WALTER I. MILLER AND BRADFORD O. IRONS, OF LINESVILLE, PENNSYL- VANIA, ASSIGNORS OF ONE-THIRD OF THEIR RIGHT TO ROBERT P.
MILLER, OF SAME PLACE.-
IWIPROVEMENT IN CLOTHES-WASHERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 124,844, dated March 19, 1872.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, WALTER I. MILLER and BRADFORD O. IRONS, of Lmesville, in the county of Crawford and State of Pennsylva" nia, have invented a new and valuable Improvement in Clothes-Washers; and we do hereby declare that thefollowin g is a full, clear, and exact description of the construction and operation of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawing making a part of this specification, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon.
Figure 1 of the drawing is a representation of a transverse vertical section of my invention. Fig. 2 is a bottom end view ofthe same.
This invention has relation to clothes-washers; and consists in the hereinafter-described novel construction of a hand-plunger for beat; ing the clothes, in which is combined an airchamber, a series of airtubes, and a valve, operating in the manner hereinafter specified.
In the drawing, A represents a conical plunger-head, provided with a series of open spouts, or, depending from its bottom, and encircled by a flange, B also, provided with a spout, b, rising from its apex, and containing a valve, 0. The'head Aincloses an air-space, 01, toward which the valve opens, and into which it admits air when the plunger is lifted. The tubes at b communicate with the air-chamber in the'manner shown. A long spout, E, used as a handle, fits over the tube 1).
The device is, used in beating the clothes which are placed in a tub with water and suds. The edges of the tubes and the flange serve the same purpose as a wa sh-board or corrugated d'asher.
When the plunger is raised the air passes into the chamber d, the valve F opening to admit it. When the plunger is let fall the air tubes into and among the clothes, causing the water to thoroughly impregnate them, and to. receive sufficient agitation to extract the dirt. The lower edges of the tubes a and flange B should be rounded sothat the clothes may not be cut or torn.
The valve is secured to a removable block, F, which may be taken out whenever it is desired to clean the air-chamber, wherein dirt will, in time, accumulate.
What we claim as our invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The combination of the hollow head A, tubes at b, flange B, spout E, and valve 0, substantially as described.
In testimony that we claim the above we have hereunto subscribed our names in the presence of two witnesses.
