JOSEF GEIST, OE KRAIZBUEG-DN IHE-INN, GEBIVIANY,
GBASPING-TONGS.
Application filed August 21, 1917.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, Josnr Gnrs'r, citizen of Germany, residing at Kraiburg-on-the- Inn, in the Kingdom of Bavaria, Germany, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Grasping-Tongs; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to improvements in grapples and refers more particularly to a novel construction of a certain class of tongs as described and claimed in Letters Patent of the United States numbered 1,144,356, issued to me June 29, 1915, the object of my invention being to provide certain additional improvements, hereinafter described, for the purpose of enhancing the usefulness of the said grapple or tongs and especially permitting its use for hoisting purposes.
I attain my object by the combination and arrangement of parts as hereinafter described and as shown in the accompanying drawing in which a pair of my improved tongs is shown in its open position in full lines and in its closed or grasping position in dotted lines.
As shown in the drawing, a pair of ropes are so attached to the member or cross head carrying the grasping levers that a pull on one of the ropes has the same effect as if the handle of the grasping tongs as described in the patent above referred to were held horizontally, permitting the tongs to open wide, while a pull on the other rope has the same elfect as a pull on the handle and rod of the implement referred to would have, the effect of the square of joints with sides of approximately equal lengths and parallel to each other being that the grasping tongs close, the legs or levers of the tongs being pressed toward each other.
There is an advantage in the present construction over hoisting tongs in which two ropes are attached in such a manner that when one of the ropes is pulled the grasping tongs are opened, and when the other rope is pulled the tongs are closed, inasmuch as the principle of operation is different, and such tongs can not be used as a rod-grasper.
The two legs or levers a, b, are pivoted to each other, the leg a being connected at f and the leg I) being connected at g by means of an intermediary joint-piece h to a cross- Specification of Letters Patent.

head c,just as in the patent above referred to. An important feature of the present invention consists in providing the said crosshead 0 with carrying hooks 70, Z at two points, marked 0 and 2', at a greater distance from each other than the joints f, g of the legs a, b, and another important feature of the invention consists in the proper location of the pivotal points 0 and f to obtain the automatic opening and closing action here inafter referred to. The ropes m, n are respectively secured to the said hooks 70, Z, one of the said ropes being intended for letting down and the other for raising the tongs.
The working joints 0, i of the hooks in, Z on the piece 0 are so disposed in their relative positions to joints f, g of the legs a, b that the latter, owing to the direct connection of one and the indirect connection of the other leg to the cross head, open automatically when the head 0 suspends by means of the hook 711 from the rope m, but close, also automatically, when the hook Z is lifted by means of the rope n.
In the example shown in the drawing the working-point point 0, operative for the opening of the tongs is laterally above the joint f of the tongs near the left-hand edge of the cross-head 0 while the working-point 2', intended to effectuate the closing of the tongs, is laterally above the joint 9 near the right hand edge of the cross head 0.
In using my improved implement I let it down by the rope m to the object intended for hoisting, the implement laying itself in open position on the latter. Then the rope m should be loosened while the rope a should be pulled up, the legs at the same time closing and grasping the object to be raised.
What I claim is:
1. In tongs of the character described, the combination with a pair of pivotally connected legs each thereof comprising a gripping member and an integral upwardly projecting lever portion, of a cross head having said lever portions pivoted thereto intermediate its ends, and operating means for said legs pivotally connected to said cross head near its opposite ends.
2. In tongs of the character described, a pair of legs pivotally connected to each other, a cross head to which said legs are pivotally connected, and a plurality of operating means for said legs pivotally connected to said cross head, the distance between the pivotal points of said operating means on the cross head being greater than the distance between the points at which the legs are pivotally connected to the cross head.
3. In tongs of the character described, the combination with a pair of pivotally connected legs each thereof comprising a gripping member and an integral upwardly projecting lever portion, of a cross head having said lever portions pivoted thereto intermediate its ends, rigid members for operating said legs pivotally connected to said cross head near its opposite ends, and flexible tension ap lying means connected to said rigid mem ers.
4. In tongs of the character described, a
pair of legs pivotally connected to each other, a cross head to which one of said legs is directly pivoted, a link pivotally connecting the other leg to said cross head, and a plurality of operating means for said legs pivotally connected to said cross head, the
distance between the pivotal points of said JOSEF GEIST.
