DUMP CAR.
APPLICATION FILED mm, 1911.

unfit snares ienrnnr environ WILLIAM L. BURNER AND JAMES D. BENBO'W. 0F COLUMBUS, OHIO, ASSIGNORS TO THE KILBOURNE AND JACOBS MANUFACTURING COMPANY, 0F COLUMBUS, OHIO.
Application filed January 8, 1917.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, WILLIAM L. BURNER and Jarrns D. Bnivnow, citizens of the United States of America, residing at C0- lumbus, in the county of Franklin and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Dump-Cars of which the following is a specification.
Our invention relates to an improvement in looking devices for dump cars of the lateral dumping type preferably, and consists essentially in devices connected with the cylinder operated shaft adapted to engage an appropriately constructed locking bar connected with the car bed, the details of which will be hereinafter set forth.
In the drawings which are hereto attached and hereby made a part of this specification, Figure 1 shows our improved devices mounted upon a car, the view being of one end of the car in normal position.
Fig. 2 shows the car bed in its dumped position, the view being similarly from an end.
Figs. 3 and 4 are details member.
Referring to the drawings, 1 is a car bed pivotally mounted at 2 on the underframe 3, the bolster appearing at 4. The locking bar 5 is pivotally secured at 6 to the car bed 1, and has the joint illustrated at 7 to permit folding, as shown in Fig. 2 on the opposite side of the car. Said locking bar 5 is pivotally connected at 8 with the looking member 9 which at its other end is pivoted at 10 to the bolster 4 carried on the under frame 3. Said member 9 is shown in detail in Figs. 3 and 4, reference to which shows a U-form thereof having the sides 11 and 12, and the curved or depending tongue member 13 with the hook 14 formed at the free end thereof. A lug 15 forms a stop on the ledge or shoulder 16.
The shaft 17 carries the arm 18 rigidly thereon, and pivotally associated therewith at 19 is the link 20, which at its other end is pivoted at 21 to a second locking member 22 which is pivoted at 23 on the bolster 4, and carries a roller 24 to engage with and to travel over the tongue member 13.
When the car bed is in normal position illustrated in F ig. 1, the roller 24 rests on the ledge 16 and its movement is limited by the lug 15, the locking member 22 being held against movement by the link 20 and of the locking Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Nov. 27, 191?. Serial No. 141,252.
the arm 18 controlled through the shaft 17 which is, in this position of the parts, locked. It will be understood that the shaft 17 is operated in a well-known manner by the air cylinder appropriately mounted, or in some other manner, such means not being illustrated since they form no part of this invention.
To dump the car, the shaft 17 is rotated to lift the locking member 22 on its pivot 23, whereby the roller 24 is disengaged from the ledge 16 and as the car bed is lifted to a dumping position (see Fig. 2) the roller 24 travels along the tongue 13, and is prevented from parting from the tongue by the hook 14. The lading being discharged, the car bed is righted and during this movement the locking bar 5 moves downwardly thereby lowering the locking member 9 on its pivot 10 and moving the tongue 13 under the roller 24 until the rolter rests on the ledge 16, normally against the lug 15, and so long as the shaft 17 is locked, the locking members 9 and 22 are in secure engagement and the car bed is held against a dumping movement in the direction illustrated in Fig. 2.
The construction of the locking and operating devices on the opposite side of the car is the same as that described above and the relative positions of the devices when the car bed is in the positions illustrated in Figs. 1 and 2 are therein shown. Theef'ore no further statement concerning them is necessary.
What we claim is 1. In a dump car a pivoted bed, a locking bar pivotally connected therewith, a locking member pivotally connected with said bar and with the car underframe, a tongue formed on said member, a second locking member pivoted to the under mme of said car adapted to engage said tongue, and means for swinging said second locking member out of locking engagement with said tongue to permit the car bed to be dumped.
2. In a dump car a pivoted bed, a locking bar pivotally connected therewith, a locking member pivotally connected with said bar and with the car underframe, a depending tongue formed on said member, said tongue having a ledge thereon, a second locking member adapted to engage said tongue on said ledge to look the parts against opera-- said member, said tongue having a ledge or shoulder formed on its inner end, a second locking member pivoted to the underframe and being adapted for sliding or rolling engagement with said tongue when said parts are in motion, and means for locking said second member over said ledge when the car bed is in normal position and for moving said second member out of its locking position to permit said sliding or rolling engagement with said tongue when the car bed is being dumped.
4. In a dump, car having a pivotally mounted bed and a locking bar depending therefrom, a locking member pivotally connected to said locking bar and the underframe of the car, a depending tongue on said member, said tongue having a ledge or 25 shoulder formed on its inner end, a second locking member pivoted to the underframe and being adapted for sliding or rolling engagement with said tongue when said parts are in motion, ond member over said ledge when the car bed is innormal position and for moving said second member out of its locking position to permit said sliding or rolling en- :2 bed is being dumped, and means for preventing said second member from being disengaged from said tongue. In testimony whereof we affix our signatures in the presence of two witnesses.
