With these and other ob ects in v1ew, as will hereinafter appear, the invention consists in the features of improvements hereinafter set forth, illustrated in different forms in the accompanying drawings and more particularly pointed out in the appended claims.

The car body is provided with an opening which is closed by a sliding door 10. The door posts 11 at the sides of the door opening preferably project outwardly beyond the outer face of the car formed of a siding 12. As usual, a header 15 for the door opening extends between the upper ends of the posts and beneath the car plate 16. A track block 17 is secured to the side of'the car above the door opening and its lower portion is recessed or cut away to receive a track member. As shown most clearly in Fig. 2, this track member comprises a lower projecting track flange 18 and upper protecting or guard flange 19 and an inner vertical spacing portion 20. The

upper protecting or guard flange 19 extends outwardly beyond the edge of the track flange l8 and is provided at its outer edge with a downturned lip 21, the lower edge of which is out-turned to more readily shed or deflect. rain and cinders away from the upper edge of the door and door opening. The track member, as shown in Fig. 2, is preferably formed of a single strip of sheet steel bent to proper shape to form the parts 18, 19, 20 and 21 of the track member, and the track member is securely held in position against the lower portion of the track block by bolts 17 which extend through the inner spacing member 20. Preferably, as shown,
the upper protecting or guard flange 19 is slightly inclined outwardly and downwardly to aid in shedding rain and cinders, and the upper portion of the track block 17 which extends over the protecting guard flange is provided with a correspondingly inclined face which fits snugly against the upper face of the flange. The inclined roof 22 of the car extends, as usual, over the track block.
The car door 10, in the construction shown, is formed of wood and is of double thickness. It is provided at its upper edge with a protecting extension or flange which is preferably in the form of a flat, metal plate 23 which extends across the entire top edge of the door, its lower portion being recessed into the outer face of the door and secured thereto by screws 24:. The upper portion of the door extension or flange 23 extends upwardly outside of the edge of the track flange 18 and its upper edge is located inside the lip 21 of the protectingguard flange and above the lower edge of the lip. The door extension 23 and the protecting guard flange 19 and downturned lip 21 thus provide a complete protective inclosure for the upper part of the door and of the door opening to thereby guard against the entrance of rain, snow or sparks when the door is in closed position, and the construction also provides a protecting inclo sure for the track flange and the parts of the door hanger riding thereon.
Hangers 25 are secured to the upper portion of the outer face of the door by bolts 26. In the preferred construction shown, the extension or guard plate 23 on the door is provided, at its upper edge and opposite each hanger, with a U-shaped recess 27, as
most clearly shown in Fig. 4-, and the upper portion of the door hanger is provided on its inner face with a correspondingly shaped portion 28 which fits within this recess. This upper portion of the hanger is preferably provided with an integral boss 29 whereon a roller 30 is mounted, the latter being held in place by a washer 31 and a bolt or rivet 32 extending through the boss 29 and the upper portion of the hanger. The main body of the hanger extends upwardly slightly above the bolt or rivet 32 and, as shown in Figs. 2 and 3, overlaps the edge of the recess 27 in the door extension or guard flange 23. The portion 28 of the hanger which fits in the recess extends above the main body portion and its outer face is flush with the outer face of the guard plate 23. The top portion of the part 28 is provided with laterally projecting lugs 33 which overlap the inner face of the guard flange 23 and the upper portions of the edges of the recess 27 therein. The upper portion of the hanger thus interlocks with and strengthens the guard plate or door extension 23 and effectively covers the edges of the recess 2'? therein to prevent the entrance of moisture and cinders. The extreme upper end portion of the hanger and the guard plate 23 also cooperate with the downturned lip 21 of the track member, not only to provide a. protective inclosure for the upper edge of the door and door opening, as described, but also to hold the upper edge of the door in proper position and prevent the disengagement of the track hangers from the track member. If the door is lifted at all when it is shifted, the rollers 30 of the hangers, in the preferred construction shown, will have a comparatively frictionless rolling contact with the protecting guard flange 19 and thereby prevent the jamming of the door.
The improved door mechanism is of simple construction, can be economically manufactured and effectively protects the upper portion of the door opening against pilfering and against the entrance of moisture and cinders. The door is securely held in position and in such a manner that it may be readily shifted. The door is arranged beneath the flange 18 of the track member whereon the hanger rollers 30 are carried, so that the supporting rollers or like parts of the hangers are above the center of gravity of the door and the construction is therefore well adapted to permit the easy sliding of the door and to resist the strains brought upon the door supporting parts. The door extension 23 and the overhanging flange 19 and lip 21 cooperate to eflectively protect the upper edge of the door opening and also protect the track and the track engaging members or rollers 30 of the door hangers. The rear end of the track member is preferably closed by a cap piece 58 (see Fig. 1). Its forward end is closed by the upper end of the door stop 43 and a part 59 secured thereto. As a further uard against the entrance of moisture and cinders into the space within the track member, the rear end of the extension plate 23 is preferably provided at its upper portion with an integral inturned part 60 which extends over the track flange 18.
In the form shown in Fig. 5, the protecting guard 23 at the upper edge of the door is formed by extending the outer thickness of the door upwardly, as shown. In this form, the track and protecting flanges 18 and 19 are formed of separate metal strips and are provided respectively with upturned and downturned inner flanges 61 and 62, through which the securing bolts 17 extend.
In the form shown in Fi 6, the extension plate or guard flange 23 at the upper edge of the door is arranged between the inner and outer thicknesses of the door and is held in place by bolts 63. In this form, the upper portion of the door hanger is inwardly offset and overlaps the upper edge of the door and the door hanger shown in Fig. 5 is of similar shape.
In the construction shown in Fig. 6, the track member is secured to a Z-shaped mem ber 64 such as commonly forms the edge portion of the roof of a metal car. The track block is interposed between the member 64 and the track member, and the parts are connected together by bolts 65. The inn 1 portion of the track flange 18 is preferably riveted, as shown, to the lower outwardly projecting flange of the Z-shaped member 64:.
In the construction shown in Figs. '7 and 8, the protecting guard above the track comprises a wooden block or part 66 and a depending metal strip or flange 67 which is secured to the block by screws 68. The track flange 18 is similar in construction to that shown in Fig. In this form, the upper portion of the track hanger is provided with a roller 69 which is arranged in a recess in the upper portion of the hanger and is held in place by two horizontal strips 70 riveted to the hanger and engaging an annular groove in the roller, so that the latter is free to rotate. portion of the door, the latter having a guard flange extending from edge to edge thereof and projecting upwardly outside of and above said track flange, and hanger brackets secured to the outer face of the door and having portions at their upper ends projecting inwardly through said guard flange and provided with rollers engaging said track flange, said car body having a projecting guard extending outwardly over said track flange and over and closely adjacent the upper edge of the extension guard flange of said door, substantially as described.

In combination, a car body having a door opening, a sliding door therefor, a track flange secured to the car body and projecting outwardly above the upper edge portion of the door, the latter having a guard flange extending from edge to edge thereof and projecting upwardly outside of and above said track flange, and hanger brackets secured to the outer face of the door and having portions at their upper ends projecting inwardly through said guard flange and provided with rollers engaging said track flange, said car body having a projecting guard extending outwardly over said track flange and having a downwardly extending lip overlapping the upper edge of the guard flange of said door, and cooperating therewith to protect the upper edges of the door opening and door and to hold said rollers in engagement with said track flange, substantially as described.
8. In combination, a car body having a door opening and having a projecting track flange secured thereto above the door opening, a sliding door having a guard flange extending from edge to edge thereof and projecting upwardly outside of and above said track flange, and hangers secured to the door and having supporting members inside of said guard flange and riding on said track flange, said supporting members being arranged between the planes of the inner and outer faces of the door, said car body having a projecting guard above said track flange provided with a downwardly extend ing lip overlapping the upper edge of the extension guard flange of said door and cooperating therewith to protect said track flange and the upper edges of said door and door opening, substantially as described.
In combination, a car body having a dOOr opening and having a projecting track flange secured thereto above the door opening, a sliding door having a guard flange extending from edge to edge thereof and projecting upwardly outside of and above said track flange, hangers secured to said door and having supporting rollers engaging said track flange, said rollers being arranged inside of said guard flange and be tween the planes of the inner and outer faces of the door, and a projecting guard flange secured to the car body and project ing outwardly over said track flange and having a downturned lip overlapping the upper edge of the guard flange of said door, substantially as described.
5. In combination, a car body having a door opening and having a projecting track flange secured thereto above the door opening, a sliding door having a guard flange extending from edge to edge thereof and projecting upwardly outside of and above said track flange, hangers secured to said door and having supporting rollers engaging said track flange, said rollers being arranged inside of said guard flan e and between the planes of the inner and outer faces of the door, and a projecting guard flange secured to the car body and projecting outwardly over said track flange and having a downturned lip overlapping the upper edge of the guard flange of said door and the upper ends of said hangers, the latter being secured to the outer face of the door and having integral portions extending through the guard flange of the door and whereon said rollers are mounted, substantially as described.
6. In combination, a car body having a door opening, a sliding door therefor, a metal track member above the door opening comprising a vertical spacing portion secured to the side of the car, an upper projecting flange having a downturned lip at its outer edge, and a lower projecting track flange, said door having a guard flange extending its full width, projecting upwardly outside of and above said track flange and terminating inside of and above the lower edge of said lip, and hanger brackets secured to the door and having supporting members arranged inside of said guard flange and engaging said track flange, substantially as described.
7. In combination, a car body having a door opening, a sliding door therefor, a track flange secured to the car body above said door opening and projecting outwardly over the upper edge of the door, a protecting flange secured to the car body above said track flange and having a down-turned lip at its outer edge, a metal guard flange secured to the outer face of the door, extending from side to side thereof, projecting upwardly outside of and above said track flange and terminating inside of and above the edge of said lip, and hanger brackets secured to the face of said door and having portions extending through said guard flange and provided with supporting members engaging said track flange.
