To all whom it may concern.
Be it known that 1, MICHAEL J. OSSMAN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Leadville, in the county of Lake and State of Colorado, have invented a new and useful Degree-Bevel-Scale Rule, of which the following is. a specification.
The device forming the subject matter of this application is a folding rule, and one object of the invention is to provide a rule of the kind above mentioned in which the graduations and various designating marks are so located that they will not be likely to be rubbed off or marred, after a protracted period of use.
Another object of the invention is to pro vide a folding rule which may be used for laying off angles.
It is within the province of the disclosure to improve generally and to enhance the utility of devices of that type to which the present invention appertains.
W'ith the above and other objects in view which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention resides in the combination and arrangement of parts and in the details of construction hereinafter described and claimed, it being understood that changes in the precise embodiment of the invention herein disclosed can be made within the scope of what is claimed, without departing from the spirit of the invention.

The rule forming the subject matter of this application comprises parts 1, 2, 3 and 4, the parts 1 and 2 upon the one hand, and the parts 3 and 4, on the other hand, being united by hinges 5. The parts 1 and 3 are supplied at their outer ends with coacting disks, the numeral 6 denoting the disk which is connected with the part 3. At 7 appears the pivot element whereby the disks are connected. The construction above described is the ordinary folding rule structure, and it need not be set forth in greater detail, since Specification fLettersIatentQ I Patented Dec. a, an.

Tn carrying out the present invention, the disk 6 is peripherally graduated, as shown at 8, the graduations 8 cooperating with the inner edge of the part 1, to indicate the angle between the inner edges of the parts 1 and 3. The graduations 8 may be of any desired sort, and it will be seen readily that when the parts 1 and 3 are separated to define an angle, the value of the angle may be read off on the graduations 8. v
The parts 1, 2, 3 and 4 of the rule preferably are made of aluminum and have graduations 9 of any desired sort. These graduations 9 preferably are made by grooving the parts 1, 2, 3 and 4, as at 25, and filling the grooves with an enamel 26 which difl'ers in color from the hue of the parts above specified.
On the ends of the parts 2 and 4 are placed caps 10 which preferably are made of steel, the caps being supplied with outwardly extended marking projections 11.
Each of the parts 1, 2, 3 and 4 of the rule is supplied with a longitudinal recess 12, and is provided with a longitudinal rib 14 which outstands at the base of the recess and defines grooves 15 on each side of the rib. The outer face 16 of the rib is spaced or set back from the outer face 17 of each part of the rule. Grooves or seats 18 are cut into the faces 16 of the rib 14, these seats being filled with enamel 19 and serve to form the numerals on the rule.
Because the other face 16 of the rib 14 is set back from the outer face 17 of the rule, the numerals formed in the seats 18 by the enamel 19 will not be marred when the rule is laid flat on an object. Further, since the grooves 15 are provided on each side of the rim 14, dirt and the like finding its way into the recess 12 will be caught in the grooves 15 and will not accumulate on the outer faces 16 of the ribs 14 and obscure the numerals formed in the seats 18 by the enamel 19.
