To all whom z't may concern.'

Be it known that I, GEORGE S. Roon, citizen of the United States, residing at Houghton, in the county of Houghton and State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful improvements in Swings, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawing.

The invention relates to improvements in a convertible back, particularly adapted for swings, porch hammocks, settees and the like, although capable of application to chairs or wherever a convertible back may be desirable. e

rlfhe object of the invention is to provide a swing, chair or other device with an adjustable back, which may be readily converted into a canopy or shading means for the seat.

A further object of the invention is to provide simple and eilicient means for maintaining the back in an inclined, vertical or horizontal position with reference to the seat, so that if the occupant desires the back can be readily shifted from a vertical to other positions to protect the occupant from the sun rays, wind or other elements. It will of course be understood that as the position of the sun and wind changes, the convertible back may be accordingly adjusted and retained in its adjusted position at all times to protect the occupant.

Another object of the invention is to provide a seat, swing, hammock or the like with an adjustable back, capable of not only being converted into a canopy and protector, but also one which is adapted to be shifted from one extreme side of the device to the other, as may be desirable.

In the accompanying drawings I have disclosed the preferred embodiment of my invention in which the convertible back is disclosed as being attached to a porch swing or hammock, but it will of course be understood that the device is capable of application wherever desired, and that many changes in the arrangement and construction of the parte can be made without departing from the invention.

drawings, wherein like reference characters indicate corresponding parts, the numeral l designates a swing seat, preferably of the upholstered type suspended by means of standards 2 arranged on each side thereof and supporting chains 3 attached to said standards and to suitable portions of the swing. This is a well known and approved means of supporting a swing, but l wish it to be understood that any other supporting means may be employed if desired. rlhe frame of the swing is preferably composed of metallic frame bars and is conveniently upholstered.

Extending across each end ll and secured to the vertical portions thereof by bolts 5 .are the cross bars 6 having double arc portions 7 joined by intermediate portions carrying inwardly disposed pivot pins 8, and providing a narrow space between the adjacent ends of the arc portions for a purpose which will hereinafter appear. While it is preferable to dispose one of the bars 6' upon each end of the frame this is not absolutely necessary as good results can be obtained with the use of but a single bar attached to one end of the swing seat. The bars 6 have arranged within the curved edge portions thereof suitable open ended sockets 9 for retaining the convertible back to be presently described in different adjusted po sitions. Any number of these sockets may be employed or any other equivalent retain ing means may be utilized.

The swing is provided with a convertible back l0 of any suitable design having fixedly attached thereto on each end intermediate its sides, slotted arms l1, which are of a substantial length. rl`he pivot pins 8 carried by the bars 6 are disposed within the elongated slots 11 in the swinging armsll and constitute a pivot for the convertible back and upon which the said back is turned.

The bars 6 have attached thereto intermediate their ends and between the arc portions thereof metallic brackets l2, rigidly i fitted to the arms extending below the said bars and provided with inwardly rebent portions 13 having sockets let therein, for receiving pins 15 carried by the lower ends of the slotted arms ll for maintaining the back. in its elevated or horizontal position as disclosed in full lines in Fig. l. When the back is to be converted into a canopy by elevating the same the arms ll are moved outward and swung on their pivots 8 until they oc lili@ taining the back in its diierent positions, and means for positively holding the back in one position comprising a bracket carried by the retaining device and having a rebent portion provided With a socket receiving a part carried by the back support.

In a device of the character described, the combination With a seat, aback therefor, a retaining device attached to the seat, means for pivoting the back to the seat compris ing an arm having a slottherein receiving a pivot pin carried by the retaining device, a plurality of separated engaging portions disposed Within the retaining device on each side of the pivot pin, and a part carried by the back supporting arm adapted to coperate with said engaging portions for maintaining the back in various elevated positions.

5. In a device of the character described,

the combination with a seat, a back there for, a retaining device attached to the seat, means for pivoting the back to the seat comprising an arm having a slot therein receiving a pivot pin carried by the retaining device, a plurality of separated engaging portions disposed within the retaining device on each side of the pivot pin, and a part carried by the back supporting arm adapted to cooperate With said engaging portions 3o for maintaining the back in various elevated positions, the said engaging portions being located in diderent vertical planes.
