IRON ALLOY.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, J osnPH'M. FLANNER a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Pittsburgh, in the county of Alle-.
gheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Iron Alloys; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This inventionrelates to iron alloys, one object of the invention being'to alloy an- ,other metal with castiron or with semisteel, which will increase the strength and toughness of the iron; increase the fluidity of the same; enhance the quality of the iron to facilitate the machining of the same; to increase the resistance of the iron to wear; improve the molecular structure, and increase the quality of shrinkage in the molding process.
With these and other objects in view, the invention consists'in an iron alloy, as hereinafter described and pointed out in the claim.
My improved alloy comprises cast iron or semi-steel having uranium alloyed therewith in the proportion approximately from .05% to 1% uranium. The uranium may be supplied to the molten iron either in the form of uraniummetal or ferro-uranium in such quantity as will result in a uranium Specification of Letters Patent.

The uranium metal or ferro-uranium should be added to the stream of molten iron as it passes from the cupola into the ladle; or a small quantity of molten iron may be poured into a crucible, to which the uranium metal or ferrouranium may be added, and this may be followed by the pouring ofthe balance of the metal.
The uranium when alloyed with cast iron or semi-steel acts as a deroxidizing and denitrogenizing agent, increases the tensile strength of the iron and its resistance to wear and produces a finer grain casting. It
also gives to the iron a quality which will increase its fluidity when in amolten state, and also facilitate shrinkage when being molded, and imparts to'the iron a quality which will facilitate the machining thereof.

An iron or semi-steel alloy consisting of cast iron or semi-steel having from .05% to 1% of uranium alloyed therewith.
