LOCKJNUT.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Nov. 22%, 1911?.
lt pplieation filed March 22, 1517. Serial No. 156,756.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, CHARLES E. Con- STABLE and JAMns LUTHER PAINTER, citi- Zens of the United States, residing at Rogersville, in the county of Webster, State of Missouri, have invented a new and useful Lockl\'ut, of-which the following is a specification.
The device forming the subject matter of this application is a nut lock, and the invention aims to provide novel means whereby a spring clamp carried by the nut and engaging the bolt, may be held in place and removed at the will of an operator.
It is within the province of the disclosure to improve generally and to enhance the utility of devices of that type to which the resent invention appertains.
\Vith the above and other objects in view which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention resides in the combination and arrangement of parts and in the details of construction hereinafter described and claimed, it being understood that changes in the precise embodiment of the invention herein disclosed can be made within the scope of what is claimed, without departing from the spirit of the invention.
In the accompanying drawings Figure 1 shows in side elevation, a nut and bolt embodying the device forming the subject matter or" this application;
Fig. 2 is a top plan of the structure shown in Fig. 1; 0
Fig. 8 is a section taken approximately on the line 33 of Fig. 1; and t Fig. 4 is a plan view 01 the spring locking clamp.
In the accompanying drawings, the numeral 1 denotes a bolt. A. nut 2 is threaded onto the bolt and is provided in its outer face with a cavity 8 surrounding the bolt 1. The cavity 3 defines a wall 1- in the periphcry of the nut 2. The wall 4: has a notch 5, preferably located adjacent one corner of the nut. The sides 6 of the notch 5 converge inwardly. The notch 5 includes an extension 7 prolonged beyond the base 15 of the cavity 3.
The invention comprises a curved spring clamp 8 located in the cavity 3, the cavity being suiiiciently large so that the free portion of the clamp 8 may have a slight lateral movement. The clamp S is provided at one end with an inclined barb 9 engaging the bolt 1. The other end of the clamp is sup plied with a head 10 received in the notch 5 and resting on the base 15 of the cavity 3. The edges 12 of the head 10 converge inwardly to cooperate with the inwardly converging sides 6 of the notch 5. The head 10 is spaced from the base 14 of the extension 7 of the notch 5.
Noting Fig. 3 of the drawings, it will be clear that the nut 2 can be rotated in one direction, but when an attempt is made to rotate the nut in an opposite direction, the pointed barb 9 will bite into the bolt 1 and prevent a reverse rotation of the nut.
Owing to the fact that the sides 6 of the notch 5 converge inwardly, and because the edges 12 of the head 10 converge inwardly and cooperate with the sides 6 of the notch, one end of the spring clamp will be held securely by the nut 2.
A tool of any kind, such as a screw driver, may be inserted between the free end of the spring clamp 8 and the periphery of the bolt 1, close to the barb 9, and in this way the barb may be freed from the bolt, permitting a reverse rotation of the nut. The spring clamp 8 may be bent by means of apair of pliers or otherwise, to carry the barb 9 inwardly and to enhance the hold of the barb on the bolt, such an operation permit ting the structure to be used repeatedly.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed is 1. In a device of the class described, a bolt; a nut threaded onto the bolt and provided in its outer face with a cavity surrounding the bolt and defining a wall at the periphery of the nut, the wall having a notch the edges of which flare outwardly; and a curved spring clamp in the cavity and provided at one end with a barb engaging the bolt, one end of the spring clamp having a head engaged in the notch and including diverging edges engaged with the flaring edges of the notch.
2. In a device of the class described, a bolt; a nut threaded onto the bolt and provided in its outer end face with a cavity surrounding the bolt and defining a wall at the periphery of the nut, the wall having a notch; and a curved spring clamp in the cavity and seated on the base of the cavity, the clamp being provided at one end with a barb engaging the bolt, the-othenend of the In -testimon-ythat weclaimthe foregoing spnng Clamp 'belng mounted 1n the Jn'oth, ris our own, n*e"have hereto afiixed iour sig- 1! the notch lncluchng an extension pemng natures 1n the )resence Of tWO \vltnesses.
