BOOK-MARKING DEVICE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed May 25, 1917. Serial No. 171,066.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, Anion SMITH, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at New York, in the county of Bronx and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Book- Marking Devices, of which the following is a full, clear, concise, and exact description.
This invention relates to book marking devices, and more particularly to such devices having one or more marking mem bers, each of which has an index projecting beyond the leaves of the book.
It is an object of this invention to provide a book marker of this character which is unitary, compact, simple, light, thin, rigid, durable, and easily and readily attachable to and detachable from the book to be marked, requiring no auxiliary or supplementarymember or members in holding it in place.
The book marker, in accordance with this invention, is substantially T-shaped, the stem of which bears an identifying character such as a letter or number, and the other limb (or base) at right angles to the stem and formed integrally therewith, has each end formed to engage the binding of the book to be marked.
A better understanding of this invention may be had from the following description considered in connection with the accompanying drawing, wherein,-
Figure 1 is a side view of a book showing several markers containing an embodiment of this invention attached to a book;
Fig. 2 is a view of several markers attached to a book showing how the markers are secured to the book binding;
Fig. 3 is a view of an open book showing clearly a marker in position; and
Fig. A is a plan of one of the book markers.
Referring now to the drawings, it will be seen from Fig. 4. that the book marker embodying this invention comprises a substantially IF-shaped device having a base 1, each end of which is curved to form a hook 2 adapted to engage the edge of the book binding, and having a second member or stem 3 attached to and extending at ri ht angles from the base member 1. To the free end of this stem member 1, which projects beyond the edge of the leaves of a book, as
clearly shown in Figs. 1, 2 and 3, is attached an identifying character (9) which may be permanently afiixed, removable or adapted to be erased. The base member 1, as shown in Figs. 1, 2- and 3, fits between the leaves of a book near the base thereof, and its hooks 2-2 fit over the edge of the book binding.
The shape of the hooks 2 is such that these hooks are easily and quickly attached to the book binding, and when in place are not liable to become detached while the book is being handled. It will also be noted that when several of the book markers are being used in. the same book, as is so fre quently the case, any marker may be removed and reattached in a different place in the book without disturbing the position of any other marker. This repositioning of any marker is easily and quickly accomplished, since the only operations necessary is the slipping of one hook from the book binding, the removal of the particular marker to its new location and there positioned by bringing the hooks into engagement with the binding.
Preferably, book markers in accordance with this invention are made of thin strips of celluloid, and the base and stem members 1 and 3 are preferably glued together, although they might be riveted or they might be formed of one piece of celluloid.
It will be understood from the foregoing that a book marker embodying the features of this invention is simple and compact, and is easily and readily attached to and detached from a book.
What is claimed is:
'1. A book marking device comprising a base member adapted to be placed between the leaves of a book and having means provided integrally therewith at each end for engaging the book binding, and a characterbearing member attached to the base mem ber and projecting beyond the leaves.
2. A book marking device comprising a base member adapted to be placed between the leaves of a book and having a hook provided at each end thereof for engaging the book binding, and a character bearing member secured to the base member and projecting beyond the leaves.
