion of the flange of the cover. this hinge eye being formed by providing said back flange ot' the cover with an integral i rojecting tab and curling it into a roll or cylindrical 01111 to embrace the central portion ol' the hinge pintle C. The interengaging t'at't'luw a and b on the box body and cover t': 1 ho ding the cover closed at" preferably integral horizontal lugs (-1" short beads stamped in the fr nt side of the box body near the middle and upper edge thereof and in the front portion of the cover flange. To further stiffen the cover and the box as a whole and intprove its a 'ipearance, the cover a\ shotvn iti Figs. 8 to 10 is provided with an upwardly or outwardly projecting panel 71''.
In the modification illustrated in Fig. 11, which is a cross sectional view. the con: truction is the same as in Figs. to ti above described. excepting that the body of the box is provided with a neck pl in ttpr" portion n forming a horizontal should i it? lot the cover to shut do n again t.
in the modification illu trated in Figs. 12
to 1 3. (the former being a rear elevation.
and the latter a cross section on linw sh ll of Fig. 12.) the construction is Similar to that li -Tor dwt-rihed. excepting that the hinge eye on th body of the box instead of bein .t'orn etl ii'itev'ral with the ba k side of of the bacl; side f the the box is made of a pair of SFPEIWIIH l t; ea h having an eye portion on il the p ntle of the hinge and end potitnei'ted through slote. in the ile of the box body and turned in po ite t'lirections tlat agaiint the insi ile l ilZ:
in the modification illu trated in Fig. ll. which is a cross sectional view. the rover instead of having an upwardly projecting panel has a downwardly or inwardly pro jetting panel I), and the upright sides and ends of the box body are provided with intcgral internal fOlda' a at their upper edge: to .stiti'en the sides and ends of the box and give it; a smooth edged rnottth.
In the modification illustrated in l ige'. 1:) and 16, the former of which is a cross sectional view, and the latter of which is a detail view of one of the separate piece hinge tabs in the flat. the (Ollal'l'llt'tlttll is the SI lllH. a5 ho\vn in Fig. 12 and 13, excepting that the separate piete hinge tab for connecting the hinged pintle with the box body is furniahed with two tongues or lips. the box body being provided with two slots for each hinge tab through which said tonguea are a portion of its depth. substantially as specitied.
3%. box covet having a flange notched to a portion of its depth at the corners. and provided with an integral dratvn portion above the notches at the ('(lllltl'n ol' the cover. blllibttllfliztlly as specified.
4. A box cover having a flange notched to a portion of its depth at the corners. and provided with an integral drawn portion above the notches at the corners of the cover. said tlratvn corner portion: of the cover flange being rounded. and the portions he tween the corner portions being tlat. sub- .-tantiall v as specified.
