IMPROVEMENT INCULTIVATORS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 124,831, dated March 19, 1872.
reference marked thereon.
Figure 1 of the drawing is a representation of atop plan view of my invention. Fig. 2 is a vertical longitudinal section of the same.
This invention has relation to cultivators; and the novelty consists in the construction and arrangement of the devices hereinafter particularly described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawing, A represents the wheels of a cultivator, having a bent axle, B. 0 represents the shovel-beams, hinged to the axle B so as to be capable of lateral movement. D represents the shovel-shanks, and D the shovels. E are handles attached to the beams 0, so that their position may be changed. F represents the draft-pole secured to the axle B by a pin, f. Grindicates aweight arranged near the forward end of the pole to counterbalance the weight of the drivers, whose seat G is secured to the rear end of the pole. The
weight G is adjustable along the pole to suit and counterbalance different weights; or the balancing device may be a box or receptacle for variable ballast. The pole is made in two sections, pivoted together, the rear section being slotted to receive the end of the forward section. The object of this construction is to allow the seat to be raised out of the way when the driver walks. A dog, H, pivoted to the side of the rear section, falls on and takes hold of the axle whenever the seat is raised,
and thus prevents it from falling. I represents foot-rests or stirrups attached to the pole. J are braces extending to it diagonally from near the ends of the axle. K represents the whiffletree to which the team is attached.
1 claim as my invention- The balance draft-pole F, composed of two pivoted or hinged sections and secured to the axle B, in combination with the adjustable or variable weight G, drivers seat G, and dog H, or its equivalent, as and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony that I claim the above I have hereunto subscribed my name in the presence of two witnesses. v
JOSEPH THOMAS WILLFORD rxnnxnnn.
