Be it known that we, ARTHUB M. WAITT, a resident of Sharon, -county of Litchfield, and State. of Connecticut, and WEYMER H. WAITT, a resident of New York, County and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Car-Doors, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
The present application is a division of an earlier application filed by us in the United States Patent Oflice on December 4:, 1912, Serial No. 7341:,911.
The present ihvention relates to sliding doors for railway cars and seeks to provide improved guarding and guiding devices for the bottom of the sliding door which can be economically manufactured and which is storm, spar and burglar roof.
The invention consists 1Il the features of improvement hereinafter set forth, illustrated in different forms in the accompanying drawings and more particularly pointed out in the appended claims.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a side elevation of a portion of a freight car and door therefor to which the present improvement is applied. Fig. 2 is a vertical section on line 2-2 of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is an enlarged detail face view of a portion of the lower edge of the door and the adjacent parts. Fig. 4 is a vertical section similar to Fig. 2 illustrating a modification.
The car is provided with an opening which is closed by the sliding door 10. The door posts 11 at the sides of the door opening are provided with portions which project outwardly beyond the outer face of the car which is formed by the siding or sheathing 12. A portion of the car floor 13 also extends outwardly through the door opening, between the lower ends of the door posts and over the car sill 14. The door is provided at its upper edge with supporting hangers 15 which are arranged to engagea suitable track member 16 Secured to the side of the car above the door openin v The lower edge of the door s provided with a protecting extension which is preferably in the form of a metal guard strip 17 of Z-shaped section. This guard strip is Secured to the-door so that it cannot be removed from outside the In the construction shown in Fig. 2, the outer, upturned flange 18 of the Z-shaped guard strip 17 is disposed between the outer and nner thicknesses of the car door and is secured to the outer thickness by screws 19 WhlCh are applied from the inner side of the flange 18 before the inner and outer thicknesses of the door are Secured together. The p horizontal portion of the guard strip extends nwardly beneath the portion of the car floor which extends through the door opening and is provided with-a downturned flange 20 at its inner edge which is preferably continu-ousthroughout thewidth of the door. This flange coperates with one or more safety brackets 21 each of which abuts against and is Secured to the face of the door sill 14 preferably by lag screws 22. In the form shown, two of these lagscrews are arranged near the upper edge of the bracket and one is centrally disposed near its lower edge. The upper edge of the bracket preferably abuts against the projecting portion of the car floor and the bracket is provided on its outer face with an upturned lip 23 which engages the depending flange 20 of the protective guard strip on the door to thereby hold the lower portion of the door m position and prevent access through the lower portion of the door opening when the door is closed. Preferably the flange 20 is provided on its outer facewith projecting bosses 24: and the lips 23 of the brackets are provided with convex inner faces which engage the bosses 24 in the closed position of the door to hold the lower portion of the latter closely adjacent the lower edge of the door opening. It should also be noted that the extension or guard strip 17 on the door extends below and across the joint or opening between the floor projection and the door to thereby protect the bottom part of the door opening. p
, The lag screws or similar fastening means at the upper edge of the bracket are arranged behind the flange 20 of the extension or guard strip at the lower edge of the door and ar'e inaccessible when the door is closed. It is thus impossible for unauthorized persons to obtain access to the car by removing the brackets 21, and the arrangement is such that it is not necessary, as in certain other safety brackets, to provide a projection or lag screw integral therewith. Even if the lag screw 22 at the lower edge of the door is removed, the bracket cannot be turned, because its upper edge abuts against the under face of the projecting floor. As an additional guard against turning the bracket may, if desired, be provided on its rear face with a short lug 25 which is forced into the face of the door sill when the bracket is secured in position. The Construction is such that it would be impossible to remove or loosen the brackets or to otherwise obtain access through the lower edge of the door opening when the door is closed. The form shown III Fig. 4; is similar to that shown in Fig. 2, except that the horizontal portion of the projecting guard strip 17' s of less width and the vertical flange 18 is secured to the inner face of the inner thickness of the door. For additional strength, the guard strip at its lower edge is also preferably held in place by bolts 26 which extend through the flange 18 thereof and through the lower edge portion of the door,. but even if the nuts on these bolts are loosened, the bolts cannot be removed and the fastenin screws 19 are still inaccessible. It should e noted that the guard brackets are located out of the way beneath the portion of the car floor which projects through the door opening. It will be also noted that inasmuch as the brackets do not extend outwardly beyond the projecting edge of the car floor the brackets are protected by the projecting portion of the car floor against danger of breakage in loadin heavy articles into or withdrawing them rom the car.
It is obvious that changes may be made in the details set forth without departure from the essentials of the invention as defined in the claim.
We claim as our invention:--
In combination, a car body having a door opening, a sill, door posts and a floor, said posts and floor having portions projecting outwardly over said sill and beyond the side of the car, a sliding wooden door for said opening a metal 'guard strip secured to the lower edge of the door so it cannot be removed from the door when the door is closed, saidguard cxtending inwardly beneath the projecting portion of the floor and having a downturned flange at its inner edge, and brackets secured to the outer face of said car sill, said brackets having inner and outer upwardly extending lips which do not project beyond the floor and which receive the downturned flange of said guard strip, and fastening devices located beneath the car floor and extendin through the inner lips of said brackets into the car sill, said fastening devices being located above the lower edge of said downwardly turned flange of the guard strip.
