Be it knownthat I, EDWARD C. LEAK, a citizen of the United States, residing at McGill, in the county of `White Pine and State of Nevada, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Road-Drugs, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to road drags, and one of the principal objects of the invention is to provide an improved drag for eradicating the ridges land ruts in a roadway, whereby the latter may be maintained in good condition.-
Another object of the invention is to provide an improved drag in which simplicity and economy of manufacture are coupled with durability and efficiency in operation.
My invention is hereinafter described with reference to the accompanying drawing in which- Figure 1 represents a top plan view of a drag constructed according to my invention.
Fig. 2 represents a vertical longitudinal sectional view therethrough, taken on the plane indicated by the line 2-2 of Fig. 1 and looking in the direction indicated by the arrow.
Fig. 3 represents `a view taken on the plane transversely of the drag as indicated by the line 3-3 of Fig. l, showing a modified form of cross bar.
Referring more particularly to the drawing, the drag includes a pair of parallel side runners 5, rounded at their forward ends at 6. Metal strips 7 are secured to the outer faces of the runners at their forward ends, and terminate in eyes 8 whereby the drag may be drawn over the roadway.
The runners are connected at their forward, central and rear portions, by the cross bars 9, 1() and 11 respectively. These bars extend in parallel relation with each other and at right angles to the runners 5. The central bar 10 is disposed in a vertical plane, while the front and rear bars 9 and 11 respectively, lie in parallel planes at an angle of about forty-five degrees to the vertical and are inclined rearwardly from their upper to their lower edges. The cross bars 9 and 11 are squared at their bottom edges 12 and have these edges, as well as their front faces, faced with boiler plate or other suitable metal at 13. The front face of middle bar 10 is also faced with boiler plate 14.
The runners are further transversely connected and braced by the tie rods 15, which i Specification `of Letters Patent.

are disposed in pairs immediately to the rear of the cross bars, and lying in spaced relation to each other against the cross bars. This disposition while bracing and connecting the runners also provides a strong backing or brace for the cross bars.
` The runners are connected at the tcp edges by the cross braces 16 and 17. The latter extend substantially at right angles to each other and connect andbrace the runners in diagonal lines extending from the central portion of one runner between the forward and middle cross bars to the central portion of the other runner occurring between the central and rear cross bars. The central portions of the front and rear cross bars are connected and braced to the adjacent ends of the cross braces 16 and 17, by means of the bars or braces 18.
In this manner both the runners and the cross bars are equally strengthened and braced, and are prevented from warping or breaking.
A trailer or leveler for the drag is provided, and comprises a pair of I-beams 19 of suitable weight. These beams are connected in parallel relation by the chains 20, in such a manner that the flanges of the beams are disposed in vertical lplanes, so that the edges of said ianges rest against the ground in the manner indicated in Fig. 2.
The forward I-beam is connected by means of a longer and a shorter chain or other suitable flexible elements indicated at 21 and 22 respectively, to the rear ends of runners 5. The difference in length of the connecting chains 21 and 22 determine the angle at which the I-beams are disposed relatively to the drag, this angle being preferably about forty-iive degrees.
The cross bars may as indicated in Fig. 3 have concaved or arched under edges 23, whereby the roadway will be crowned as the drag moves over the same. This construction of the drag is preferable where narrow roads are to be treated.
In use the drag is drawn over the roadway by a suitable draft animal or other source of power, so that the ridges or humps in the path of the drag are engaged and scraped consecutively by the forward inclined cross bar, the central vertical cross bar and the rear inclined cross bar, the dirt or surface thus scraped o being left in the depressions or holes of the roadway over which the drag passes. rllhe I-beams are of suitable weight, and are particularly of use where the drag is being operated upon an old road or upon any other road where rock is loosened by the drag, the I-beanisf operating in engaging the rocks and *de-W fleeting them to one side of the roadway.
By disposing the I-beams with their flanges in vertical planes, a plurality of working edges is provided, so as to more efliciently effect the purpose of the trailer' or leveler.
Although I have described the preferred embodiment of my invention, I may desire to make such changes in the construction, combination and arrangement of parts thereof as do not depart from the spirit of the invention and the scope of the appended claims.
I claim 1. A road drag comprising a pair of parallel runners spacedapart and havingdraft devices secured to their forward ends, cross bars disposed at right angles to'said runners and rigidly connecting the latter at their forward and rear portions, both saidV forward and rear cross bars being inclined rearwardly in a plane approximately forty- Vfive degrees from the vertical and a central the rear portions of the cross bars, and
crossed braces extending the entire length of the drag and bracing the runners to each other and to the cross bars.
