present device being animprovement over the surfacing machine disclosed in my Patent No." 1,14;8, 199, granted August 3, 1915.
The present device is an attachment for a clicking machine for planing, levelingand smoothing the blocks thereof "upon which the material is cut by means of dies, which after continued useflcause the blocks to be-' come ragged and in some cases goug'ed out. In order to get the best results, it is very essential that the block of a clicking'machine be perfectly smooth" and; level, and it-is the object of the inv'ention'to provide a simple yet'eifectiveattachment for the" arm of a'clicking machine operable in asimple and eflicient manner for surfacing the block, and in a manner far SUPBIlOI'iZO ordinary means now used, such as along file leveling of a block is a laborious undertaking andmore or less'inefficient.
Another object, of the invention is the provision of a blockleveler which requires" but little power to operate, which is light and easy to applyand remove, being readily applied, from one clicking .niachine to another, and which will serve its 'o'fiice in a thoroughly practical, efficacious andsierviceable manner. arm or weight 4 and then liberating the same so that it will impinge with great forceupon the die (not shown) seatedupon the material disposed on the block 3, to causethe die to cut the material. As illustrated, the arm a is provided with lower outstanding flanges'or wings 5 arranged in a horizontal plane. and projecting in opposite directions, which flanges are employed for the application of the present attachment to the clicking machine.
The attachment comprises a body or cast-" ing ,7 adapted to be disposed atone side of the arm 1 parallel therewith, and having. a longitudinal slot, 8 opening at one side of thebody 7 for receiving one flange or wing 5, to apply the body 7 to the arm 4:. The
body 7 is provided with a rigid arm 9 extending at an angle therefromto lie underneath and: extend transversely across the lower surfaces of the flanges 5. The'end of the arm 9 has areduced stem 10 upon which a wing nut 11 is threaded, and a U- shaped attaching clip 12 straddle the edge of the flange 5 remote from the body 7, the upper l1mb113 of the clip 12 being secured upon said flange .5 by means of a screw 14; or other securing element, and the 28 of the motor projects lower limb 15 of the clip supporting the end of the arm 9. The stem 10 extends through the intermediate portion of the clip 12 and the nut 11 bears against said clip, whereby when the nut is tightened, the body 7 is drawn tightly into place tohold it firmly upon the respective flange?) of the arm 4:.- Thus, by means of the clip 12 and nutll, the arm 9 of the body 7 is connected to that flange 5 remote from the body, and the body is drawntightly into place.
The body 7 is providedgwith an upper longitudinal groove 16 of T-shaped cross section, and'said body isprovided'at that side remote from the arm 4 with a lower outstanding flange 17 provided with an upturned lip 18 forming a. groove 19 between said lip and the body. A slide .20 is disposed in-a ve'rtical;plane against that side of the body 7 opposite to the arm 4 and is provided at its upper'edge with a portion 21 overhanging the body and provided with a tongue 22 of-Tshaped section working within the groove 16. Thclower edge of the slide 20 has a tongue 23 working in the groove 19,'whereby the two tongues of the slide in engaging the body will guide the slide20 for; longitudinal movement of the body 7 parallel with and at one side ofithe arm 1. Theslide 20 is provided adjacent to its lower edge with an outstanding horizontal shelf 24: provided with a relatively wide groove 25 in which asupporting barv or bracket 26 issecured by means of bolts, screws, or other securing elements, the inner end of the bar 26 projecting from the shelf24. p 1
An electric motor 27 is secured upon the inner projecting end of the bar 26 with its armature vertical, and thearmature shaft downwardly through the bar 26 and has a collar 29 thereon below said bar. A cutter or planer 30is fitted upon the lower terminal of the shaft 28 and is. secured against the collar 29 by means of a nut 31 or.0ther retaining element engaged upon the lowerend of the shaft 28 and bearing upwardly against the cutter. The cutter 30 rotates in a horizontal plane above the block 3. The cutter 30 embodies a horizontal disk 31 having a central aperture 32 for receivingthe shaft 28, and provided with a plurality, in this case three, of rectangular apertures 33 in. which the shanks 34 of the cutter, bits are disposed, said shanks being'of rectangular cross section and fitting slidably' in said apertures 33. The shanks are clamped within said apertures by means of set screws 36 threaded intothe periphery of the disk 31,- and whensaid set screws are loosened, the cutter bits can be adjusted. Said bits require a minimum amount of power to actuate them. The bits 35 project downwardly from the disk 81 to engage the r mits of the vertical adjustmentof, the body 7 for adjusting the cutter likewise, in order that the cutter can be adjusted for shallower or deeper cuts at different portions of the block. 7 h

The cutter rotates about a. vertical axis whereby the cutter in being moved over thesurface of the board and rotating simultaneously, will provide an eflicientsurfacing cut-,l and-the cutter requires butminimum power-t0 oper-= ate it. . and can be readily takenfrom one machine 1 and applied toanother, and has other obvious advantages.-
