Be it known that I, HARRY J. Conn, a citi-V zen of the United States, residing at Bennington, in the county 0f Bennington and State of Vermont, have invented new `and useful Improvements in Mechanical Toys, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates essentially to a toy in which a weighted substance `carried in a cage, by its gravitation downward will move an empty cage upward.. The invention is designed to include a plurality of hoppers containing `the substances or objects, and slides actuated by the cages to normally close the mouth of each hopper.
An object of the invention is to provide means coacting in unison with the slides for controlling the movement of the objects from the hoppers into the cages.
The invention also provides means relative to the frame for preventing the object from rolling out of the cage until it reaches its lowest position.
The novel features of the invention are more `fully described in the following speci iication and claims and illustrated in the accompanying drawing in which Figure l represents a side elevation of a toy embodying this invention.

In this drawing the letter a designates a frame which consists of four posts connected to a top Z) and a base o. Each post has a longitudinal groove al located along the inner parts of the posts best seen in Fig. 3. There is also a pair of intermediate uprights c connected to cross pieces f to form openings g at the lower ends of the posts, the object of which will be hereinafter described. A pair of hoppers L are fixed to the upper portion of the posts. The hoppers are opposite to each other and adapted to receive or contain a series of balls i or other globular objects. These balls will move toward the mouth of the hopper by reason of the inclination of the bottom of the hopper.
The mouth of each hopper is normally closed by means of a vertically arranged slide j in engagement with the upper portions of the grooves in the posts. The upper Specication of Letters Patent. v

part of each slide carries a lug la Vprojecting outside of the post and provided with a rod mextending downwardly. The rod terminates `in an upwardly projecting hook 'n which when the slide covers the mouth of the hopper is out of engagement with the objects, as shown in Fig. 1.

I"The inclination of the bottom of the pocket permits the object to roll outward when the cage reaches the lower end of the posts. Both cages are connected together by means of a cord g looped about a pulley 1' suspended from the top of the device.
As indicated in the drawing, the lower portion of the lug ,7c forms a stop by contacting with the hopper to prevent excessive downward movement of the slide, rod and the hook. It will be seen that one of the cages when moving upward while empty is being pulled by the otherv downwardly moving weighted cage. The cage moving upward will strike onto the lower end of the slide thus lifting the slide until it opens the mouth of the hopper. When the cage is adjacent to the mouth of the hopper the foremost ball can roll into the pocket. The weighted cage is then down to the bottom adjacent to the opening g and the ball rolls out of the cage. The intermediate post e prevents spill of the ball from the cage while it is moving downward from the mouth of the hopper.
When the slide moves upward the hook n will slide up between two balls, thus allowing the iirst ball to roll into the cage and hold the others back until the hook moves down. When the cage moves downward, the slide by its own weight will follow it until the lug strikes onto the hopper to stop its downward movement. In this device one cage is always moving downward with an object in its pocket p to weight it while the other is being pulled upward by the downwardly moving cage.
