Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Nov, 20 191%.
Application filed February 12, 1917. Serial No. 148,189.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it knownthat I, SETH E. PERKINS, a citizen of the United States of America, and a resident of Waterloo, Blackhawk county, Iowa, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Door-Operating Devices, of which the following is a speci-- fication.
' My invention relates to improvements in door operating devices, and the object of my improvement is to supply means for opening and closing "swinging double doors, such as are usually employed in barns or garages, my device being combined with a simple latchmg-means, and adapted 'to be actuated-by means of the movement of a single operating element.
for opening and closing them, the full lines representing the positions of the doors and operating parts when the doors are closed,
and the dotted lines showing the positions of the same parts when the doors are opened; Fig. 2 is an elevation of said doors and of the latching-means therefor as operatively associated with the said door opening and closing means.
' Similar numerals of reference denote cor- ;responding parts throughout the several 35 A views. I
vThe pair ofdoors 1 and 2 are mounted on hinges 5 and 6 respectively to swing tn and from each other from the ambs 3 and 4.
The door 1 has a catch 7 adapted to removably receive therein-a latch-bar 10, the latter pivoted near its opposite end on a pivotbolt 9 to the other door 2 and working within alimiting loop 8 on the latter door.
The latch has on its end near said pivot-bolt a vertical eye 11, in'which is seated the downturned hither end of a connecting-rod 12, the opposite end of the rod being upturned to have its upturned end seated in a bearing-hole 16 in the middle of a swingarm 15.- The arm 15 is pivoted at one end on a pivot-bolt 14, loosely, said bolt being fixed in a bracket 13 on the jamb 4;.
A braced bracket 17 is fixed on the opposite face of the door 1 near the jamb 3,
extending therefrom horizontally and provided with a terminal eye 18. A plate 21 is fixed on the like face otthe door 2, and has a terminal eye 20, A connecting-rod 19 has down-turned ends movably mounted in said bearin -eyes'l8 and 20.
In- Fig. 1, the full lines show the positions of the parts when the doors are closed to gether. The arm 15 may heswung outwardly approximately 90 degrees to swing the doors open, placing the parts in the positions indicated by the dotted lines in the figure. 'Since the arm 15 is loosely pivoted at 14, and since there is some play between the pivotal connections of the connectingrod 12 with'both said arm and the eye 11- of the latch 10, the arm 15 can be swung downwardly slightly bythe pressure of the hand alone, causing the rod 12 to actuate the latch 10 to lift the free end of the latter and detach it from said catch 7 before the arm 15 is swung to swing the doors open. The arm 15 then being swung outwardly, swings open the door 2, which causes the connecting-rod 19, by means of its leverage upon the bracket 17 to swing open the other door 1. v
To close the doors, the. arm 15'is swung back tov its former position, the actuating elements then acting to swing the doors into their closed positions, the latch 10 riding over the inclined catch 7 and then becoming engaged with it by gravity.
Tt will be observed that there are rela-' tively few actuating parts, inexpensive and easily operated by the single swing-arm 15.
Having described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:
Tn combination, a pair of swinging doors, a bracket on one door, a connecting-rod pivotally connected between the outer end of said bracket and the other door, a catch on the opposite side of first-mentioned door, a latch pivotally mounted on the second-mentioned door and detachably engaged with I said catch, a depressible swinging arm, and
a connecting-rod pivotally connected between said swingingarm and said latch adapted to first disengage the latch from the catch when the swinging arm is depressed and second to swing said doors open when the swinging arm is rocked in another plane.
Signed at Waterloo, Towa, this 26th day of January,1917
, SETH Epl ldltitlltt i'.
