Specification of Letters Patent.

Application filed March 27, 1917. Serial No. 157,675.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JAMES BELL, a citizen of the United States, residing at West Medway, in the county of Norfolk and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Extracting- Tools; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to a tool for extracting electric light bulbs from their sockets and also for extracting the sockets; and it consists in the novel construction and combination of the parts hereinafter fully described and claimed.
In the drawings, Figure l is a side view of an extracting tool constructed according to this invention. Fig. 2 is a plan view of the tool. Figs. 3 and 4 are side views showing respectively how the tool engages with a lamp bulb and with a lamp socket.
Two jaws 2 and 3 are provided and are pivoted together like a pair of tongs by a pin 4. The shank 5 of one jaw is secured to a suitable pole or handle 6, and the shank 7 of the other jaw is provided with a cord or wire 8 for operating it. A spring 9 is secured between the shank 7 and the jaw 2 so as to normally hold the jaws in their open position.
The upper end portions of the jaws have outwardly bent or ofl set extensions 10 which low terminate in inwardly projecting hooks 12. Curved plates 14 are secured to the jaws beand adjacent to the ofl'set extensions 10, and extend crosswise of the jaws. These plates 14 are adapted to grip an incandescent electric light bulb 15 when the cord is pulled upon, and as shown in Fig. 3.
The hooks 12 and ofiset portions are adapted to engage with the flange 16 on the lower end of a lamp socket 17 as shown in Fig. 4:, so that the socket can be removed.
This tool enables a large number of lamps and their sockets to be removed and replaced in a short space of time, and without the use of a step ladder when the lamps are arranged overhead.
What I claim is:
A tool for extracting electric light bulbs and their sockets, comprising a pair of pivoted jaws having outwardly oifset extensions at their upper ends which terminate in inwardly projecting hooks adapted to engage with the flanges of the lamp sockets, said jaws having also curved plates secured to them below and adjacent to the said 01T- set extensions and adapted to engage with the bulbs when the hooks are clear of the socket flanges, said plates being arranged to be clear of the bulbs when the hooks engage with the socket flanges, and means for operating the said jaws.
