IMPROVEMENT IN EARTH-CLOSETS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No.124,725, dated March 19,1872.
Specification describing a new and Improved Earth-Gloset,invented byAN'rHoNY W. DAvIs,
' of Wilmington, in the county of New Castle and State of Delaware.
Figure 1 represents a vertical longitudinal section of my improved earth-closet, the line G C, Fig.2,indicating the plane of section. Fig. 2 isa front elevation, partly in section, of the same, the line K K, Figzl, indicating the plane of section. Fig. 3 is a horizontal section on the line G1K, Fig. l.

The invention relates to earth-closets ofthe class in which a double grate is employed to discharge thc earth from the hopper; and- A, in the drawing, represents the case of the closet7 or its outer structure, provided with a seat, a, in the ordinary manner, and behind the sea-t with a hopper or receptacle for the earth. The bottom of the hopper b is formed by a fixed grate, B, under which there is a similar but movable grate, C. A spring, d, or weight moves the grate C forward under the openings of the grate B, as seen in Fig.'1, and thereby to hold the bottom of the hopper closed.
D is the hinged lid of the closet, provided at its sides with projecting arms or levers E E,.
which reach down to and connect with a movable frame, F, that is under the seat a. The receiving-vessel G of the closet is placed upon the frame or case F, as shown.
By opening the lid D the frame F is brought forward so as to place the vessel G under the seat, as in Fig. l, the hopper meanwhile being closed. When the lid D is closed the frame F with the vessel G is moved back under the hopper, the frame F striking an ear, e, of the grate G and pushing the latter back so as to bring its bars under under those of B, and thereby open the bottom of the hopper. The earth can then freely flow into the vessel Gr.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- The combination of the sliding grate O, arranged under fixed grate B, the hinged lid D, and sliding irameF, substantially as described.
