Located in this position the gear teeth are protected from accidental breakage and it is impossible for dirt to collect between the teeth as lwould be the case if the gear teeth were on the upper surface of the ring. A wedge-shaped plate 37 is arranged to slide on the inclined surface 36 ofthe vstandard' 33 its upper edge being in engagement with a pin 38 in the upper end of the bolt 34. Whenever desired a grasp on the operating rod 39 will move the plate 37 lengthwise permitting the bolt 34 to be forced downward into engagement with the teeth 31of the ring 18, thus securely locking the ring with the scraper blade at any'desired angle.

It will be observed that the bars 41, the plate 23, the brackets 28 and the brace-bar 29 to ether form an exceedingly rigid frame of suhstantially triangular form upon which the circleor Vring 18 carrying .the scraper blade isrotatably supported.

The effect of this manipulation of handwhecls upon the blade is conditional, however, depending` upon the lengthwise position of the lade relative to line of draft. If the blade be set square across the line of draft it is aifectedto the full extent of the movement of the cranks 45.. If'the position of the blade be at an angle less than ninety degrees from line of draft, ment of vcranks 45 is consumed in a transverse tilt of the blade and consequently lost for the purpose of raising and lowering the ends of the blade. If the position of the blade be parallel to the line of draft, or nearly so, movements of cranks 45 are en- Itirely or nearly used up in the transverse tilting of the blade, and the ends of same are not individually affected insofar as concerns raising or lowering.
The forward ends of the bars 41 constituting the part of the supporting frame for the ring or circle carrying the scraper blade converge and have secured to their forward end a segmental toothed rack 56, that is vertically arranged and -has its teeth in en. gagement with a pinion 57 on' a shaft 67. I also provide the converging draft bars 62 pivoted to the bars 41 and the plate 23 by the pivot 66. The forward ends of these bars converge and have arranged between them preferably a cast block 63 through which the king-bolt 6 passes. The bars 62 together with the block 63 form a V-shaped rame, the rear end of which is pivoted to the bars 41 and the plate 23 and the forward end of which is engaged by the kingbolt 6 upon which said frame pivots. This V-shaped frame formed by the draft bars 62 and block 63 may properly be designated a draft frame. The shaft 67 is mounted in bearings provided at the forward ends of the draft bars 62, and formed integrally with the pinion- 57 or suitably secured thereto is a'dworm gear 58, a worm- 59 is mounted in suitable bearings and is adapted to engage the worm gear 58. The worm 59 is coupled to an operating rod 60 having an operating wheel which is within convenient reach of the operator of the machine. worm gear is revolved the rack 56 will be tilting the bars 41 or causing the same to turn on the pivots Q66. It will be seen that the means for raising and lowering the forward end lof the frame that supports the ring 18 and scraper blade is supported upon and carried by the draft frame formed of the bars 62 and the block 63. l i
The draft pole is indicated at 64:, and the operating rod 65 for shifting the pole is shown mounted on a portion of'the frame. This shifting mechanism, however, forms the subject-matter of an application for Letters Patent filed by` me June 12, 1915, Serial No. 33,711. This mechanism, therefore, needs no further description herein.
ln the operation of the machine when the scraper blade is set at the usual angle of about 30 degrees with respect to the draft line, the forward end of the scraper may be raised or lowered for the purpose of causing` the end of the scraper blade to cut into a bank which it will do when the forward end of said blade is elevated, or to cut a ditch lwhich it will do when the forward end o ther blade is depressed. Any desired'amount of elevation or depression on the forward end of the scraper blade may be secured by the device herein described.

1. The combination, with a mainframe and forward and rear'wheeled axles upon which said frame is supported, of a longitudinally extending blade-supporting frame arranged beneath said main frame, hangers located at opposite sides of the machine and portin frame, a longitudinally extending draft frame havin its rear end pivoted to said blade-supporting frame near the longitudinal center thereof, means'pivotallyconnecting the forward end of said draft frame to the forward axle of the machine, and meansl upon said draft frame for raising and lowering the forward end o f said bladesubstantially as described.
2. rThe combination, with .a main frame and forward and rear wheeled axles -upon which said frame-is supported, of a'longitudinally extending triangular blade-'supportin frame arranged beneath said main frame, angers located at opposite sides of the.

4. The combination, with a -main frame and forward and rearl wheeled axles uponwhich said main frame is supported', of a longitudinali extending triangular bladesupporting rame arranged beneath said main frame, hangers located at ,o posite sides of the machine and carrying t e rear end of said blade-supporting frame, a -revoluble ring ysecured to said blade-supporting frame, a/scraper blade rigidly secured to said ring, a longitudinally extending draft frame arranged outside of said blade-supporting frame and having its rear -end pivoted thereto near the longitudinal center ward end of said draft frame to the forward `ax1e of the machine, and means upon said frame for raising and loweringthe forward end of said blade-supporting frame.
5.
