AIVIUSEMENT OR EXERCISING DEVICE.
Application led February 19, 1917.
To all whom t may concern.'
Be it known that I, F RANK P. BAGHMAN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Akron, in the county of Summit and State of Ohio, have invented new and useful Improvements in Amusement or Exercising Devices, of which the following is a specification.
This invention has relation to amusement or exercising devices of that type wherein the eect of the delivery of a blow by the user of the device against a suitable portion thereof is adapted to set other mechanism in operation whereby the strength or force of the blow is either recorded or indicated, and the object of the invention is the provision of novel mechanism of the general type described, which will furnish amusement and exercise to the user and which when used by two or more persons may constitute a game apparatus. More specifically the invention comprises a frame on which are mounted a plurality of pulleys or the like, quadrilaterally disposed in imitation of the respective position of the bases of a base ball diamond and having extending` around said pulleys a flexible member such as a cable bearing a miniature toy gure simulating a base ball runner. The device has further provision for shifting the exible member longitudinally around said pulleys upon the delivery of a blow to suitable mechanism having connection with said member and so arranged that the length of movement or distance traveled by the figure from the initial starting point is proportional to the impact of the blow delivered. Means are also provided for returning the member and ligure to their original positions upon the termination of the forward movement of the member and toy figure so that the device is then ready for reuse.
With the foregoing and other objects in View, the invention consists in the novel construction, combination and arrangement of parts constituting the invention to be hereinafter specifically described and illustrated in the accompanying drawings which form a part hereof wherein is shown the preferred embodiment of the invention, but it is to be understood that changes, varia tions and modifications may be resorted to which come within the scope of the matter hereinafter claimed.

enlarged of the upper portion of the device. 4
F 1g. 5 is a view similar to Fig. l of the more central portions of the device, and
Fig. 6 is a sectional view of the impact or blow receiving member employed in the device.
Referring to the drawings in detail the device embodies a pair of upright standards 1 1 connected near their lower portions by a cross bar 2. Extending between the upper portions of the osts 1-1 is a horizontal connecting bar 3. becured to the upper end of the posts l-l by holding members 4L is a quadrilaterally formed member simulating the general form of a base ball diamond. The member 5 is preferably composed of two parallel coperating members 6 and 7 hav ing formed between them a channel 8. The member 6 is provided with a recessed portion through which extends a pin 9 constituting a pivot for a sheave 10. This recessed portion is arranged at one of the angles or intersections of two of the side forming members at the right of Fig. l. The member 5 is also provided at the junction of the two other side members or arms of the device with a recessed portion through which extends a shaft 11 constituting a pivot for a sheave l2. The shaft 11 extends rearwardly through the member 5 for a purpose to be later described. At the angle be tween the members of the device at the left the member 6 is providedwith a recessed portion through which extends a pin 13 conn stituting a pivot for a sheave 14. At the lower portion of the device the inner member 6 is provided with an enlargement 15 provided with a recess through which eX- tend pins 16 and 17 constituting pivots for sheaves 18 and 19 respectively. The entire frame is stiffened by means of a brace 2O the lower end of which is adapted to rest on suitable foundation and is connected by means of a bar 50 with the bar 2 and the uplll@ per end thereof is connected by a coupling member 21 with the upper portion of the member 7 at the vertex or upper angle of the member 5. The brace 20 is provided with a bearing for a shaft 11, and mounted on this shaft 11 is a sheave 22. Y
Mounted on the cross bar 3 is a bearing 23 for a horizontal shaft 21 the rear end of which is suitably mounted in the bearing 25 secured to the brace 20. Mounted on the front end of the shaft 2-1 is an impact receiving arm 26 in the form of a crank preferably terminating at its free end in a head 27 which is covered with some cushioning material 28 preferably of resilient quality and usually spherical in contour to resemble the general shape and size of an ordinary base ball. Mounted on the shaft 2l in front of the bearing 23 is a sheave 29 and rearwardly of the bearing 23 is a she-ave or drum 30. The arm 26, sheave 29 and the drum 30 are all fixedly secured at the shaft 24C and revolve therewith.
Extending in the groove or channel 8 of the member 5 and seated in the grooved faces of the pulleys 10, 12, 14, 18 and 19 is a flexible member 31 preferably comprising a cable or cord and this member extends upwardly after passing partially around the grooved face of the pulley 19 and is wound one or more times around the sheave 29 and from thence downwardly partially around the sheave 18 and then around the sheaves 14, 12 and 10. This flexible member 31 is in a taut condition so as to frictionally engage the sheave 29 and be moved by the revolution thereof. Secured to and preferably wrapped one or more times around the drum 30 is a flexible member such as a cable 33 which extends upwardly around the sheave 22 and then downwardly as shown in the drawings and to the lower end of which is connected a counter-weight 34. Mounted on the flexible member 31 is a carrier 35 adapted to travel in the channel or groove 8 and which bears, outside of the channel, a toy figure 36 usually simulating in miniature a base ball player in conventional uniform. The toy figure 3G when the device is at rest will be positioned at 37 adjacent to the sheave 19 which in the use of the device constitutes the home plate.
lThe device is used by striking the cushioned free end of the impact arm 26 with some instrument such as a base ball bat, which causes a rapid rotation of the shaft 24 and sheave 29 thereby moving the member 31 and the toy figure 36 along the groove 18 around the sheaves 10, 12 and 14 which may be designated for convenience as first, second and third base positions and nally to the sheave 18. The amount of travel of the toy figure will be directly proportional tothe force and quality of the blow on the end of the impact arm 26, that is to say by way of illustration a light blow may cause the figure to travel as far as the sheave 12 and a blow of greater effectiveness may make the figure travel to a point between the sheaves fl-l and 1S or to any other position. rl`he rotation of 'the shaft 24 causes the drum 30 to wind upon the flexible member 33 thereby raising the counter-weight 3st and when the progressive movement of the toy figure 36 ceases the counter-weight 34 acting by gravity upon the drum 30 will rotate the shaft 24: in a reverse direction which through the connected mechanism returns the figure to its initial or original. starting position. From the foregoing it will be seen that the device may be used as a strength testing device, as an exercising device, as an amusement device and when two or more persons agree in the use of the device, it may constitute a game apparatus.
